Is balance worthwhile?
Benthoven comments on Jul 26, 2018:
I think balance is inevitable. Every force in the universe seems to look for a balance. I think that's what we're seeing with climate change. We've trapped a lot of heat in the atmosphere, and so the earth is balancing that out... though the consequences for us are going to be miserable... so balance comes. As to light, light is present even in darkness. We can see it with the help of special night-vision glasses, or infrared goggles. In fact, darkness is most often defined as the 'absence of visible light.'
Sometimes the universe drags us kicking and screaming to where we need to be but that suggests a ...
Benthoven comments on Jul 26, 2018:
I would say it 'brought us to where we are,' but that's not necessarily where we need to be. But if we're happy where we are, then we can look back and see the events that brought us 'here' and think of it as something guiding us. But when it comes to evolution, there's a lot of adapting that takes place as well.

Benthoven comments on Jul 25, 2018:
I have noticed that logic rarely works with my Evangelical friends, so I gently mock them. They say, "Jesus loves you," I say, "Yah, but he's over two-thousand years old and still lives at home." One friend tried to get me with: "The fool has said in his heart 'there is no God'." I resounded by saying, "And the wise tweet it." They talk about God, and I ask them, "Which God?" They reply... "There's only ONE God..." So I say, then which phase? The god of the old testament is an alcoholic father. When he's sober he's loving and compassionate, but when hes on a bender, it's hell-fire and plague. The god of the New Testament is the new 'sober' god working out the twelve-steps and trying to make amends. But then there's Revelation god which is God after he just gives up and goes back to the booze."

I'd love to know people's thoughts on New Age/Spirituality.
Benthoven comments on Jul 25, 2018:
To be honest (and I was actually a member of the Centers for Spiritual Living) the New Age movement is really just warmed-over Christianity. Instead of Satan, they use "Ego." God is called "Spirit." Angels are... well angels, but also "energies." Sin is "negative thinking," and they're more into the prosperity doctrine than Joel Osteen. Like Christianity, which says that you suffer because of your sins, they say, "you suffer because your negative thinking attracts those horrible things. But in a way, because they don't have a "bible" to conform their thoughts to, they tend to be a lot more gullible, as we can see from all these fad diets, weird cleansing drinks, "healing" retreats... all of which make somebody very very rich.
I have stood for those values I do believed in, that's equality and justice for ALL, even for those ...
Benthoven comments on Jul 25, 2018:
I use "them" and "they" "us" and "we" as ways to avoid sounding like I'm personally attacking someone... especially in a comment. If I say "you" it looks like I'm talking about you when it's much broader than that. Language is a living thing, and it's complicated. And without proper context, way too many things become misconstrued or taken completely wrong. We're at a phase in our evolution where we really need to stop and think about the things we're saying. I'm not talking about "political correctness," I'm talking about the awareness of how language affects us and shapes our cultures. Because it's ubiquitous, we don't notice it, but it's clearly a big deal... just read the comments section of any article... such as this one.
Beer is Best for this !
Benthoven comments on Jul 25, 2018:
Reminds me of an old joke I used to know: A man, out walking along the beach discovered a beautiful bottle. While admiring it he inadvertently rubbed it, releasing a genie. Grateful, the genie promised one wish. The man, thoughtful, remarked, “You know, I’ve always wanted to go to Hawaii, but I’m too afraid to fly. I wish for a bridge from here to Hawaii.” “Are you kidding?” the genie howled. “Do you know what’s involved with a project that big? I have to build pylons that go hundreds... thousands of feet into the water. The bridge has to cover over two thousand miles of miles of ocean… There are tides, weather, currents, waves and swell. It will take billions of dollars and decades to finish. No way. Wish for something else.” Saddened, the man reconsidered. “Well,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to really connect with a woman—so I wish to genuinely understand them.” The genie paused for a moment and sighed deeply. “Do you want two or four lanes on that highway?”

Benthoven comments on Jul 24, 2018:

Cold-hearted people once cared too much? Agree or disagree?
Benthoven comments on Jul 24, 2018:
I disagree. Perhaps they're giving that "caring" to people who don't deserve it or who aren't going to take care of it. If they love someone, and that someone treats them like garbage, they can still love the someone but get away from them. If they stay, then that's what burns them out. There are people in life who are "vampires..." they suck the very life out us. If we stick around with those people, we are drained dry. There are others who build us up and call out what's good in us, and encourage us to be better. Those people charge our batteries. To the decree we can, we also need to make good decisions about the people we get close to.

Benthoven comments on Jul 24, 2018:
People always talk about "energy" as if it's a single, consolidated entity. Only it's not. According to physics, energy is a property that must be transferred to an object to work on... or heat... and there are many type of energy: Magnetic, thermal, nuclear, mechanical... So this whole idea that there's some "substance" called "energy" has always confused me. I get energy from eating food... yet I'm going to die. The sun produces massive amounts of solar energy in the form of light and heat... yet the sun will die... in fact, were it not for dying stars, we wouldn't be here. So "energy," in new-age parlance is just another term for god, gussied up to sound sciency.

Benthoven comments on Jul 24, 2018:
I've noticed that if somebody says "people are so angry..." they're probably the angry ones eliciting that emotion from others. When someone says that people can't be trusted, I suspect that it's the person saying that which can't be trusted. The problem is, we're in our own blindside, so we don't see. But if we're constantly having to tell people that "we're a good person," it's probably because we 'think' we're good, but we're occurring very differently in the world around us.

This whole "getting likes" thing confuses me. When did we get so damn needy? As to posting pictures of children, I know people who do it, but I've worked in the computer industry for most of my life, and I tell all of my friends, "for your kids' sakes, don't do it." I've manage Web content for companies like Microsoft, Starbucks, Orion, as well as smaller companies and startups. Any time one of my clients wants to post a picture of their kids I strongly discourage it. Here's a very brief article on why: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/privacy-and-internet-safety/is-it-safe-to-post-pictures-of-my-kid-online I have dated men with children, but my rule is that I don't meet the children until we know we're "a thing." Kids bond easily, and I don't want to create more havoc in their lives. I love kids, which is why I do it this way. Other than that, I don't understand why we're so up in everybody's business about what they choose to share on "their" space... I say be you. If it bother's me, I'll be me someplace else... We've gotten way to up in each other's business lately.
