The Republican Party is a danger to American democracy. [chicago.suntimes.com]
ChestRockfield comments on Dec 13, 2020:
And a critical part of the problem is that since Republicans no longer believe in objective truth or facts, they think we're worse for democracy?! 🤯 They can't see that a policy they dislike is different than systematic dismantling of the fabric of democracy in the exact same pattern that many other democracy-turned-authoritarian rule situations have gone over the past several decades. I'd like to think that when it's a Republican that becomes our first dictator they'd realize it was their policies and behaviors that caused it, but they'll probably be too stupid to even know we're under authoritarian rule.

Will you know your sin of feeling like you're winning when you're actually loosing again?
ChestRockfield comments on Dec 10, 2020:
To me this is childish thinking, ignoring the reality of the situation. Fact is, we live in a system that will always be two parties. A government without proportional representation will always default to two parties. The problem is that while the Republicans remain in lock-step at the ballot box (save for the very, very tiny group of Republican never-Trumpers) the Democrats are fracturing into a group of realists, and a group of idealists. If the candidate veers too far left, we lose the moderates, if the candidate is near the center we lose the far left to a wasted, protest 3rd party vote. The electorate is shifting right in this country and around the globe. The reasons for this are irrelevant. The reality is that as the electorate shifts, so too must the candidates if they want a shot at winning. The may have been an outside shot that with all the new voters, AND a party that could stick together on election day, they could have elected a progressive, but that's just not the reality of the Democratic party. They seem to care more about their ideals than power. Thus, Biden is the result of Democrats not uniting more than it is anything else.
I'm trying to understand this.
ChestRockfield comments on Dec 9, 2020:
Absolutely is a fool's errand. There's no fixing this. Once you get to a point where one side doesn't even believe in facts, there's nothing you can do to convince them they're wrong. All this comes to a head one of only two ways: authoritarian rule or civil war... unless a mass extinction event saves the day.

Matt makes the case that women should have total autonomous control of their own pregnancies, but ...
ChestRockfield comments on Dec 9, 2020:
I don't agree with any of their arguments. 1. The remedy for the man not being able to decide whether to keep or terminate a pregnancy would clearly be that he can absolve himself of all responsibilities by relinquishing all rights. Don't know why it took the caller so long to spit that out. 2. "You just want consequence-free sex" is not a counterargument, it's an Ad Hominem attack. He's trying to discredit the argument by claiming the person making it "wants to be a dead-beat dad" (which he stupidly voiced, clearly alerting astute listeners that he was making a fallacious argument). If the counterargument wouldn't hold any water if the original argument was made by a different person (in this case, a woman or a man that was incapable of reproducing for instance) then it isn't an actual counterargument. 3. Matt seemed to suggest that men shouldn't be able to relieve their financial responsibility because women can't. Women can choose to relieve their financial responsibility through termination, abandonment, or adoption. It's not the same by nature of the process, but it is still a form of that "consequence-free" sex he keeps going on about. 4. Why should men be required to accept full potential financial repercussions of sex, but women shouldn't. i.e. A man needs to accept that a pregnancy and child and financial responsibilities may result from sex because not paying for unwanted child(ren) may cause undue influence on a women that may make her lean toward termination, yet a women is not required to accept that a pregnancy they don't want to terminate may result in financial responsibilities that a man can't or won't pay resulting in her decision to keep or terminate being dependent on her financial capabilities alone? That just doesn't seem logically consistent. "Life's not fair" shouldn't be the response when a more fair remedy exists.

Not to mention doing it in small increments, doing it not incarcerated, not losing your job/gf/house, not making it difficult to get a job as an ex con, the [slightly] lower probability of getting raped, etc, etc, etc should make it clear.

So if Kevin knew she was married, why would he think he could invite her to one of his co-worker's homes on a national holiday?
Does this seem off to anyone?
ChestRockfield comments on Nov 28, 2020:
Seems like most everyone is going one way on this, so I'll give a possible taste of the flip side of the coin. We weren't there to hear * how * things were said, so we're all taking stabs in the dark anyway. Long term investments in a future can only be realized if there's a future. Perhaps it wasn't a bribe so much as a statement of willingness to be fully invested and committed. Even without a partner I'd be willing to state if I were in a long term relationship I'd help them with something like that. It's possible it was meant the same way someone might be willing to have a baby * if * their partner would marry them (or vice versa). Move in together * if * they were engaged. There are probably tons of examples of conditional things like that that aren't bribes necessarily. Try to figure out how it was said/meant from context and assessment. We are missing a lot of that info.

But when I actually listened to what it was theorizing, it made a tremendous amount of sense. Especially since by that point I had come to the realization that humans do not have free will.

Are you ready to reduce your carbon footprint?
ChestRockfield comments on Nov 21, 2020:
I voted number of children even though global warming is near the bottom on the list of reasons I never want a child. You really ought to have the reason, "doesn't matter because we're already past the point of no return" on the list. The statistic that the amount of oil that has already been bought but not yet consumed is more than enough to push us past the point climate scientists agree is the point of no return has been quoted a lot. Even if we tried to not use the oil that was paid for (which none of those greedy fucks are going to be willing to take the loss on that) the carbon emissions from the production of the replacements would be just as damaging (see Adam Connover's explanation from his going green episode). I truly believe that the greed and selfishness of humans is such that the only hope is a currently-non-existent method of eliminating carbon from our atmosphere. That, coupled with the fact that the last 4 years Trump let companies pollute with impunity making my attempt to reduce my carbon emissions akin to having a non-peeing section of a pool, and the fact that most places don't even recycle your recyclables anymore, makes me not give any fucks anymore. I'm going to drive my 8mpg 600hp Cobra, eat delicious burping cows, and throw all my refuse directly into the trash. And anyone that has even one kid can go fuck themselves if they want to complain about my carbon footprint, because it's still smaller than theirs by a factor of probably 10.
