Question: why are health care workers even showing anti-vaxxers compassion?
Paul4747 comments on Sep 6, 2021:
That's the nature of their work. When someone is sick or dying, you don't (I hope you don't) shake your head and say, "Well, you brought it on yourself, you know. This is all your fault." If that were the case, smokers with lung cancer, meat-eaters with colon cancer, overweight people with... ...

@powder Dragged off? From the table at a restaurant? You have to know that doesn't make any sense. First, you'd be carded at the door and you'd never make it to the table, which I'm fine with if the variants keep getting worse. Secondly, if a police unit comes because you're breaking the rules it would be no different than if you forced your way into a school with your child who wasn't allowed to be there because of their incomplete vaccination status or your refusal to comply with a store's no shirt no shoes policy. "Moreover, it’s increasingly clear that those who recovered from covid-19 are better protected if they also get vaccinated. Numerous studies have found that vaccination after infection stimulates a substantial antibody response that’s more robust than either recovery or vaccination alone. A report published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention concluded that such vaccinated people have half the risk of reinfection compared with previously infected people who remained unvaccinated." So even if you have antibodies, it still doesn't make sense not to require the vaccine for certain things.
Men, it's not that hard.
ChestRockfield comments on Sep 7, 2021:
I wish they wouldn't make nonsensical arguments. Would they be okay if only women voted and a conservative/religious majority took hold and banned abortion? I think not. So they shouldn't make illogical arguments. The sex of the person taking away their rights is irrelevant.

@OldMetalHead Gallup Poll from this year shows 43% of women self-identify as pro-life. Older people vote at higher percentages, too, so the 58% of pro-lifers 65 years of age and older carries even more weight. Eliminating men from the equitation does not guarantee reproduce rights are protected...

@powder Your claim that the only reason to coerce vaccination is herd immunity is false. Even if you don't believe it reduces the risk of transmission, it definitely reduces the risk of death or hospitalization. These reduced risks come with financial benefits for society at large and reduced strain on healthcare systems. The fact that the rest of your argument is predicated on that initial assumption invalidates it, * but * I will say that people can't be trusted not to lie about their infection/recovery status, so it's not that it * won't * be taken into account, it's that it * can't * be taken into account. (Should we allow parents to claim they don't need required vaccinations for school because their child caught and recovered from the disease?)

@powder "A virus that killed 95% would not spread very far as the vectors would die before they can spread it." False. My fictitious disease did not detail incubation period, infectious period, or time line for lethality. Just because something is super lethal doesn't mean it'll kill you fast. Pancreatic cancer is about 90% lethal but that shit can take YEARS to kill you. "If the threat/ risk was so great and the vaccine effective enough, it would sell itself." Also false. There are people who will not trust the government/ scientists/ doctors/ the"elite" / etc. no matter what is at stake. Look at current vaccines children are required to have for school. There is a growing population of anti-vaxing parents that won't vaccinate their children with vaccines that are 100% effective and tested safe and known for DECADES. There are tons of stupid motherfuckers that would refuse it no matter what, and the rest of the population should have the right to be protected from them with restrictions placed on the unvaccinated (like them not being allowed in school).

@FrayedBear To me there is. I explained the difference. If you don't see it that way, that's fine. To me it's the difference between being at war with another country and an innocent civilian getting shot in the crossfire and needing assistance and someone who was helping the enemy getting injured while helping them and then asking for assistance. Those are the same to you?
Question: why are health care workers even showing anti-vaxxers compassion?
ChestRockfield comments on Sep 6, 2021:
They don't. But most of us don't have any control over the matter. That's why we come to places like this to vent and hope they all die before they make it to the doors of the hospital.
ChestRockfield replies on Sep 7, 2021:
@Paul4747 Are you part of 'we'? There are several healthcare workers that vent here regularly. And what you're describing is magical nonsense. The only way the higher percentage of anti-vaxxers the get covid and need hospitalization * wouldn't * show up on our doorstep is if they died at home. There's no scenario where the ones that need our help don't get it and just "fade away" without it being a result of them dying.

@powder It drastically reduces it, and the symptoms from it. The argument still stands. For the sake of argument though, imagine this disease caused death in 95% of those that contracted it without the vaccine and only 5% with it and reduced the likelihood of transmission by 80%. @rainmanjr I think you're joking, but that is also irrelevant. It could be a full grown sentient human and it's still up to the woman. Imagine for a moment there is a sick individual who happens to be a national treasure and due to a rare blood type and antibody combination, you are the only person in the world that can save them. By being surgically joined together including your blood supply, you can effectively be a 24/7 dialysis machine for them that they will need for the next 6 months or so until they will be well enough to live on their own again. Should the state be allowed to force you to undergo this surgical procedure to save this beloved individual?

@Charlene Yes, but women make up 53% of the people that voted in Texas in 2016. They * could * do whatever they want. Instead, 47% of them voted for Trump and lost their reproductive rights as a direct result. Maybe some of them bitches want to live in Gilead, but the majority that don't should have seen this coming and become single issue voters. So, if all women everywhere don't see this and become single issue voters at least until the balance of the court changes, they only have themselves to blame. They make up 55% of the vote nationwide, they need to start exercising their majority for good.

