I have no problem reading the Bible or other religious books, as long as I view them as mythology rather than reality. The toxic thing about religion is when they present mythology as if it were reality, and then they build a scam on it, warning gullible people that if they don't pay tithing or other offerings, they will suffer forever in hell. They also attempt to control everything you do and say, cause you to feel guilty about everything, and use you as a salesman to bring others into the scam. I like the UU church (Unitarian Universalist) because they offer all the good things about churches -- fellowship, group singing, opportunities to help others, etc. -- but they allow freedom of thought, not insisting that you believe anything. They do nothing to discourage agnostics or atheists. In fact, they welcome us with open arms. They do not control your life, make you feel guilty, or insist that you impoverish yourself to support the church. It's more like a club than a church, and it's a great way to transition from religious myth to reality.

Well, I guess that's one way.

I was raised to be a Mormon. As an adult I began to study the prophecies of the founding prophet, so I could convince others that he was a true prophet. To my surprise, I proved just the opposite. He was a false prophet. Then I applied the same test to the biblical prophets, and discovered that they had no divine gift for predicting the future, either. I did a lot more study, finding contradictions in the Bible, false prophecies and phony fulfillments. I read books on apologetics recommended by my christian friends. All the "evidence" they offered turned out to be illogical and false. It was when I reached that conclusion that I abandoned religion completely and became an atheist.

I've mentioned my in-depth research debunking religion, and nobody seems interested in seeing my reports, or getting into the details. In that sense, the interaction here seems to me a bit superficial. But, then, I suppose everyone has good reasons for becoming agnostic or atheist, so maybe they don't need further evidence. There may be one or more groups here that do enjoy the nitty-gritty. I have not yet explored all the groups.

My way out of religion was intellectual. Matthew 7:15-20 warns us against false prophets and tells us that by their fruits you will know them. Similarly, Deuteronomy 18:20-22 tells us that if a prophet makes a prediction in the name of the Lord, and the prediction proves to be false, he is a false prophet, and should be ignored. I studied the prophets, and especially the main ones: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel & Daniel. In each of them, I found predictions made in the name of of the Lord that never came true, and the time for fulfillment is past. My conclusion is that the biblical prophets had no divine gift for predicting the future. If you would like further detail, I would be happy to send you my reports. I, too, went through a suicidal phase after my wife took the kids and disappeared as a result of my leaving the Moron (oops, Mormon) church. I survived, and I'm glad I did. As bad as things may look now, keep your chin up and move on. As Little Orphan Annie sings, "The sun will come out tomorrow." There will be hope and happiness ahead. Make new friends. When I became an adult, did my research, and discovered that religion was not reality, but mythology, I was honest with everyone about it. The church excommunicated me. My wife took the children and disappeared. Later, I got the divorce papers. My parents were kind and accepting. But the most important thing was what I thought of myself. I was happy to keep my integrity intact and be honest with everyone. Their reaction is their own business.
