That said one of my classes was repeatedly doing horrible things to each other in the breaks so we had a "class meeting" that began just before each break to discuss the issue (and given we could back then went on into the break for most of the break) and consisted of me talking at them about the behaviours expected of them and how tolerance and respect for each other was important, I can really drone on. After three "meetings" (each one after they had again been nasty to one another at a break) one raised his hand and said, "These meetings are going to continue until we stop being idiots aren't they?" When I grinned they all groaned and the stupid behaviour stopped. Technically a detention but framed differently and really boring for them. Unfortunately I see most meetings as a detention that rarely have anything interesting in them.

Budgie comments on Jan 11, 2020:
If you want to really investigate this I would interview people on the ASD spectrum. While they have feelings they struggle to "read" others feelings or to equate how an action might impact others. If they are injured by another some can become hellbent on revenge or the other person paying for it. So teaching them social skills is paramount in Special Education and we do it with Social Stories ie When I walk into a room I say hello/hi/good morning to my teacher. My teacher may be busy and I have to wait for him/her to reply. My teacher may say good morning and ask me a question. I have to answer the question. We will have lots of conversations around why we do this. Many of them struggle with the "conventions of society" I had one student who would compliment teachers on how they looked (he thought he was being polite) some teachers found it creepy, so big conversation around relationships and how each person has the right to tell you what you can and can not say to them. Very confused student who could not understand that they did not see he was just being polite. Again this is their feelings based on his actions. For me personally I would say if what I am doing is not physically harming someone/ the environment, taking away needs from someone/the environment or interfering overly with their wants (a tough one to judge) then it is okay. If someone is breaking these by harming others or taking needs away then it is okay to break these ideals to deal with them. I am not a pacifist.

Budgie comments on Jan 11, 2020:
i have always believed people should have the right to choose. My favourite author Sir Pterry (Terry Pratchett) did a documentary about it Choosing to Die he wanted to go out with a glass of wine and his family around him. I heard of a farmer who was diagnosed with alzheimer's disease, the second time he was found wandering around the farm and was brought home by neighbours he knew he did not want to wait until he was completely gone. There were no options other than to check himself into an old people's home and wait for the end. He waited for a day when everyone was out, rang the police to tell them what he was about to do and where he could be found, went into the shed and shot himself. He did not want his famiy to find him and in his note apologized to the police who he knew would be affected by being the ones to first come across his body. It would have been far better for everyone concerned if he had been able to do it peacefully and with them knowing and ready. It is high time we gave people the right to make these choices. Technically there is already assisted deaths, when my mother was dying the nurses kept coming in and turning up the morphine, not enough to kill her but enough to compromise her breathing and slow down her already damaged heart. At least she was not in pain. She may have lasted a few more days without the morphine. My uncle, dying of cancer, was also put on a morphine drip and my aunt said that the nurses kept on coming in and fiddling with the machine (in all probability turning up the dosage) again not to kill him but to dull the pain the side effect was also that it hastened his death.
A belated post to express my pleasure in being a part of this group.
Budgie comments on Jan 11, 2020:
Welcome, I can not begin to imagine what it is like to like in an area where the belief in a deity is something that is expected. I have heard many interesting stories from friends who taught in American schools, one where the reading of the bible happened every morning in the classroom with the previous teacher and when my friend did not do it the parents were in an uproar about it not being done. Here it would almost get you sacked if you did do it. The driver on our bus one day (taking my class on an excursion) turned the radio to a god channel and one of the kids piped up with "Can we turn to a channel that plays good music I don't want to hear god stuff." I was not listening to the channel to be honest as I talking to some of the children. Was so proud of him for being polite but pointed at the same time.

