Hi all. Newbie here, first post. What is your greatest fear?
snytiger6 comments on Jan 3, 2022:
My greatest fear is that the U.S. will soon no longer have a democracy, because the republicans will whine whenever they lose that "the election was rigged", and even though they have no evidence people will believe then and work to undermine democracy.
ChestRockfield replies on Jan 3, 2022:
The Center for Systemic Peace has already downgraded the United States and no longer classifies it as a democracy as of 11 months ago... Don't know how much stock you put in them, but we definitely don't have completely fair elections. Every Republican state has been purging voters and enacting voting restrictions not to mention gerrymandering the fuck out of the states for decades. https://www.systemicpeace.org/

ChestRockfield replies on Jan 3, 2022:
@Organist1 Secession seems most unrealistic to me as well. Not only does it seem that secession is not a possible legal remedy, but also that a state can't even bring suit where that could be the outcome. Look at the nightmare that is Brexit and tell me even if it was legally possible how it could be actually realized * within * a country. It's fun to theorize not being part of the same country as Texas, but it's just not possible.

@Organist1 Civil War seems like it would be geographically difficult. * Not to mention the police force and military would seem to have to take a side. They couldn't let people run around killing their political opponents. * We live amongst one another now, not like the North and South in the first civil war. It seems much more likely to me that the one of the next two times Republicans gain power, our failing democracy finishes its decent into authoritarian rule, and no one in the world inside or outside the US will be able to stop it. Actually, I can't think of anything * other * than that happening. Hopefully I'll be gone by that time, but I doubt it.

@JennyRad That's not me at all. To care about who makes an argument is inherently fallacious. When you said it looked like an ad (which means you may have found it enticing or persuasive as ads tend to be) I figured if you knew it was a hand written account of a real person's experience with a company and coin, it may put your mind at ease of the mistrust people generally have of advertisements. Seems like they just flat out told me to fuck myself in code. I was planning on responding to them in 6-12 months with the price of the coin and what the value of the portfolio would be if they had invested when I posted.

@JennyRad El Salvador made Bitcoin its national currency. It's an amazing tool for correcting runaway inflation. It's a decentralized currency that is not subject to international politics like governmental currencies are. It's NOT going away. The only question is, are you going to get in before everyone realizes this is a real thing? You really think bubbles like the corrupt, deregulated housing market and car loan market are a safer bet? Even if it's a bubble, which I think * real * coins aren't, there's still money to be made at no greater risk than the markets people invest in in the US. Talk to be about 2008 and how stable and safe "normal" investing is.

ChestRockfield replies on Dec 22, 2021:
@Tejas That's where you're wrong. You're assessment of the negative effects of being an anti-vaxxer is woefully inadequate and very myopic. 1. The vaccine can severely lessen the negative effects of covid, not just whether or not the infected person will die. This can drastically decrease strain on the healthcare system, conserve medical supplies, increase availability of care for those that need it for conditions there * isn't * a free available shot to reduce likelihood of needing inpatient care for. 2. Depending on speed of replication, a vaccinated person will likely have the virus for a shorter period of time before the body fights it off. This results in several benefits to society: 2.a. a shorter time in the infected before recovery means less time during which they can infect others. 2.b. a shorter time in the infected before recovery means less time during which the virus can mutate during replication. 2.c. a shorter time in the infected before recovery generally means a lower viral count in the body. 2.d. a lower circulating viral count when a person infects another could mean a lower viral load with which they are infected, in turn lowering the negative effects. There's plenty more I could write on the subject, but honestly, if that's not enough, likely nothing will be enough to convince you of the importance/benefits. So even if the vaccinated are spreading it more, which it debatable but unlikely something that can be proved, it * is * likely that the virus spread from and to vaccinated people is insignificant when assessing societal harm. Last variant it was consistently that 93-97 percent of people in the ICU w Covid were unvaccinated. Obviously this variant is too new to have reliable data, but the first person to die of it here * was * an anti-vaxxer...

@UUNJ You're thinking of it like breeders breed dogs, with intention, for the purposes of changing the dog's appearance or temperament. This is not what is meant in the realm of evolutionary biology. There is no intention or puppet master. Simply put, things that provide an advantage are passed on to successive generations. So it is not * my * premise that humans are bred to, it is billions of years of evolution that has blindly dictated that at the genetic level, greed and selfishness are winning traits. What's readily apparent, however, is that humans have an extraordinary ability to harness the power of selfishness and greed to consume and destroy like no other species ever has on this planet. It may be an uncomfortable realization, but I don't really see how anyone can deny this with any level of intellectual honesty.

