I am curious, does anybody have any "favorite" holiday themed movies.
ChestRockfield comments on Nov 29, 2021:
I watch all the Friends Thanksgiving episodes on Thanksgiving (if not several times that week). I watch Home Alone once or twice each Christmas season (couple years ago went to see it with the Cleveland Orchestra playing the music, it was amazing). There's no Halloween movie I watch every year as there are too many good ones and none that I think are so good they need to be watched every year at the expense of others, so I just watch ones I haven't seen or seen in a while. I watch Con Air every Con Air day (July 14th). That's all I can think of.

What you said was * technically * true, and you were very civil while she was not... That said... I have a real problem with the framing of your argument. To state thing X, which seems to only be for the purposes of causing thing Y, with zero mention or regard for the necessarily resultant thing Z, as if it was in a vacuum and thing Z didn't exist, is very disingenuous to say the least, and downright dangerous when thing Z is so bad it completely overshadows thing X. For instance, if I were to run targeted ads to young girls on Facebook and Instagram who follow beauty or dieting trends or who have markers for self-esteem issues about the fact that cigarettes are an appetite suppressant, especially with zero mention about the dangers and intentionally-addictive nature of smoking, you could see how that would be a cunty thing to do, yes?

ChestRockfield comments on Nov 27, 2021:
Did you cook the carcass down with too much water? I found several years ago that the best stock I've made came after barely submerging all the bones and stuff in cold purified water with aromatics/ celery/onion/carrots and refrigerating overnight. Then I pressure cook for several hours. Strain. Chill to pull off a bunch of the fat (there's usually a lot the way we make turkey and stuffing). I've never had to add bouillon. Then season and add the normal soup fixins celery/carrots/noodles/egg. You may need cook it down more. Or if you're really invested, get a roaster chicken and use the stock you have to cook that carcass down too. If all else fails, check to see if you caught covid and can't taste.

Does it matter where the votes are from? I agree with your experiment statement. The world is shit and broken. We don't share reality. Our horrible behavior is going to turn this world into a hellscape full of migration, starvation, war, & disease. People who continue to have children are both failing to see the problem and exacerbating it at the same time, and dooming their children to live through an even more horrible life than we will.
Sums up the whole matter and tells us just how corrupt the trial was....

Why not evolution?
ChestRockfield comments on Nov 15, 2021:
What exactly do you mean by product * or byproduct * of evolution? Evolution is a result of random genetic mutations that, sometimes, provide benefits to the organism that increase the likelihood those genes will be passed on to offspring. I personally do not believe there is a * gene * that causes religiosity (considering people can be both religious and non-religious over a period of time), but I suppose there are genetic traits that increase the probability or propensity for one to believe. If you mean it's a byproduct because religion came about as a result of our evolution, then, sure, but that's literally true of every single thing ever created or changed by humans, so it's really a non-staement at that point.

I assume you're joking by the way you phrased it, but I'll say my piece about karma anyway. None of that shit means anything as long as people are so fucking obsessed with themselves that they feel the need to reproduce. I drive a supercharged Cobra that probably gets 8mpg, have no where that collects recycling in any city around me (that is even if the ones that do actually recycle) nor would driving it any appreciable distance make any sense, eat meat, the whole nine, and I've still done astronomically less harm to the environment than every single parent. And even they can't make a bit of difference as long as governments don't hold major corporations accountable. The climate scientists told us we'd pass the point of no return if we didn't change our ways years ago and we didn't listen. Even if we're not past it now, somehow (which is highly unlikely) the manufacturing needed to make the green products and power them would be more than enough to push us over the edge. The only way this planet can start to recover is when humans die off by the billions from the mass migration, starvation, and drastically increased disease transmission from an ever-growing population of vectors. Just as well, because we've begun to devolve. Humans had their shot. They blew it. So let's grab a cheeseburger and jump in your sports car and let's Thelma and Louise this bitch straight off a cliff!

Yes. Ish. With 3 different girlfriends we brought another woman into bed. None, however, were "according to Hoyle" threesomes where everyone has sex with everyone, but they were pretty close and still awesome. Nonsense. There's a huge difference between choosing to be alone * at times * and being alone always because you can't find a suitable mate. The explanation he gave is a response to a different scenario all together. It's as stark of a difference as someone saying, "I feel bad for people that work their asses off and still don't make a living wage" and responding, "I don't feel bad for them at all. I often times volunteer and work whole days for free and feel amazing about it at the end of the day! They just need to realize how good they have it."

Interesting, that's not where I thought this was going. For some reason I thought it was going to be about the corporate machine indoctrinating people and conditioning them to work for low or no wages while the overloads continue to consolidate more and more wealth. That aside, I'm pretty soured on community service from an experience as a teenager and I'm not too fond of people in general. Add to that the fact that I can barely make it through my work week as is, and it equals a hard pass from me.

