I learned a lot reading this Wiki article about Margaret Sanger. I didn't know (almost?
KKGator comments on Nov 13, 2018:
Except when it came to her racism. She became a proponent of the Eugenics movement. Look that up on wikipedia.
Beowulfsfriend replies on Nov 13, 2018:
@AlPastor she was complicated. And some of her views are being exposed by evangelicals to negate her good doings. Hard to judge her as a person. Look at Jefferson. Few have tried to tear down his work toward a solid democratic republic, but he was a racist and slave owner (willing to keep his own children enslaved). I won't argue her ethics; especially with someone who wants to tear down planned parenthood, etc. Absolutely no one should drive a Volkswagen and that company should be destroyed. Why? Because Hitler commissioned Porsche to build a cheaper and more affordable car. No one should doubt some of her dubious motives and honoring her would be wrong, but so would destroying the good things she helped others to create and build. That is why we need a careful balance.

@WilliamFleming and you just flunked college writing 101 persuasive essay by not arguing the content and bringing in something alien (and we all know for political reasons). What does HRC have to do with what Palovitz had to say? Your use of "over generalizing" isn't aimed at the article, but the person presenting it. One could just as easily claim you are over generalizing by using Clinton in a perceived prerogative usage. Your intent was clear: hippiechick's intent was clear. I called you out on your hypocrisy. And you want to act like you are attacking the article, which you are not, if you have even read it.

6 Only the last line matters. The two previous lines are meaningless as they are not connected to the actual equation. You solve the multiplication first, then it becomes 3+3.
Beowulfsfriend replies on Nov 12, 2018:
@KenChang there is always a right answer, but depending on a number of factors it could vary, ie, quantum physics. Are you a mathematician? I enjoy math and science, albeit my main degree for teaching is in English. I can argue language is binary. Anyway, why I ask: my son has his PHD in mathematics in the study of automorphic intergers. Few people, and I fully admit I have little understanding, know much about them. Even had math teachers go home and look the field up.

There are no operation signs after the first 2 lines, they are not part of the actual equation. The actual equation is "3+3x0+3=?", order of operations says do the multiplication first, so 3x0 becomes 0, which reduces the equation to 3+0+3=?, which is 6.

The H and J cartoons made in the later 60's aren't the same we saw earlier in the 50's and the early 60's. Those were older and definitely biased. Look up Disney's Song of the South.

@Trajan61 i will continue to disagree. I don't think you have the knowledge base needed for such an argument as you are not willing to observe history from a long term perspective and have no facts to back up your believes on what Clinton and Obama's judges have done - name the cases they voted in to change case laws that would have gone against the 2nd amendment as written and currently interpreted. Oh, and here is some free factual information that I am pretty sure you won't believe, but look it up and not with the NRA (A lobby for gun manufacturers using people like you for their gains), Pelosi when Speaker last time introduced zero bills to curtail the 2nd amendment. Yes, it was political, but so is everything in D.C. I study history and science, not stupidity and fanatical lies put out by money hungry parasites. And before you judge me, take note, I owned my first gun at 13; I served in the military; I am not, nor will I ever be a mindless automatron to any organization. Study some history, specifically fascist regimes. First thing to go is the right of speech, then controls on limits served (22nd amendment), some other rights and then, big time my friend - no guns. You've more to fear under Trump. The NRA has a government back door into their system and for enough cash (increased military and police sales) will sell out the common member in a heartbeat.

Just have a "suspicion" and as it is property it has no rights so the owner must prove that there is nothing to the police claims, a costly and lengthy legal battle. Example (on 60 minutes) 2 legal Mexican farm workers heading back home with a year's savings (25k) were stopped in Louisiana and the money confiscated because, well, two poor immigrants could only have that much cash because of drugs. They were lucky; their employer flew down and went to court for them. And things like that have only gotten worse. Yes, check online. You will see.