@Castlepaloma Are those other conditions communicable? In 2018 TB was the deadliest, vaccine-preventable disease in the world, by a HUGE margin (a death rate with a factor over 12 by comparison with the second deadliest disease). It infected 10 million and killed about a million and a half. Then Covid came. With a yearly average of 137 million cases and 2.67 million deaths, there's no comparison. It's so much more infectious and while not as lethal per case, it's way more deadly to the population at large. So no, there aren't more deaths from 'greater conditions' that could have been prevented. But I guess you wouldn't know that because you didn't personally witness any of those millions of people die.

I wish the discourse over the fact that men cause pregnancy and that they need to take responsibility for their emissions was as long as this one....alas....
ChestRockfield replies on Dec 18, 2021:
@Freespirit64 1. I want * all * fetuses to be aborted, so don't threaten me with a good time. 2. That's a nonsensical argument for two reasons: a. It's like saying all peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are caused by jelly because you have to have jelly (sperm) even though you necessarily need the peanut butter (egg) and the bread (womb) as well. Even if you still want to illogically claim the pregnancy is the man's fault, the baby would still be the woman's fault, because she's the only one that can choose to bake the bread or take it out of the oven. b. Women have raped men. More often than not it's an older woman sleeping with an underage boy, but that fact still remains. Women have also stolen semen from men with the express purpose of using it to get pregnant. For these reasons, even if you can't see why your argument is nonsensical because of a, you should still be able to realize that it's wrong because of b. 3. Who * cares * who's "fault" it is. That seems like a dumb thing to concentrate on. Let's stick to the facts that matter. Women should have bodily autonomy all the time, no matter what. Any woman should be allowed to abort any fetus at any time for any or no reason whatsoever because to put restrictions on that destroys bodily autonomy. Period. Anything else is just distraction and opens you up to counterargument. I can't think of, nor ever been presented with, a logical counterargument to 'people * should * have bodily autonomy'. The only thing opponents have is examples of other areas where we don't have bodily autonomy, but that's not an argument we should * lose * more autonomy, but rather an argument where we should gain more.
Yes! Please!

ChestRockfield replies on Dec 15, 2021:
@TheMiddleWay But that's my point, humans * can't * behave in a manner that's sustainable. Even if some try, others will exploit it as a weakness, take advantage, and their greed will cause them to capitalize on it. And it's not like it's just going to be a switch that gets flipped (barring an extinction-level event first) and the shit's uninhabitable, it's likely going to be a progressive, exponential decline into unimaginable suffering for humans and animals alike. That, however, is not to say that we * owe * anything per se, but our behavior is definitionally greedy. Somewhere along the way there were mutations or many generations of advantages from greed bred into humans and the ability to exploit it in an unparalleled, and since unduplicated, way. Like I said, I'm not saying it's our fault, and before this goes down the rabbit hole, I'll concede now that if there is an objective morality it's currently unknown and probably unknowable, but without going that far, I think that these natural processes that honed and amplified greed and selfishness produced a shit-awful species. I would like to add, again, that pretty much all of my other stances on things were formulated * before * I realized just how awful humans are, so your claim that my worldview is so much different than yours * because * of this is inaccurate. If there's one thing I could get you to understand from all this, it's that.

And @TheMiddleWay wonders why I hate humans. They are greedy, shitty, awful creatures.
ChestRockfield replies on Dec 14, 2021:
@TheMiddleWay There is likely an INFINITESIMALLY small portion of the population that lives in harmony with mankind and their environment at large. I personally know or know of zero people who * wouldn't * be classified as awful. I'm sure there may be some, but it would be such a small percentage it couldn't possibly be redeeming for humans collectively.
I WISH EVERYONE a HAPPY HOLIDAY with THEIR FAMILY this CHRISTMAS at least UNDER A TREE.

You should lead by example and visit with a many people as you possibly can. Maybe bring get well cards directly to all the patients that are positive for Covid, but never with one of those liberal hoax masks that only serve to mock your immune system by claiming it needs help!
ChestRockfield replies on Dec 12, 2021:
@Castlepaloma What are you afraid of? Your immune system is better than a vaccine!! Wouldn't it really stick it to all those filthy, stupid liberals if you got covid as an unvaccinated person and ended up even healthier on the other side? Man would they look stupid with all that egg on their smug stupid little faces. You should also see if you could catch measles from an anti-vaxxer co-op so you can earn the superior immunity from beating the disease with your better-than-a-vaccine immune system... that is unless your mom was a scaredy cat and forced one of those anti-freedom vaccinations on you when you were a kid. I bet you can go to bug chasing forums to find parties where you can really show off how much better immune systems are than modern medicine! Make us all look like fools.