@p-nullifidian I disagree. Personally, if I were going to place some restriction on how men could vote it would be that they can't vote to prevent a woman from getting an abortion because they don't have the ability to stop it on a personal level. But to be honest, no one should be able to vote to take anyone else's rights away just because they hold a majority. Should white people be allowed to vote to take away black people's rights?

@St-Sinner I'm not suggesting it, I'm stating the fact that it is... at least based on the numbers we're given and the numbers you thunk we should assume are the real numbers. Even if you want to suggest Thailand only reports 10% of their covid deaths as covid deaths (and somehow hides the other 90% of extra deaths in other ways that are above the norm) they * still * have better numbers than us. Our death per million people IS TWELVE TIMES HIGHER than Thailand, so even if you multiply their stated number by ten ours is still worse (just like the India number you brought up inexplicably).
I guess this is a vent post.

@St-Sinner So you did. Begs the question though, why did you bring India into this exactly? I never said their Healthcare was better than ours, but if you're vaccinated, you're probably better off being in a place with drastically less cases to reduce your chances of getting it in the first place.

"Racist Biden! Unbelievable, I don't recall even Trump doing this!" That was, in case you were unaware, the entirety of your written contribution to the post. So, actually, * all * you did was compare. Poorly. Furthermore, if you didn't see people calling Trump racist, you weren't looking. Either way, not an excuse. A simple Google search or Agnostic search would have revealed how much of a total racist pile of shit Trump is. It also speaks VOLUMES about how shitty and one-sided the news sources are you frequent that for almost 6 years since candidacy and many, many decades in the public eye there have been countless stories about him being racist (and every other 'ist' as well) and none of it managed to make its way to your screen, but Biden says something a half year into his presidency and you see it and comment on it immediately.

@FrayedBear First of all, "negros"? Really? Secondly, trying to compare Biden to Trump on the racism spectrum is like trying to compare decapitation to a paper cut on the injury scale. Trump has a lifetime history of being a racist pile of shit and he never slowed down. Third, I don't know what your comment means, but if you couldn't see the video, it was Trump saying, "There's my African-American" the way one would say, "There's my n-----". You're on drugs if you think Biden is more racist than Trump.

Like right now, the thought of a melty white American over a stringy provolone sounds amazing to me. I never thought to do that, but I'm definitely going to try it. I strongly recommend you try a light smear of cream cheese on one or part of one the next time you make them. It might surprise you, but if not, no big deal, right? I would never put Whiz on mine. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheesesteak And only bagels? Come on bro. @SeaGreenEyez So if we're saying one could study a subject for near a decade and get a doctoral degree and still not be considered an expert, wouldn't that say more about A, B, & C's ability to recognize an expert and less about the person's actual expertise? There are millions of Americans that believe Fauci is a quack and not an expert in the field of immunology and infectious diseases. Does that make him not an expert? And while you may debate whether or not Ms. Diallo had the "actual" experience of a black woman, she was apparently considered to be * enough * of an expert to teach 5 different college courses, either way, we weren't talking about life experiences, we were taking knowledge/expertise. All that aside, this was not about Diallo. It was a theoretical white person who earned their PhD in African-American studies. Simply put, is saying someone can't be (or is, by default) an expert of something simply because of the color of their skin a racist thing to say?

Seems a though you're only saying this stuff to distract from the fact that you made an unsupportable claim that seemed to support the OP, got called out, and couldn't back it up.

@Ello So no actual examples. No evidence. Pure nonsense. Good to know.

It is the damned so-called middle who keeps selling out to the same Wall Street billionaires that have created this mess... There is a progressive left but we actually have two right-wing parties. The Reagan wing of the DNC headed by the Clintons and the Trump Neo-Nazi wing of the GOP...

@dalefvictor I just made this same argument to someone who told me the best things to invest in/stockpile were guns and gold. I told her if shit is so bad US currency isn't worth anything it's likely gold will be worthless too.

ChestRockfield replies on Aug 25, 2021:
@Ello That said, * do * you have any evidence of * any * president controlling the price of gas? Or was that statement completely nonsensical conjecture that only served to derail the conversation and waste a bunch of time?
During a long discussion with too many tangents to even try to remember, we touched on a topic that ...

Seeing racism in everything is often a sign of being racist. If a South African bushman, or an Australian aboriginal, claims to be better suited to survival in semi-desert than a white city dweller, he is not being racist, merely factual. However, there ***are*** some white city dwellers who are ...

@Petter You really think modifiable and non-modifiable "categories" are the same thing? Aside from that, I already admitted there are circumstances where claims of X because of skin color Y could be made specifically to provide a non-racist counter-example. These claims are almost exclusively statements of fact though and are not the types of things that usually come up in conversation. * When was the last time you felt the need to mention in conversation that dark-skinned black people are less likely to get sun burned than Irish people? * Also, I have no idea what "allowed racism to dominate" means.

ChestRockfield replies on Aug 25, 2021:
@Ello You need to be clearer who and what you're responding to. You just said, "That is a ridiculous claim", but the last thing I said to you was not a claim. You're not making any sense. You * seemed * to be talking about Biden because the the OP that started this argument IS ABOUT BIDEN. If you have evidence * another * president did this, you should have said 'so-and-so president did such-and-such to influence the price of gas, but I don't have any evidence Biden has done the same.' To simply claim it's possible and present no evidence so we'd know you * weren't * talking about Biden in response to me saying presidents don't control the price of gas would be interpreted by a rational intelligent person as a suggestion * Biden * had done it.
