I believe it goes beyond that, maybe does not even include that. On some level, these are people who have experienced the culture leaving them behind. The Republicans, with whom they used to identify, who they voted for for years, in effect, screwed them in their search for still more profit, and sent their jobs overseas, or automated them; they destroyed the unions that had brought a middle class to America, and wages, for those with jobs went stagnant, as the CEO's income skyrocketed. So, their sense of agency within their own lives was beaten down. this could easily lead to depression, but I would not call that "emotionally disturbed" in this situation, rather "hurt." We all have at least some healthy narcissism within us, a sense that "I matter," and the like, but when even this takes ongoing hits, it can really hurt. And, hurt is a normal precursor to anger. Then along comes fucking Trump, with a message they are dying to hear...something like Reagan's damned message that "You can have it all?" which moved the greed needle to overdrive, and helped energize the process that has brought the country to this level of massive inequality!

@Kenoaks He might crave love, but is constitutionally incapable of accepting it. He likes adulation, the closest thing to love he can handle. Being able to accept love from a person requires one to be able to trust, and even to reciprocate, at least to some extent, but he can not trust, nor certainly, reciprocate.
