ChestRockfield replies on Aug 24, 2021:
@lerlo There are other implications as well that highlight how offensive the statement was like the fact that it completely downplays the countless hours these dancers had practiced by claiming most of their talent was innate because of their skin color. It also suggests that if white people had the same base level of skill that black people were born with they would be better dancers than black people. There were others that came to light during the discussion, too, but she couldn't see reason.

@lerlo That makes it perfectly clear now. Thank you for the reply. And I'd certainly agree it wasn't * meant * to be racist, but looking at objectively one could see how it was. When I pointed out how that other comment about black people dancing was racist, that other nurse was shocked. She thought there was no way it could be racist because she thought "it was so complimentary to black people". Just because she didn't know it, and couldn't understand why when it was explained to her, and thus, didn't intend for it to be racist, doesn't mean it wasn't, in fact, a SUPER racist thing to say.

Seeing racism in everything is often a sign of being racist. If a South African bushman, or an Australian aboriginal, claims to be better suited to survival in semi-desert than a white city dweller, he is not being racist, merely factual. However, there ***are*** some white city dwellers who are ...
ChestRockfield replies on Aug 24, 2021:
Those aren't the same thing at all. The "bushman" is the part that makes them the expert, not their race. You actually didn't even denote race in your example. Why exactly couldn't a white person be a "South African bushman"? I think South Africa is like 10% white, so there's no reason they couldn't be. Similarly, the "city dweller" is the informative part, not the "white". * Would a black city dweller fare any better because he was black? * See? So these examples are not analogous to what we were discussing. It is not "merely factual" that one's skin color makes them more knowledgeable about African-American studies. And there is zero truth to the claim that noticing racism is an indication one is racist. Do you think noticing other things makes you those things too? Does noticing child abuse mean you're an abuser? Does noticing alcoholism mean you're an alcoholic?

@Mooolah Not a dig at all. I was recently made aware that people think I'm incredibly weird because none of my beliefs/convictions are rooted in emotion. Even my reasoning for why I love cats is all logic (save for the fact that I think they're adorable, then again, puppies are cute and I want nothing to do with their high-maintenance asses). But I strive to make sure all of my beliefs are logical and consistent. If I find (or have pointed out to me) a tension in my beliefs, I examine them, debate with myself (or ask help from others) and amend my position(s) to resolve it. So maybe some would find what I said to be mean because I'm attempting to get you to behave like me, but since I think everyone should, I meant it in a nice way. What that boils down to is that you shouldn't let * wanting * to believe something override your inability to rationally justify holding said belief. (e.g. There are people that * want * to believe the color of their skin makes them better than others, but there is no rational reason to believe that, so that belief * should * be abandoned.) That said, it's very possible I'm confusing one Republican or anti-vaxxer's previous statements with another's here or there, so I can't claim to know much about the Captain's history, but just by virtue of this OP alone, he's making what is very likely an idiotic standalone statement, that could likely get way dumber if viewed with the backdrop of former claims. Now you can disagree with that if you'd like, and that he's actually really intelligent and well-read, but are you sure you can justify that belief? I'd be willing to bet I can justify mine. I agree with you and Takei. For my entire career I've always been the caregiver that would tell others I didn't want to know about what a patient had done (like the prisoners) or their ability to pay (because some would complain about being bossed around by the indigent) I just wanted to do my best to care for my patients from the moment I got them until they left my care. I have actually gotten in trouble for not catering to someone the hospital told me was a "VIP", and I did my best for the people that would never pay a single dime of their bill because that's what I signed up for, and I wasn't going to let some unrelated nonsense dictate how I prioritized my care. But this, is different. People don't really see how their own weight gain negatively impacts the system. Same with smoking or drinking or even drug use sometimes. And generally, I think others view them in the same light because we all have and need vices in this life to get by without walking into the ocean. But when something like this happens, and there's a free, low-time-investment action you can take to do your part, it's a big fuck you to the entire system and everyone else pitching in to fight a common enemy. They're actually teaming up with the enemy and fighting against mankind by helping to spread the virus, helping it to mutate, wasting resources, and placing so much unnecessary stress on the Healthcare system and its workers that it breaks or comes real damn close. I'm kinda confused why anyone is surprised we don't * want * to take care of someone who was just fighting against us... even though, unfortunately, we will.

