Someone replied and then blocked me and said some asinine shit I couldn't see. Someone screenshot and sent it to me, so I responded in a post of my own. It was reported and got removed. That's some bullshit if you ask me. They can block me and say whatever they want and when I rightfully angrily respond they can censor me further. ChestRockfield comments on Aug 26, 2020:
If the worldwide systemic and repeated rape of children at the hands of priests didn't shake any faith, I don't know why one guy watching his wife get boned would. If people are questioning their faith is because they're realizing they had faith in something stupid just like most of the people that frequent this website, not because of Falwell.

I don't see it surging, but I don't think, at least in the US, people will ever be * forced * to meet in secret. B & C. Probably as long as humans have left. I see a catastrophic event that ends [human/most] life on Earth to be way more likely that the complete abandonment of all religion. Hell, humans are starting * new * religions still.

A lot of us have felt that way at some point. Most of us have gotten past it. You made the right first step coming here to talk about it to get from one point to the other. There are several family members that would still give me shit about it, if I still talked to them that is. But I'll never let them keep me quiet or make me feel ashamed for it. There are two important things to remember here: 1. You didn't choose to stop believing in God, and you can't choose to start believing again. It's no one's fault that you no longer believe, or that they still do. 2. If you need to stop talking to one or more of them because of the way they treat you or they stop talking to you because of your realization, that's on them, not you. You didn't do anything wrong.

I don't suggest anyone "explain away" things with easy catch-all answers (like 'God did it' ) on either side of the coin. Do a little research and learn about how the brain receives and processes information. There may be a lot of info that you learn that makes those "lies and brain farts" morph into reasonable/plausible explanations. Even then, however, you don't need to close up shop. The object is to avoid ending inquiry with unsupported conclusions - that's what religion does.

ChestRockfield comments on Aug 10, 2020:
If you ask a hundred people here about the definitions of agnostic and atheist you'll probably get 99 or more answers. To me, it seems very clear cut, though, and I don't understand the confusion. Atheism deals with what you believe. Agnosticism deals with what you can know. They are 0% in competition with each other. I am an agnostic atheist because I do not believe in any god, but I know we can't know whether or not one exists.
While on a long drive recently, I was listening to a show on NPR about immortality and time.

I had this exact argument with my buddy about a week ago. He wants to live until the universe reaches heat death. To me it sounds like the worst fucking case of FOMO I've ever heard of. Not only do I not want to live forever, I don't even want to be alive now. If, however, there was an option to be invincible for 5 years then die, I would scoop that deal up in a heartbeat. I think the people that are saying they want to live forever have not really thought about how agonizing it will be when they're living in the post-life hellscape Earth will become at some point. All alone. For ETERNITY. Not a thousand years alone and unable to die. Not a million years. ETERNITY.

It is theorized that the universe will end in heat death. Even if we can't know this will be the case, it is still a possibility, thus, saying energy is eternal is not necessarily true. > god is all things and no thing Mathematical impossibility. If we assign the variable X for god and 1 for one of all of the things the premise states god is, we have the equation: X=1, but because of the second half of the premise, we also have the equation X [does not equal] 1. > love is all things and no thing Hate is a thing. ChestRockfield comments on Aug 8, 2020:
Also, I will say that donating to charity of your choice in your relative's name as suggested by many is also not something I would do. That's not right for the same reason asking you to donate to a Christian cause isn't right. Something is not a gift if it's for yourself instead of the person you're giving it to. My super right-wing Christian uncle used to buy my siblings and me a year subscription to the NRA for our birthdays every year. We told him to knock it off. That's an anti-gift. Not only is he not getting us something we'd want, but money was going into the coffers of an organization we despised because of us (and there's a record of us being NRA members for years).
I am in a quandry and would like some opinions.
ChestRockfield comments on Aug 8, 2020:

ChestRockfield comments on Jul 23, 2020:
Seems like it should be a case by case basis, but the biggest difference to me (if I were the one that was going to be deciding) is the fact that Weird Al records the music he's parodying, Weird A.I. does not. To me, it's a cheap knock off that can be done rapidly and incessantly. What if this A.I. made a parody with the original music and the lyrics were different, but largely indistinguishable from the original? Is that still fair game?