Was there a mass shooting in Australia? Don't know how that would invalidate it as an example though. They imposed restrictions and then didn't have a mass shooting for a quarter century whereas we have them damn near every day.

@Tejas They won't need emblems when they all die off from all the diseases they won't protect themselves from.

@Castlepaloma "people are dying of heart disease a 100 times greater than covid deaths, since covid started vaccines" I don't think this says what you think it says. Ha ha ha ha. "Don't know of anyone in my area or family who died of covid death to give an ampathy card to." I don't want you to visit the dead, I want you to hang out with the infected and breathing and give them big long hugs.

I believe a woman has a right to choose to have an abortion. I'm vaccinated and plan to get the booster shot soon as I can. I think everyone should get vaccinated to help end covid.
ChestRockfield replies on Dec 12, 2021:
@TheMiddleWay Well, you're all kinds of wrong. As I stated in my previous comment, believing one thing about a topic does not necessarily have to inform your beliefs on another. To conclude that it does, and the project that onto someone else, even after they've already told you that's not the case, is the myopic thinking of a child. You also mischaracterized my position as wanting to eliminate humans which still implies actively killing self-sustaining living people. Furthermore, in case you were unaware, I am not a god who can dictate a command and have it followed and I clearly stated that I think women should be able to choose to do whatever they want, so obviously that doesn't equate to advocating the elimination and extinction of humans. To anyone else reading who doesn't jump to conclusions or pretend they know everything that's in someone else's head, my thoughts on abortion were formed MANY years before my disdain for humans, so it is necessarily impossible that my thinking humans should stop having babies is the reason I think women should be allowed to have control over their bodies. And I don't think I have to say this, because it seems pretty self-evident to anyone who's not clearly blinded by the moral implications of this topic to the point that they can't stop making illogical arguments in defense of the pro-life position, but if my thoughts on reproductive rights were * actually * informed by my thoughts on humans in general, it seems my position would be anti-choice through forced sterilization. The MiddleWay has fallen asleep at the wheel and veered far to the right and can no longer even * see * the middle in a rational light.

@Tejas How is that not something people who advocate for gun control would like?

@TheMiddleWay Who the fuck is talking about genocide? See, this is the ridiculous, nonsensical, illogical shit you've been doing since you started talking about abortion. And again you conflated arbitrary and non-arbitrary reasoning. Man overboard.

@TheMiddleWay "and as such that everything else they say is on this topic is irrelevant to me because I personally do not want all blacks dead." This doesn't follow logically. Just because you don't want the same thing as someone else doesn't mean that anything that have to say is irrelevant because a. they can vote or change the minds of other people who vote so it very much could affect you and b. wasn't it you just the other day that misquoted Aristotle saying, “It is the mark of an educated mind to entertain a thought without accepting it"? "you are incredibly biased against humans, to the extent that you want them all dead" This also doesn't follow logically. Just because you want something to stop reproducing (die off) doesn't mean you want all existing instances of that thing to die. Even if it did, it still doesn't follow that my arguments are invalid or illogical. Are you saying one's thoughts on a type of thing are inextricably tied to all your beliefs about how it should exist or not? If one doesn't believe in capital punishment does that mean they love convicts? What if there are layers to these things? It would be impossible for a KKK member to think it's wrong to enact laws that are bad for black people even if the reason is that it's also really bad for white nationalists? In order for an Ad Hominem to not be a fallacious argument, you have to show reasoning why the things you're claiming invalidate their argument. Give the fact that I said women should be allowed to CHOOSE whatever they want in regards to a pregnancy, it's going to be pretty hard to claim my disdain for humans, collectively, means my arguments about bodily autonomy are invalid. And finally, in trying to draw a parallel between those two, you have made the classic illogical blunder of conflating arbitrary and non-arbitrary reasoning. It's as dumb as saying hatred of racists is the same as racism because you think "hating a whole group of people is the exact same thing no matter what defines the group". You are off the reservation on this topic. You are making illogical argument after illogical argument and as much as you claim to be neutral on the topic at this point ("only asking questions to see where you stand") it seems to several of your readers that it not at all the case. If you still think it is, you need to take a step back and reassess why you're making so many nonsensical claims seemingly in deference to the pro-life argument.
