@maturin1919 I'm generalizing too much. But, many wanted the school to deal with all problems. Had a girl with a 27 year old boyfriend at 16. Now, as a mandatory reporter and new rules, i would report it to the state. Then, it went to my immediate boss who spoke to the mother, who approved. And the boss dropped it. That case was another reason I wanted to go elsewhere: the guidance counselor put his arm around my shoulder and lectured me like a life rookie, "some girls are sexual active at this age." No shit, Sherlock, I was in the military before my college. I didn't say that, but wanted too. I was a rookie teacher.

John_Tyrrell comments on Jan 24, 2019:
Regrettably there are laws in the USA which require unpaid government workers to work. I suppose those laws could be challenged under anti-slavery laws.
Beowulfsfriend replies on Jan 24, 2019:
Laws do that. And laws that Congress can't amend their salary until after an election, meaning they can't negate their pay either. And laws forbidding military personnel from suing the government, which now extends (thanks Supreme Court) to military contractors working for the gov. And weird definitions of laws for the Coast Guard, in a special conundrum because only in war are they paid by the military, but they are classified as military for all other laws. So, no pay and brig for no work.

@thinktwice i think people of all races can are "brainwashed" or influenced to believe a certain way. I don't think race, aside from when one group uses it as a caste system, plays into anyone being able to pull themselves out of poverty. Due to some caste system stereotypes in place it may be more difficult for nonwhites in reality. I believe, like the author, luck can and does play into most people escaping the chain of poverty. Sometimes merit can be found, however, that is often discovered from outside sources.

@thinktwice your stereotype of "nonwhites" doesn't stand up as most are Christian, anti abortion, and anti gay (check statistics). Many, however are willing to vote for other reasons. Beowulfsfriend replies on Jan 21, 2019:
Yep. And for many of us in our life time, bananas have changed once already. Scientists are preparing the next type of banana as we wait. Let us see what genetic modifications are created. They have modified tobacco so cigarette tobacco can grow farther North. After many years of tobacco missing from the local Amish farms here in Pennsylvania due to reduced pipe and cigar prices, tobacco is back and everywhere. A bit of irony as those that shun technology are profiting from it.

He said if it had been smoking he could accept that as his responsibility, but had it been welding, then he wanted to vent his anger at his work.

@Veteran229 again you make an incorrect assumption. Martin was never charged with a crime nor found guilty of being an aggressor. The Florida law to stand your ground was interpreted in such a manner to clear his shooter. The way the law is written I could shoot you as I simply believe you are a danger to me and most likely carry a weapon. As the law is written, i have a valid excuse and thus a usable defense. Try again. And your concept of modern history is a bit confused as there is more to point to the rise if BLM from Ferganson. Do you want a list of times Trump proved his racism? Start with the government fining he and his father for racist rental practices in the 60's and start counting. Also, I asked for proof of Obama supporting Farrakhan.
