I believe that Pema Chodron is totally correct. In my view, the universe and we are all here by way of totally random processes, given the way the universe originated and the ways in which it is organized, laws of physics, and all that. And there is no protection from the random things that can befall any being, or even inanimate object. Apparently, the vast majority of people are not able to to be comfortable with "...the ambiguity and uncertainty" she speaks of. As I understand it, acceptance of what is is a major theme of Buddhism. In do not believe that it is meant as a form of passivity, but it is something like "Don't cry over spilled milk." Clean "it" up, rather than moan, complain and bitch; and move on.

I wonder if there are any Christian neuroscientists?
BirdMan1 comments on Sep 20, 2019:
Yes, and no. We are more than just the wiring in our heads, or bodies; are not some form of automatons. I am currently reading "Musicophilia," by Oliver Sacks, who was a neurologist. Here and much elsewhere, I have read that what people refer to as religious experiences, out of body experiences, are not especially unusual alternate states of experience. But, we each bring our own personal history, and perspective to any experience, and interpret such in a way that fits our view of ourselves. We may experience AWE at something, and recognize it as AWE, be happy to have had that experience, while the person next to us might attribute that same experience as a touch from his/her god. The latter person is fooling her/himself, but cannot recognize it.

BirdMan1 comments on Sep 17, 2019:
How about "That's your spin, based on your biased point of view., or "On your assumptions.?" Not that you would get up in the church and say it out loud. I once wrote a letter to Minister whose sign outside his church said, essentially, "God does not care how you manage to spread His message!" I wrote to him that this would have fit, very nicely, into the perspective of the World Trade attackers, and that he needs to apologize to his congregation, and the community. I closed by saying that I would not put my name on the letter, because if he really believes what he wrote, I would not feel safe letting him know who I was. If...you decide to "come out," you might write to tell him that this imbecility helped you to get to that point.

A church some few miles from my home has planted 3 little crosses on the grass at an intersection, one of which says "Jesus," another of which says "Obey," and I do not recall the third. In todays context, especially, the "obey" bothers me most,as these idiots probably think that obeying Trump is tantamount to obeying their Jesus.

BirdMan1 comments on Sep 15, 2019:
The culture I come from is Jewish, but I am 3rd generation atheist on one side, maybe both. What are called the High Holy days, and, in spring Passover, are an annoyance to me . Well, no, just Passover is, with its food restrictions. As a teenager, a friend and I wanted to see what it was all about, and tried to attend "Services." We were simply turned away at the door, having no tickets, and the apparent disregard for us, rather than some interest in why we might have come without tickets, did nothing to endear either of us to the religion. I do nothing different at the autumn holy days, and have attended a Seder at Passover, at a cousin's annually. To me, this is just a time to visit with family. My wife has done second night Seder at our house, but, now, with no family close by, after our recent move, we'll see.

Is there phenomenology without a self?
BirdMan1 comments on Sep 9, 2019:
I doubt it, very much. What we know as "experience" is filtered through our unique consciousnesses, and finds a place within same based on our unique and already formed perspective of "How things are," "How I am." And, "self" is the sum of our experiences, and how we each have organized them into our gestalt of being.

For a full exploration of their odious machinations, read "Democracy in Chains-The Deep History of the Radical Right’s Stealth Plan for America," by Nancy MacLean. I see religion as a "Culturally supported delusion," a phrase of my own devising. The concept of religion, in my perspective, came before the concept of using it to control people, as a tool of manipulation and control. But, as pointed out, clearly visible today, people seek patterns, people are also afraid of the randomness they sense running the world, and invented gods as ways to explain, attempts to find explanations, causes, for how the world works. That gives them the fantasy that they can have some control, agency, over the workings of the world. As in If you pray 23 rosaries on an odd dated Tuesday, when it is sunny before 10:00 A.M., and throw 23 bits of salt over your shoulder, god will listen to your prayers." Right!!