@273kelvin As my 5th grade gym teacher Mr. Namosnick repeatedly exclaimed, "Say what you mean and mean what you say, because if you don't say what you mean, no one will know what you meant to say!" Very specific language is crucial in riddles and logic puzzles. You could have very easily worded it in a manner that did not force your audience to disobey your commands in order to get the correct answer. (Notice how my answer was as correct as it could be given your parameters because I said I would shoot at the 100%, but recognized missing was the best thing that could happen.) I took a stab at it. It probably needs some polishing, but at least it doesn't ask the impossible. You are involved in a 3 person duel. The participants have all agreed it would be fair that the less accurate you are, the earlier in the order you get to shoot. * Finally, your historically terrible aim has done something besides earn you ridicule. * So of the 3, you, with your 33% accuracy, get to go first, followed by someone who hits 50% of the time, and finally the crack shot who never misses. All hits are fatal, so you either miss, or you hit and kill your target. Your intention is to overcome the stigma of being a lousy shooter and be the only one that walks away from this duel. You'll show 'em it ain't only about good aim. Well, it's that time, and you're up! What do you do?

Your best hope is that you aim at the 100% and miss because that guarantees you get to shoot again before you get shot at or killed. I think * you * need to examine the possible outcomes more.

Okay, we'll all assume you were saying that because none of the NFL owners are black and many of the players are, the money could be more responsibly used by the owners. Very cool of you to say. (Maybe you should have just explained what you meant when someone pointed out that it was very ambiguous. I doubt I'm the only one that took that as an admission you are a racist.) Also, you ignored ALL of the rest of my reply, so I'll take that as an admission you were talking nonsense and I proved you wrong.

@Flowerwall I don't know what you're confused about. We have almost no restrictions on guns and we have the highest rate of gun deaths and mass shootings among advanced liberal democracies. Other countries that have enacted varying degrees of gun control have reduced those statistics, i.e. gun control has worked in countries all over the globe. If you're making the assertive claim that gun control will not do anything to reduce gun violence or mass shootings in the US, you should be able to support that claim considering all available evidence suggests the contrary. That would be like me saying if I jumped off a building I would float to the ground safely and you would reply that everyone else who has ever jumped off a building succumbed to gravity and was injured or died and that I would need to provide some evidence that my assertive claim had merit (or prove it by jumping off a building). https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2015/12/4/9850572/gun-control-us-japan-switzerland-uk-canada https://www.vox.com/2016/2/29/11120184/gun-control-study-international-evidence

And you think they cost a million dollars because the money is needed to pay the athletes? 🤣 Super Bowl commercials cost $5.5 million/30 seconds because that's what advertisers will pay. Period. The broadcaster of the Super Bowl opens bidding at whatever price they want based on history and their own market analysis, and advertisers pony up and pick their slots. As the more desirable spots get filled the price may drop slightly or if advertisers aren't paying the initial asking price it will drop as well, but if the players only made $100k, the price wouldn't be any different. @powder "But that would be an infringement of workers rights I suppose. Easier to mandate and enforce vaccine's than masks, washing and gloves." 100% incorrect. The company I work for has mandated masks for employees, and I doubt they will ever rescind it. A company can make whatever rules they want for their employees and customers. You don't * have * to eat there, so it doesn't really matter what you want the employees to do. Don't like they're not wearing masks, take your ass somewhere else. No restaurant in your area requires masks, learn how to cook. As for your dickhead analogy: There are mandates and laws for driving too. And if they don't follow those mandates, they * will * get banned from the road. No one is forcing you to get the shot, so don't get it if you don't want to. But you can't blame society for trying to protect itself from dickheads like you, just like you wouldn't blame it for taking away the license or jailing someone who won't stop driving drunk.