If asked what you do for a living state you are a Dr if asked what kind then say Ob/gyn. If he specifically asks if you perform abortions I would answer based on the laws where you are. If it is illegal simply say abortions here are illegal. This would only become an issue if you became more than hiking buddies. Wait until you know more about him and his opinions. As a vegatarian I would have a tough time dating someone who kills animals for a living, but a complete deal breaker for me is smoking so things can vary.
I'm sure many people on here have religious friends and family members that get on your nerves.
Budgie comments on Jan 5, 2020:
One of my best friends was catholic (died from cancer) he knew I was atheist and it did not bother him we had a live and let live policy. We focused on all of the other similarities we had. Please note he was not a go to church every Sunday catholic. When his father died and I went to the funeral sitting at the back as I did not know his father very well he told me I could move further forward that I would not go up in flames. I joked back that I was more worried about the church going up in flames. At the end of the service he came up to me and as we hugged he told me that I had survived, he was glad there were no lightning bolts to distract from his father's service. Once when I said "oh my god" near him he pointed out that I could not say that if I did not believe in a god. I forget how the rest of the conversation went but it ended up with him becoming my own personal god to the point that was how I stored his phone number in my phone. If I used the word god around him he replied with a "Yes my child?" Depending on the people maybe using humour could help. I know with a friend (who does get on my nerves) I walk away she does not have a well developed sense of humour and gets offended easily. There are some people I work with that we just do not mention it as we are pretty much diametrically opposed. But as I understand it in America the people tend to be more militant about believing. Good luck with it.

When I was a child and before I had heard of cults that peddled door to door, there was a knock at our door. I answered and the person said they were jehovah's witnesses and could they talk to my dad. I call out to Dad who comes to the door, as he is shuttng it behind him he hears me say to mum "Who is Joe and what has he done wrong that he needs a witness." He looked them in the eyes and tried not to laugh at them. The peddlers in our town got a lot of flack, my friend's mum chased them off the property with a wet mop, and another set of parents were interrupted when their children were out and they were enjoying themselves so the Dad (all 6ft of him) grabbed the closest robe and opened the door, it was his wife's robe and she was 5ft it was a bit short and it was obvious what he had been about to do. He looked them in the face and asked if they were lost. They went red and left. I think people spent a lot of time working out how to outdo each other in getting rid of them.

Budgie comments on Dec 20, 2019:
As a child went to church every Sunday complete with white gloves (I loved those gloves) and a special bag with some money in it to put on the church plate when it was past around. Read passages from the bible in church and went to kiddies Sunday school. All I remember from it is that I answered that the festival being celebrated the the Overpass (passover) The family was not hard core religious as I see it, grace was said at meal times but that was about it. Somewhere in my teenage years I thought about all of the praying I had done for the starving in Africa and there was still starving in Africa, the deaths of some wonderful people one a fantastic mother her daughter only 5 years old. The catholic priest who refused to hold a service for a scout leader who committed suicide, (then my mum went at him saying he had failed our friend who did not feel he could go to his spiritual leader for help, we got a service for him) just lots of things that I started to question. I decided bad things just happen (my grandfather died on my birthday before seeing my younger brother who had been born that year) that praying did not change things but doing things did. Gave up on xtian religion (even the gloves too hot in the tropics to wear them) a few battles with my family but more over my obnoxious teenage behaviour and the fact my father disliked my music. Explored other religions and belief systems but got into trouble when I questioned things ie that in older religions it was people trying to explain the world around them ie gods of thunder, the sun etc. I got told, when I raised the issue that all of the older religions had a god/dess of each type of natural element, that I did not know what I was talking about and that the god of thunder (or something ) was the major god of one group but only a minor god of another. Decided that is was all hokum and stopped believing in any of it. Got interested in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and read about Douglas Adams and some of what he believed. Watched a lot of Monty Python and The Goodies, sad that my ideology was formulated by TV shows but I grew up in a tiny remote community there was not much of a library and not a lot of radical information out there. My best friend was not christened which helped me to start looking at life differently.
Been watching Northern Exposure again and this song came on I thought I would share.

What are your thoughts on home schooling?
Budgie comments on Dec 18, 2019:
This is not a simple yes/no situation. The reasons for homeschooling vary, I had a friend who was homeschooled due to medical issues. She could not attend as she had to have many surgeries and would at times have open wounds on her legs. She was in primary school and so her parents taught her but she still had contact with her peers as long as none of them had any kind of infection. Another was traveling with her parents they were both teachers, one in English/Science the other Maths/Languages. There are those that do it to prevent interactions with people and hence ideas they do not like. If those ideas are never presented nor talked about it means a massive deficient in the students education. If there is no social interaction then it reduces their ability to engage with a wide variety of people. I think it would be better if schools opened up a bit more and allowed a more flexible learning environment. However, that requires governments to spend money on education and not many of them are willing to do that. Sending you child to a cult based school is just the same as home schooling because of your beliefs they are not getting a wide cross section just those that support the cult's view. I think the reason for it, the quality of the curriculum the students are learning, the skills of the people who are guiding them all come into play.

