Bill Maher had a segment last night about Trump losing favor with the GOP. Yet he's headlining CPAC? Sorry, Bill, I just don't buy it; it'll be just like it was in '16 and '20. They claim they don't want Trump then suck his dick when the polls are close to opening.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
ChestRockfield comments on Feb 26, 2022:
That is not the crux of the question. There is an answer, and I know what it is. I'll give you all a chance to come up with the answer, and, more importantly, the *reason* for the answer, on your own before I post it. A hint: The most important question you need to answer to find out which came first is, is a chicken egg what comes out of a chicken or what a chicken comes out of. As for the meaning of life: there is none; we are an unfortunate accident.
The Republican Party is cracking under the stress of the influence of 🦧.
ChestRockfield comments on Feb 26, 2022:
Yes, the Republican party is seeing a divide. But so is the left. I contend that the left's is much more significant in its effect on elections. In the Republican primary in '16, the candidates were saying unbelievable shit about about each other. Several of them even banded together in a plot to deny Trump the nomination in never-Trumper fashion. As soon as he did, however, these candidates and prominent members of the Republican party changed their tune and started kissing his ass to unite the party at the polls. The Republicans are amazing at this. They hate the liberal ideology so much, that come the general, the R next to your name can absolve you of any sin you may have committed... except *mayyyyyybe* child molestation. While Roy Moore did *barely* lose his Senate seat election by two points (let that sink in, almost half of Alabama was cool with a child-molesting US Senator to prevent a liberal one from winning) there were allegations Trump raped an underage girl and he had the highest average approval rating among one's own party in 60 years (see graph below). So how about the Democrats? We know they have huge disagreements in the primaries as well, albeit less bitter and disgusting, but do they fall in line and vote their party in the general? I don't think so. The Bernie Bros were a very loud, very vocal group of dissenters. There have been a bunch of studies on the percent of Bernie primary voters that defected and voted for Trump with results ranging from 6-12% (see one below comparing numbers of defectors to Trump's win margin in swing states), while one of those studies found that virtually 0% of Clinton primary voters voted for Trump. Could this have cost Clinton the election? Is it at least evidence that party loyalty among Democrats does not come close to matching that of the Republicans? Add to all this the fact that much of the anti-Trump fervor will be absent in the mid-terms and the fact that Biden's approval ratings are absolute shit, and I think it's the recipe for a slaughter this November for the Democrats.

ChestRockfield comments on Feb 20, 2022:
To be honest, I don't really know is there's an answer to that or even how to determine what it is if there is. That is why I only concern myself with being logically consistent on that point. If you play both sides, and there is an answer, you're definitely wrong somewhere, but if you're consistent, you still have the possibility of being right. Two small side notes: 1. 'Fitness' of organisms has, for billions of years on Earth, been directly related to how well they could destroy other life forms, consume them, and use those resources to make more copies of themselves. 2. It is likely impossible for a human to exist on this planet without killing other animals either directly or indirectly.

They have such distrust of liberals and science they probably think every doomsday scenario is fake and designed to take away their freedom. But we are fucked. In so many ways. We're staring down the barrel of a global collapse of democracy (including the US) and the long held practice that advanced liberal democracies don't attack each other. And along with that, apocalyptic disasters resulting from climate change. You can already see the start of it. Once-in-a-century events happening at exponentially shorter intervals, more powerful storms, etc. Thawing permafrost that is creating its own global warming positive feedback loop. The Thwaites "doomsday" glacier ticking away. We're going to see mass migration, starvation, booming disease vectors. And people are *still* having children. I don't understand that AT ALL.

Debbie Downer alert for the paragraph that follows, sorry. It's a nice thought, until you think about any longer than three seconds. Trees in a forest don't try to scam your grandmother or hack into your online bank accounts. They don't take away your reproductive rights or prevent you from marrying the person you love. They don't vote to allow the people who wish to shoot up your child's school to have unfettered access to firearms. They don't poison your drinking water and pollute your air just to increase their profit margin. They don't molest your children and hide behind the cloth. They don't dismantle democracy and try to hide behind pardons and immunity. So while yes, maybe there are some superficial "you're toos" we could dispense with by turning people into trees in our minds, I just can't appreciate all those humans that are rotten to the core *just the way they are...*

I do. It's essentially impossible not to patronize conglomerates anymore. At least where I live. And to be honest, people expecting you to pay more than you have to for your goods and services by guilting you into thinking it's your duty is the same kind of responsibility shifting that corporations did with the recycling/trash problem. Congress has the power to level the playing field and they don't because they're too accustomed to getting their beaks wet to do the wrong thing. There really is no way to stop them without legislation, either. They have too much money for boycotts to work against them, there needs to be laws. Chipotle moved in to town almost right next to this mom & pop Mexican burrito joint that was really tasty. Chipotle proceeded to run special after special for free burritos running at a huge net loss until the mom & pop finally went out of business. I mean, if you're well off and you want to pay full price for your burrito, that's awesome for you. But if you're broke and you can get dinner for free instead, how do you pass that up (especially if you like Chipotle, personally I wouldn't even eat it for free, but it's not because of principle, it's because I think it's trash).