You are accepting an old false narrative that the mentally ill do most shootings. The clinically known mentally ill are more likely to hurt themselves than others, so denying them gun access which is already happening hasn't stopped gun violence. It is easy to say that any one who would perpetrate such violence is mentally ill, but more likely it is other beliefs and environmental factors that push those people to do what they do.

Beowulfsfriend replies on Oct 27, 2018:
The "Mooch" recently made an inane remark, claiming Trump knows he is lying so it is different since Trump intends to do so. Pretty incredulous, I know, because isn't knowing something is a lie what defines a real lack of morality? The new norm? It is okay to lie, as long as you intend to do so. Let us put that on the legal statutes.

Teaching religion is a slippery slope, even by the best prepared to do so. When I taught, a colleague taught a comparative religions class one year. I had difficulty with the curriculum and told him so. It did not, to any great extent, examine atheism; of course, it also spent more time with the Abrahanic religions and more briefly on the other major world religions (mostly Asian); it failed to address non trinitarianism; and, avoided all mention of Nativism.

First, if you want "immigration control" that will work, whatever that means, let us say: keep out bad people (such as Eastern European sex traders - who can buy their way into the country as it only takes a 250k business investment to get jumped ahead in the line and get a green card) then changes that would discourage people coming in need to be instituted. Remember the 911 terrorists were mostly Saudis, our friends, there were no Iraqis or even Iranians. They all came in on either hb1 visas or student visas. Both are big money as students pay tuition and hb1 workers earn less pay. Simply fine the big companies that hire illegal workers and enact laws that require schools and businesses to report people who quit. Other wsys: first, scatch the horrible and expensive idea if a wall that attacks and villifies a single group and will do little to stem illegal immigration. On the border, drones and sensors would work cheaper and benefit animal migration and an impact on Native tribes as opposed to an expensive boondoggle that will do little to stem illegal immigration. Much more could be done in arresting and fining companies that hire undocumented immigrants.

What you and kissedbythesun say both have tremendous merit. I believe there are different types of love. All originate in the chemical processes in the brain, yet not all survive, or some morph or warp. Filial love is the most stable. There are most likely many environmental and genetic reasons for that. I don't think romantic love can ever last; unless it, as i said, morphs into some sort of love of companionship and sharing and fidelity.

@Amisja there is only one old English copy of the poem tale. Actually there are few original old English writings in existence. Old English is closer to its Germanic roots. Middle English is much closer and I can read it with a cheat sheet of about 40 words (most of which now have opposite meanings). There are a number of modern English translations of Beowulf (modern English dates from around 1450 or so). I have read many; 13 for just one class in grad school. Of course the story is older, and it was first written down by monks and thus includes Pagan parts and infused with Christian religion. A number of the characters are real historical figures like King Hrothgar. Beowulf is an invented and possibly part composit figure from the Geat people. And the translations vary: some implying sexual misconduct by Hrothgar, thus the curse of the monster Grendel, and possibly his offspring to the more sedate translations found in American high school English texts.

@brentan Not really, at least statistically. Sure, there are exceptions to everything. But falsely accused men and women is a small fraction of the truth. I taught 20 years, and yes, I was always cognizant of my surroundings when talking privately with any student, female or male, and always kept the door open, even with a single parent. I never saw any false reports of sexual misconduct (other types of minor falsehoods a couple times). Now, ask me how real misconduct in sexual abuse was handled. First time, male on males, and quickly the school acted after discovering a parent had known and helped hide it if the two male teachers underwent religious counseling with that parent. The other time male to female. It was reported to the Students Assistance Program and as a member, we immediately knew to report it as mandatory reporters. I drew the "lucky" straw and had to tell the boss. I got yelled at. Stayed calm and told him to shut up and do what the law requires. Then he calmed down, until I refused to name the annonomous source which was the law. I did get the source to come forward after the boss promised to be polite. The man was out the next day, the police contacted, and the source told me the boss was very polite to her. To which I replied, yeah, I took all his initial pissiness. All three perpitrators spent time in prison.
