We have the exact same gift & stocking tradition! I do enjoy it, as do the kids. The little wait before opening gifts is good for them. Many years ago we began a tradition of having each person open one gift at a time so the others can see what they got & the giver can be properly thanked. It makes it all last longer & avoids the frenzy of paper being ripped off & often the gift barely looked at before being set aside to grab another & another.

Among many cultures before the introduction of "Western ways", cutting off of a finger or part of a finger was a funerary rite performed at the death of a loved one or family member. It is notably still practiced among the Dani tribe of Papua New Guinea.

@MojoDave Actually that would be better since they wouldn't have to keep cutting fingers off of the same people. If you read "Under the Mountain Wall" by that famous anthropologist whose name escapes me, many women ended up almost fingerless.

In Africa, poaching many times is a way of feeding their families when there are few employment opportunities. The huge profits are mostly made by middlemen. It doesn't make it OK to poach, of course, but this reality needs to be taken into account when considering how best to fight poaching. Many groups are starting to take this into account & are involving local communities & seeing what they can offer to alleviate the extreme poverty that drives some men to poach. One woman I know personally has an organization dedicated to saving elephants, & her group has built a very large school for the local kids. They are also involved in the community in other ways.

What about quick-flashing lights, causing seizures? Do they work?
Carin replies on Nov 21, 2018:
I thought it was a serious post about that at first! So funny!
After 35 years of marriage, a husband and wife came for counseling.
Carin comments on Nov 20, 2018:
Sounds like she needs a new husband.

@jondspen It sounds like her complaints were proven to be valid with that last line!
I agree with this

In my dreams. My wife makes my life miserable...but she would never share me. And we can’t really afford to split the property...so?
Carin replies on Nov 20, 2018:
You always have a choice. I just left my husband with a minivan full of stuff, 2 kids & a dog last week. That's it. I'm so much happier already.
I agree with this

I'm surprised at the negative responses! Not everything is sex... I'm wondering if people don't understand actual friendships.
Carin replies on Nov 20, 2018:
My impression from the original post was that it was not limited to just friendships. & open relationships or polyamory are just not for everyone. Certainly not for me.
Do you ever want to believe in the afterlife? (Post is sad.)
Novelty comments on Nov 15, 2018:
In a sense, the fact that someone that lived is an indelible and eternal fact, if you had a time machine you'd still find them alive when they were alive. The fact that I'm responding to your post is an eternal fact even if we all forget that I even did it.
Carin replies on Nov 20, 2018:
I find that very comforting.
America is only country in the world without free health care for its citizens
Diogenes1972 comments on Nov 19, 2018:
This statement is inaccurate. The map provided indicates the countries with universal health care in green. By logical extension, the dozens and dozens of countries in gray do not.
Carin replies on Nov 20, 2018:
I think Mets meant to say the only industrialized or first world country--something like that.
Do you believe in the big bang theory?
JackPedigo comments on Nov 19, 2018:
I also believe in the possibility that the Big Bang was not an isolated event. The emerging multi-verse theory says big bangs happen all the time. We may only be one of numerous universes!!!! How about that for a kick in the pants????
Carin replies on Nov 20, 2018:

I can't put breakable ornaments on the lower parts of mine & can't leave space underneath for the cats or dog to walk around under there & cause trouble. I pile the empty ornament boxes all under it & cover it with a white sheet.

@confidentrealm Me too. I'm sorry that happened to you as well. It's been years but I'm still instinctively cautious about what sort of identifying information I let become public. Who knows, it may even have something to do with me never using my own photo on any profiles anywhere online. I never thought about it before.
Misphonia or ASMR?
Carin comments on Nov 7, 2018:
I would not be surprised if I had misphonia too. Especially snapping or clicking noises. I want to punch people who crack their knuckles! But what is ASMR?
Carin replies on Nov 18, 2018:
@LadyAlyxandrea Oh my gosh, me too!! I have Central Auditory Processing Disorder & just understanding what they're saying on TV takes all my attention. Then ex-to-be would come in & play his guitar right next to me. He definitely needed a brick thrown at him too!
So, here's a question.

Carin replies on Nov 18, 2018:
@LadyAlyxandrea Wow, how interesting. I get goosebumps from some opera music, generally female voices, & also Tuvan throat singing & sometimes didgeridoos. But by about the 10th time my kids cock their Nerf guns I'm ready to strangle them. That horrible plastic clacking noise! & not only that, all their Nerf darts are behind the couch or floating in the fish tank & they are just doing it over & over again for no reason at all! Are they intentionally trying to eliminate my last shred of sanity?

@TheGreatShadow Interesting! She went on her own or with a group? What's in the Czech Republic? When I lived over that way the Iron Curtain was in full effect. It was like Eastern Europe didn't even exist! I wish I could still afford to travel...I've heard wonderful things--sounds like communism delayed development there & preserved more of the old ways & the old villages & towns...perhaps not to the benefit of the inhabitants but nice for tourists anyway.

Don't be a creeper. I am sure you know what creepy looks and acts like.
Carin replies on Nov 17, 2018:
@Olnoseven Men have difficulty seeing how scary they can be to some women just by being men--big, strong, & known to commit about 99% of violent crimes. I know it's a huge generalization in a way, but personal safety or freedom overrules PC.

It often is a way of labeling a man to dissuade him from communicating.
Carin replies on Nov 17, 2018:
If they're trying to get you to leave them alone by saying that, maybe they just don't feel the chemistry is there, & you have ignored or missed previous signals? Unless I misread what you're saying, you feel that someone told you you were creepy instead of just saying "I don't think this relationship is going to work out for me..." which certainly sounds needlessly unkind!
So ladies.

Carin replies on Nov 17, 2018:
@Rabid_Canadian At that point i think they are usually doing it to "punish" the woman or trying to maintain control over her through fear & almost constant surveillance. They may say they want a relationship, but it's not true unless you consider keeping someone captive through force & fear being a relationship.
So ladies.

Same here. All we can do is work with what we have now. We ought to give ourselves credit for realizing & admitting we don't know what the heck we're doing half the time, & then trying to do something about it without much outside help. We can't even learn new social skills very easily without first recognizing & unlearning deeply ingrained patterns & habits. I admire the effort I see you putting into it.

I lived in West Germany for 4 years as a kid & I do agree! Along the Rhine there seems to be a castle, or a ruin of one, on almost every other peak. Sadly, the beautiful old terraced vineyards I remembered from the sixties & seventies had been all bulldozed by the nineties to allow tractors & other machinery to replace manual labor. Not nearly as pretty now.
