It's called compartmentalization. Many people think scientifically about some things, but superstitiously about other things. Scientists who go to church do not exercise the scientific method on Sunday mornings. If they did, they would not be going to church at all. They would disprove the superstitious claims of the church, and dismiss religion as a scam (to control people and get their donations).

Most people on here are atheists and that's cool and all but who on here is truly agnostic.

I did years of research, and read widely, including all the literature that Christians thought would take me back to my religious roots. I never found a single argument that convinced me that the Bible is trustworty, nor that gods exist, nor that any church is true. Because of what I deem to be a complete lack of evidence for theism, I am an atheist. Most recently, a JW tried to convince me that their religion was true. I read all the literature he gave me, and I pointed out the logical fallacies in it. I demanded good evidence, and he was not able to provide any. My conclusion is that religion is a scam (they ALWAYS ask for money) based on mythology. I acknowledge the possibility (not probability) that I have missed some valid evidence, but until I see it, I remain an atheist. This acknowledgment does not make me agnostic. According to my present state of knowledge, all the evidence points toward atheism.

I lived in Argentina for 2 years and in Italy for more than 1 year. I was raised in a right-wing family, but I'm not sure it was the living abroad that brought me around to the liberal side. I think other factors matured me more, especially learning to think for myself, becoming evidence-based rather than faith-based. Experiencing different cultures does help me respect foreigners more, and it does help me understand that the USA is not as superior as it thinks it is.

I'd say it has to do with how much research a person does. An agnostic has not done enough research to become an atheist. An atheist has done too much research to be an agnostic. I, for example, have spent years looking for evidence on both sides of the issue -- the religious side and the anti-religious side. I have found no convincing evidence supporting religion, and much evidence in favor of atheism. Therefore, I am an atheist. I do admit the possibility (not a probability) that I have missed some research that could turn me back toward religion. But until such evidence comes to my attention, I remain an atheist. Whenever a missionary approaches me, I ask for evidence for what they are preaching. So far, nobody has been able to show me enough evidence to turn me away from atheism. In fact, this tactic causes missionaries to tire of me and abandon me, which is most often a good riddance. :)

In that sense, the interaction here seems to me a bit superficial. But, then, I suppose everyone has good reasons for becoming agnostic or atheist, so maybe they don't need further evidence. There may be one or more groups here that do enjoy the nitty-gritty. I have not yet explored all the groups.