One of the major problems I see with this, as there would be to agreeing we'll just call that which makes us sick spirits, is that those who engage in this type of labeling are rarely, if ever, the ones who will discover what the actual cause is. Religious people who end all inquiry into something with "God did it" are only saved by the 'grace' of someone that didn't say it. The more we say it's okay to label unknown causes with a generic label without reason, the worse we all are.

She has been living as a black woman for YEARS, so successfully that no one knew she wasn't, and likely experienced racism in kind, and racism against her children, and experienced the racism felt by her siblings -or- B. A black person that appears white who lives the beginning of their life without outsiders knowing they are black. What if they were adopted. What if they didn't even know until later in life when reunited with their parents? Does A still not get to claim they are black while B does? How much racism does one need to experience and for how long before they're in the club? This is my point, there are so many variables and so many different ways people will judge things, why should only outsiders (who necessarily know way less about you than you do) get to determine if you're black enough but only you get to determine if you're woman enough? What happens if some people think you're black enough and others don't? Do we need to poll everyone? Who's vote counts in this poll?

Have you ever been offended by being an agnostic or atheist?
ChestRockfield comments on Jun 20, 2020:
I think what the OP is asking is: "As an atheist, do you find yourself bring offended by things similar to the way a Christian may be offended by someone saying 'Jesus Christ' in anger, or a Muslim being offended by a depiction of the prophet Muhammad." If that is the question, no, it's next to impossible to offended me. Anyone willing to throw some dead baby jokes at me to try?
A Question of Morality -- Looking for Opinions -- Should saving a puppy mill dog just be written...
ChestRockfield comments on Jun 19, 2020:
Wow, excellent question! WARNING. SUPER UNPOPULAR OPINION BELOW. I will, as I do with every other question about cruelty to animals for the pleasure of humans, come down on the side of: we have collectively agreed that torture of animals for our pleasure is okay. I personally do not see any difference between torturing pigs for food, cows for leather, fish for tanks, dogs/chickens for fighting, horses for racing, etc. so I don't see any reason why whatever puppy mills do to dogs to produce their product should be punishable by law when we currently think it's totally okay to dip live chickens into vats of boiling water to remove their feathers. I think it's a huge miscarriage of justice that Michal Vick was sentenced to a stretch in federal prison for cruelty to dogs (don't give me any shit about 'it was actually for gambling' because you and I both know it was this country's unjustified love of dogs that he saw the inside of a cell) when likely everyone in that courtroom tortured animals by proxy every single day of his trial. Until we pass sweeping legislation that protects all animals from torture, I don't think anyone should hold a moral high ground simply because the animal they like to torture isn't as cute. Also, why get a dog at all? Cats are better in almost every single way.

Of the formerly religious people, at what age did you abandon your faith?
ChestRockfield comments on Jun 16, 2020:
I went to Catholic school until second grade. They drilled us on religion. Mass twice a week and Bible study I think every day. When we got to Mentor, we were enrolled in public school, but my mother sent us to PSR. I think that's where it started. The PSR teacher would tell us stuff and we would contradict her because even at our ages, we knew the Bible better. I think that initial discordance and questioning set something off. Within a few years I was so disinterested in mass I would spend the hour counting the lights or ceiling panels. It took several more years for my mother to let us stop going. For years I never gave it much thought, never prayed, never practiced in any way. It wasn't until my second year of college when my Anatomy & Physiology professor taught a lesson that ended, "So some day, I'm going to be walking down the street and I'm going to see you at a protest. I'm not going to care what side of the street you're on, but when I walk up to you and ask you why, you better be able to tell me or I'm going to march my 120 year old ass back up here and change your grade." And then the epiphany: I SHOULD have a good reason for every single thing that I think can do. So I began to examine everything to make sure I had reason to believe it, and God and religion was easily tossed in the trash. Instead of it not occupying any of my thoughts, I became a staunch disbeliever. It was around then that I began to debate religion and philosophy online and honed how I defined my beliefs... which now stands at Agnostic Atheist.