ChestRockfield comments on Feb 14, 2022:
You cannot. Period. @Fernapple is more diplomatic in his response, and it will probably turn less people off than my blunt 'no' by saying "at best". But if you couple what he said, "only chose from the selection offered to you by your brain" with the correct statement @skado made, "People can believe only what they find believable" you can start to get a sense of the truth. You can't choose what propositions enter your conscious mind as options, and you can't choose which of those options your brain doesn't immediately reject as implausible/impossible. You also don't choose the physical or chemical composition of your brain at the point any of these "choices" need to be made. (Nor do you choose to be born, who to be born to, what they believe, how and where they raise you, what they expose you to, etc. People will argue that they *eventually* get to choose where they live and what they expose themselves to, but...) It's in these options that remain after all that that people believe they have free will. If you look at the science, though, you'll see that there's no room left, so to speak, for free choice.

Here is an interesting article on whether or not we should stop calling addiction a disease.
ChestRockfield comments on Feb 12, 2022:
"There's good reason to speculate whether addiction is actually a disease. If yes, one must formulate definitive causes, symptoms, treatment protocols, and the likely time required to cure it completely." False. Idiopathic diseases have unknown causes. Some diseases have patient specific symptoms. Some diseases have no treatments. Some diseases have no cure. "increasing willpower as opposed to other ailments such as typhoid, cancer, and diabetes." False. The belief that someone can overcome addiction by choosing to increase their willpower is as idiotic as a belief that someone can overcome diabetes by choosing to increase insulin production. If one could simply choose to increase their willpower, why doesn't everyone have maximum willpower? "People today face numerous issues such as domestic abuse, poverty, obesity, unemployment, social isolation, but these problems need not be termed as a "disease" to find solutions." False. The author is conflating causes and effects here. "Instead of medical intervention, it's better to deal with them by providing social and psychological support, education, employment opportunities, nutritional consults, etc." False. Just because supportive services could have a positive impact, or even a majority of the positive impact, does not mean medical intervention is unnecessary and thus it's not a disease. Incurable diseases necessarily will benefit more from supportive services, but that doesn't mean they're not diseases. I don't think I need to continue to waste my time on this...

The way I look at it, if you have to question whether or not something's racist, it doesn't much matter if it's *actually* racist. If you're questioning it, others are too and some have probably decided that it definitely is. Even if you're right, and it's not, is that really the argument you want to have? The hill you want to die on? It'll be a pyrrhic victory AT BEST. My crazy QAnon uncle who I stopped talking to years ago (you can guess why) got into a huge argument with his gay son and his gay son's black husband about how "Get your cotton-pickin hands outta there" was never associated with racism, it was simply a thing his Italian mother said to her Italian kids when they were into something they shouldn't have been. But even if you don't know it, or see it, if it is, or even seems like it might be, save yourself the headache and just use one of the hundred other ways the English language affords you to say what you want to say.

Even the term "more intelligent" is really hard to nail down *scientifically* speaking. Then, even if you have all that sorted out, it *still* doesn't grant you the cause:effect that's being postulated. There could be a correlation between irreligion and intelligence independent of anything related to evolution or instinct. If a group of people 18 and over still believe in Santa were less intelligent than a group of people who stopped believing in Santa before they reached that age, or conversely, if really unintelligent people were never told of Santa when they were young so they never *needed* to stop believing, those could cause correlations that are independent of evolution, and the same could be true for religion.
This seems accurate.

This is so vague it's meaningless. And if they do mean *actually* alone for any appreciable amount of time it's probably outright false.
There may be a reactionary attitude creeping into this site's administration.

Looks like the other post and user are no longer available. Unless that person blocked me, but I don't ever remember coming across that name before.
Is this guy single?

Wrote this a long time ago. I think I even posted it here because I remember getting into a ridiculous argument with TMW (who I won't bother tagging because he refuses to talk to me anyway) about it. It is quite possible that religious moderates are not only part of the problem, but the biggest part of the problem. Their large base gives an air of legitimacy to the belief system and provides an environment in which religious extremism can survive and thrive. Compare the "crazy" beliefs of the marginalized with those of the religious. How different are they, really? A man wearing a tinfoil hat pleading for people to heed his warning about alien abductions and the anal probes that went along with them is not taken seriously by anyone, *except maybe those that are also wearing similar hats.* So how is it that we're legislating morality based on stories that contain taking snakes and donkeys and people that rise from the dead? It's because there's a huge portion of the population that doesn't think these are ridiculous things to believe. Without religious moderates, religious extremist groups would have no where to recruit members or obtain funding. They would, in effect, be reduced to another crazy, yet powerless person we ignore in the course of our everyday lives, albeit with more asinine headwear.
The last 2 paragraphs are important to understand.

Scathing, brutal assessment of the US. It also happens to be 100% true.
Some poetry for the denizens of pinata-ville about one of our all-time favorites...
