@Druvius A woman I used to work with tried to tell me once that people can choose to feel one way or another about something. That it was my fault that I hadn't chosen to forgive or stop being angry about something. I tried to explain that people cannot choose how they feel. She insisted, emphatically, that I was wrong. Her claims are almost identical to the implication your comments have made here: that not being happy these people died is the mark of a better person, a person you are choosing to be, and by extension, I am a worse person for not choosing as you have (all but once). Several months after the argument I had with that woman, she was at work in tears, devastated. She had just found out that her husband had an affair. It took every ounce of restraint in my body not to tell her she should just choose to be happy about it instead of sad. People can't choose their emotions. Thinking you can, and that your choices are superior, makes you both elitist and wrong.

As a healthcare worker who has worked with covid positive patients since the beginning of the pandemic, who couldn't choose to stay home as a method of protecting myself, I'm glad that the government did what it could to protect the supplies we needed to protect ourselves while we saved lives. The masks that went to the hospitals, instead of someone's closet and eBay page, may have prevented a collapse of the healthcare system. The * type * of thinking / upbringing that would lend itself to one who doesn't reject general teachings and themes of most religions would also tend to allow for continued belief of misogynistic ideals. This is not to say that one who was raised religious couldn't have been raised by feminists who instilled those principles in their child as well, or vice versa, but * generally * misogyny and religiosity are more likely to be found together than misogyny and atheism. @JonnaBononna I fundamentally disagree. You really feel that any amount of sexism, even if it was exhibited unknowingly, is equivalent to the worst possible form of intentional behavior (like rape, as you suggested)? In your mind, a man who holds the door open for one sex, but not the other, is just a bad as a man who instead of holding the door, knocks a woman down on the ground and rapes her? I think the push back between the Ultra-woke and even the progressive left proves there are degrees to these things. But even if none of this convinces you, you really don't think the potential of alienating allies in men who generally try their best by saying their minor transgressions (which may not even negatively impact women's rights) are just as bad as forcible rape making them think "nothing will ever be good enough, so why even bother" is reason enough for you to at least not display such beliefs publicly? Am I really alone in thinking "women should do the dishes" and "I'm going to forcibly rape women because they are nothing but objects for my pleasure" are vastly different things??????????

@JonnaBononna There has to be a hierarchy here. If slave owners were super nice to their slaves on a personal level that would really be preferable to someone who wasn't as nice but believed they should have freedom?? This is not simply a "political belief". This is about taking freedom away from women and wholly reducing them to objects. No amount of "being nice personally" should mean a thing if there isn't a fundamental base of believing women deserve autonomy. Personal feelings shouldn't cloud out facts, here. In the results of a Pew research study seen here, 87% of atheists believe abortion should be legal in all/most cases while only 53% of everyone does. This means that the religious would have to be even lower to make the average 53%. So there's a huge percentage more theists than atheists that think women should be reduced to objects. I can't understand how that's not a prerequisite here.

Not all men think those things. I would love to have a woman that has a great job and gets paid according to her skill and value. I want her to provide exactly zero care for our zero children. And I would love to equally split our combined chores based on what each of us are better and and like to do more (e.g. if she can't boil an egg, I'd be more than happy to do the cooking or if she's interested, cooking with her to teach her my tricks). I'm perfectly fine moving to her and being with her family. I have very little left anymore, but being with the person I'd love most in the world would be my top priority, whatever that entailed. My greatest wish is to find a woman who is my ride or die person. Us against the world. Even when we disagree we'd still have each other's back 100% from everyone else's perspective and then worry about working it out when we're alone because no one else will ever mean more to each other. Always trying to make each other look their very best. I have seen couples like that and envy it more than anything else in the world. But to have that, you have to be that.

ChestRockfield replies on Jan 8, 2022:
@TheMiddleWay The fact that we live under the same constitution(s) is a manner of coexisting. If two people coexisting with in this manner disagree on important, fundamental truths (like who the leader of the country is, if global warming exists, if a virus is real, if women or people with non-white ancestry count as citizens, especially if these people have the power to codify these beliefs or vote for people that will codify them, etc.) it seems unlikely you can have any real conversation even if you could * technically * convey information to one another. The only reason my response to the name calling was a third of my paragraphs was that I felt I conveyed my point in two. Number of paragraphs or time needed to type my response doesn't dictate its length, content does. So a short blurb about a tangent like that doesn't really change anything for me. And you're also not taking into account that if I only use such language to talk about (not as often to) a person with whom I do not believe reconciliation is possible, I don't believe anything is lost. I couldn't even have a conversation like this with the people I'm referring to. It's why I knew you were trying to prove a point, it's why I didn't engage with it, it's why I continued the discussion. For as much as we disagree on stuff, I think we share the same reality. I think we can disagree on what to do when we see something, but at least we see the same thing. I think you're making a very valid point, and I think you did it in a very effective way. I agree with you it's important. I think the only thing we disagree on, really, is where in the hierarchy of necessary components civil discourse exists. It's like we're talking about the best way to build a house of cards and you're insisting you must have a solid level table with even legs that doesn't wobble before you can even start with the bottom layer of cards. I'm absolutely agreeing that's true. I'm just saying it's nice to have a quality table, but that the quality of the table is irrelevant when it's in a houseboat cruising around a choppy lake.

@TheMiddleWay That's not what I was saying at all. Obviously, I'd prefer if * my * reality was the prevailing one, but that's literally true for every individual. Talk to a schizophrenic and tell me he wouldn't prefer everyone else seeing the world the way he does. You can coexist with people you share a reality with without communicating it to each other. * That's * why I said sharing the reality is step one before sharing a way to communicate. It's probably actually worse for everyone that people can communicate with each other enough that they know they * aren't * sharing the same reality. You can keep calling me names. A. @TheMiddleWay I'm not saying * I'm * necessarily the one that has the most accurate understanding of reality, I'm simply stating that it is not shared. I'm also saying that when you are communicating with someone, the ability to communicate (e.g. speaking the same language as in your example) is not the first or most important step if you don't have a shared view of reality. If I see the sky as neon orange with green polka dots and you think it's light blue, being able to tell each other that wouldn't really matter. @puff Even if they never changed it, how could subjective terms like "enormous numbers" and "illness" equate to a "definitive scientific definition". You're failing to realize that even changes in population size or the way people live and interact with a new microbial threat would invariably alter a concept like 'pandemic'. What if there came along a pathogen that was 0% fatal, but horribly debilitating in 100% of the infected population. That would have been something they couldn't have foretold when trying to define such a concept, and wouldn't meet their first definition.

New features are likely never going to come. Admin has been MIA for a long time now.
ChestRockfield replies on Jan 3, 2022:
@JennyRad Probably wouldn't be a bad idea. Doubt there's anyone here that would care too much about not having to hear from me anymore if this site went down though.
Have more republicans (vs Democrats) died of COVID?
barjoe comments on Jan 3, 2022:
I haven't seen those actual statistics. I will say that early in the pandemic when blue states had more Covid cases and deaths, piece of shit Republicans blamed Democrats. Now that red states have more Covid cases and deaths, piece of shit Republicans blame Democrats.
ChestRockfield replies on Jan 3, 2022:
@barjoe Blaming Democrats because they are your political opponents is as different as it possibly could be from blaming Republicans because they follow someone who disseminates misinformation, actively campaigns against the use of preventive/protective equipment and practices, tells people not to get vaccinations, rallies people indoors during a global pandemic, do I really need to go on, or do you get it?

You really don't see a difference between those two things?