ChestRockfield comments on Oct 21, 2021:
Nope. I accidentally fucked a Republican once. It was exactly like that scene in Curb your Enthusiasm except I looked up * after * we were already having sex and saw a big poster of George Bush. To be fair, she was my first gf I had back in grade school, and she grew up to be really attractive, so I would have hit it no matter what (also, how many people can say they had sex with their first girlfriend) but it still threw me. But could I marry one? No, I think all Republicans are greedy, stupid, hateful, or a combination thereof, so I couldn't respect them. Without that, how can you have a relationship? Side note, we discussed politics after that and years later she messaged me and told me she switched parties. I'm giving my wiener the credit for that one. Without him, the discussion would have never happened...

AOC and Omar won their primary challenges and the first 4 won their elections. 3 of the 4 had primary challengers that they all beat by a large margin and all 4 won re-election in the general. The two newest members won a primary challenge against an incumbent and then the general. All six are considered a safe bet for next election, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if they pick up more members next time too. Most of the things they are fighting for are wildly popular.

I have a long analogy about not peeing in the pool even if other people do it simply because it's not the right thing to do. Then you realize that a neighboring town of rich people is paying to run a pipeline for all of their urine to dump into your pool. What we as individuals do is completely irrelevant when governments let corporations pollute and dump toxic shit into the environment with impunity. But they sure try to make us feel guilty like it's our fault just like they did with single-use plastics a couple decades ago. Anyway, I've already done the single most important thing one can do for the environment by a factor of 10, and that's not have children. So anymore I don't give a shit. Hell, my city doesn't even collect recyclables anymore, that is if they ever actually even recycled any to begin with. ChestRockfield comments on Oct 13, 2021:
I say 'I don't know' all the time as an agnostic atheist, but I don't know how related to my beliefs about religion it is. I think it has more to do with my desire to not be wrong. If I don't know something, I either say I don't know when asked directly, or simply keep my mouth shut if I wasn't (no point in volunteering that you don't have anything to add). As for how often I lie, I imagine pretty often, but rarely, if ever, in an attempt to be maliciously deceptive. Sam Harris makes a really good case for never lying about anything ever, but I just can't imagine it in practice. Unless you were famous for not lying, thereby providing anyone you come across foreknowledge that you wouldn't lie to them at all, the self-imposed inability to lie would definitely come off as a personality disorder or maybe autism.
It's hard to understand the reasoning behind these facts.

Good news. And their idiocy is probably going to create another variant that'll increase that spread even more.

A few posts/comments I've written on the isssue of abortion .
ChestRockfield comments on Oct 11, 2021:
Your first part is predicated on faulty reasoning. If the only prerequisite for termination of human tissue is an inability to suffer, that opens a whole host of scenarios where humans can be killed. In your second part, you attempt to base the decisions over whether one should maintain or lose bodily autonomy on a Utilitarian model, yet you have no ability to quantify suffering for the women or the fetuses, and thus, have no appreciable way to determine what will actually cause the least overall suffering. Furthermore, it is readily apparent that each woman's circumstances would be different than most if not all others, so even if you could calculate the net suffering of aborting and barring abortion, you would have to do said calculations for * every individual * that wished to abort. Obviously, this would be both impossible and any delay from performing the computations would thereby delay the abortion and change the suffering calculations. Your third part is fundamentally flawed for the very same reasons you disagree with others. Your claim that there should be a cutoff, especially considering you're saying you don't know what it should be, means that it is necessarily arbitrary, and no more valid than any other cutoff proposed by anyone else. In my opinion, there is one and only one argument you can make for the pro-choice stance that doesn't open you up to counter-argument: nothing should have more of a claim to your body than you. No other argument is needed. Any time you try to put limits, parameters, caveats, requirements, prerequisites, you both allow someone else or many other people hold a higher claim to your body and open yourself up to arguments why others things should or shouldn't be imposed on us. There are tons of good thought experiments on this subject that highlight what I'm taking about. Go to the website below and click on "Whose Body is it Anyway?" for one example. I think it will help you relieve some tensions you have in your belief system and clarify what your argument should be and why. https://www.philosophyexperiments.com/whosebody/Default.aspx

100% That debate I posted about recently touched on this subject. They asked me if I was proud to be Italian and were quite taken aback when I said no. I explained that I didn't * do * anything to earn my heritage, so even if it was demonstrably better (which I also deny) I don't own any of it.

@SnowyOwl just posted this yesterday. How perfectly fitting.

That's total bullshit. Not all opinions are equal or valid, and humiliating/shunning people is a very important tool to try to either change or suppress them. Do you think we should respect the person and be fine with them voicing the opinion that black people should be slaves or Jewish people should be gassed?