Mother Teresa was a sadist, she allowed people to suffer saying it was their way to god. There was a "good catholic" nurse who decided to spend a year serving in one of her "homes" in India. She left after three months broken and depressed. They reused hypodermic needles, there was never enough food or blankets for the women, when she complained she was shut down. She described conditions that were unacceptable but the nuns said it was fine. Soon after she left the church (don't know if she stopped believing) Never has any of the money donated to teresa been scrutinized to see where it goes (I would suggest the church) as this woman said enough money was donated but never seemed to get spent on the women. It was eye opening to read, that and the magdelene laundries tell you everything about the mindset of cultists.

Obviously any psychological issues that are driving someone to drink need to be dealt with my trained professionals or they will simply head towards another drug. I used to do Ballroom and Latin American dance as a teenager, this type of song was used for the Jive often so this while I had never heard it before brought back so many memories.

I remember singing this with my mum when I was young I did not have the verse about the captain's daughter but we had one about keelhauling him and mum explained what that was to me. I love singing it loudly.
Do you think that " I have found god" should mean the same as "A get out of Gaol/Jail free" card.
Budgie comments on Dec 11, 2019:
If they have truly found "god" then they will be willing to do their time as they would know the benefits of penitence, showing remorse and making amends for the ills they have done. If they feel they should not be jailed then they do not believe and should be jailed. Quite simple really jail if that is what the law says is the punishment for their crime.
By this time tomorrow I will be listening to these guys live.

I would be out there until my nose froze then it would be inside to warm up again. I ran around in the snow in bare feet. (I hate wearing shoes and was sick of having to change from my boots to snowboots) only for a short while.
Madness - Mr. Apples [youtu.be]
Budgie comments on Dec 2, 2019:
Love Madness got to see them a few years ago in WA. The fun part being they were performing at an old insane asylum in Fremantle which has been turned into an Arts Centre and it was a full moon. So awesome.

Budgie comments on Dec 2, 2019:
For number 2 what do you do when someone says that female genital mutilation is part of their religion? The sacrificing of animals etc. It needs very careful wording to make sure that it can not be twisted as in a new law passed in America where a teacher can not mark a students work incorrect if it is their religious belief. ie evolution vs creationism. But have at it and good luck.

What do you think about 'intuition?
Budgie comments on Dec 1, 2019:
One of my friends jokes about me being a skeptical psychic (she believes in that stuff) there are times when I think or dream of something and then it happens or something close enough that it could possibly be what I dreamt/thought. An example neighbour tells me she is pregnant for no reason I think of my cousin who lost a baby at 7months gestation. I don't say anything to the neighbour but she loses her baby (not at 7 months) so was this some sort of psychic event or did my brain rapidly work out that her husband already had a child that was about 10 years old, she and her husband had been together for about 5 years at least (the length of time I had lived next to them) never had she talked about children or having children, (were they trying and it was too painful to talk about) she was not a young woman in terms of child bearing years I would suggest closer to 40 than 30. Did my brain do all of the maths and go there is a high chance she could lose the baby think of your cousin in her 20's perfectly healthy who lost her baby for no known reason. Intuition is simply the brain processing without us realising it. I went to visit family and saw my uncle and thought he is sick. While there were no outward signs there was something off about him something must of been different enough that my brain picked up on it, maybe a smell or the way he was walking/acting. He, in fact, already had the cancer that would kill him but no one, not even he, knew it yet. We also tend to remember the events that happen rather than the ones that don't. I was staying with the above friend and had a dream that her husband was in a car crash. Not an unreasonable dream as he spent most of the day on the road driving from job to job and we were in a big city. When I got up in the morning he had not left for work, do I tell him about my dream, knowing that he and my friend put stock in that stuff, or not? I decided not to. I simply said "take care out there" as he left. He came home and talked of the near miss he had. But he may have had near misses every other day without talking about them or we did not store them in memory as he was home safe and it was a city near misses happen often. Do I remember it because of the link to the dream I had.

I like the part in Good Omens when Adam is getting his dog/hellhound and it transforms to his ideas of what a dog should be.

A show in Australia called The Money or the Gun had different Artists come on each week to perform this song in their style, some great covers, some silly depends on what people like or dislike in music. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB51C97ADB8ED0B89