Just like always you set up nonsensical hurdles we need to jump with arbitrary numbers before we can talk about gun control. You just think of another problem and pull the number 75% out of your ass and say that's what we need before a gun control discussion. And even if we got there, you and your ilk would just set up another hurdle that is completely irrelevant. I showed you other advanced liberal democracies have done it and you ignored the facts of the matter because you want to stay ignorant and comfortable in your echo chamber. And of course I wasn't there, that's why I used an if/then statement based on what you told me. And it's still true. No one should lose on that side of the debate unless they're uninformed, moronic, or both. You still haven't admitted the deaths you posted about have absolutely nothing to do with defunding police, but that's not at all surprising. Finally, I don't care how I come across to idiots. Me proving you wrong isn't for you, it's for people on the fence that still have a chance at being able to evaluate arguments and separate good ones from bad ones. If a 'fuck' derails them so bad they can't remain objective, they were bound to fail anyway. So, to that end, you're a fuckin' idiot.

@Flowerwall 1. If you lost the gun debate to someone who simply said "then criminals will be the only people with guns," that speaks more to how poorly you debate than anything else. Also, you * can * reduce the number of guns and put restrictions on how they can be sold and owned, etc. To claim it's impossible is idiotic and patently false considering advanced liberal democracies elsewhere in the world have done it with great success. Furthermore, how fuckin' stupid is the claim, "Well, if we can't get guns away from every single bad guy, then why even try to do anything at all?" We can't eliminate every drunk-driving death, but we have laws in place to try. We can't keep every single child from being kidnapped and never returned, but we still send out Amber alerts. Plus a million more examples that if you're too dumb to think of on your own, you're probably too fuckin' stupid to recognize defeats your argument if you read them. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/mar/15/so-america-this-is-how-you-do-gun-control 2. Drug deaths * are * on the rise, and that's precisely one of the things that could be helped with funds reallocated from the police to other social services. If you looked at the data honestly, you'd know that harsher penalties and police enforcement doesn't do any good while actual programs for addiction and decriminalization work wonders. @powder I'm 100% not saying it should be forced on people (remember, I love that anti-vaxxers are dropping like flies and want to ride this trend to thin the herd of as many of them as possible), but businesses denying use of their services to the unvaccinated is completely in their purview. Schools mandating masks and vaccines, when available, to children? I'm behind that too. One's belief that they had covid (which they may not have) and that their immune response is sufficient (which it may not be, plenty of people have gotten it again) is not good enough. And the numbers don't support that either. If 97% of people that need hospitalization and die are unvaccinated, then the vaccine is obviously more beneficial than whatever natural immunities and prevention methods people think will work. We know that people can get infected after the shot and after having had covid, yet the shot keeps people alive and home at an astronomically higher rate.

I agree. The pro-vaxers and the scientists and the CDC and the doctors want to encourage everyone to get vaccinated in order to reduce or eliminate the threat of Covid and bring an end to shutdowns and travel restrictions and save lives. How dare they! They are stomping on the rights of the ...

@powder I'm not "fine" with a loose definition of vaccine, I'm saying it doesn't matter what you call it so the definition is irrelevant. There are plenty of people who got covid twice, so you thinking you had a "robust enough" reaction means fuck all. As for masks, hygiene, and distancing, you dumb fuckin' anti-vaxxers wouldn't even do that when it was asked of you, so you don't get to claim that's a possible solution now. You and the rest of the anti-vaxxers are dumb fucking cunts and I hope you all get covid and die so you can't cause problems like this next pandemic.

@powder Whether or not you want to or technically can call it a vaccine is irrelevant. The facts are these: -the shot reduces the likelihood that one will have severe symptoms - the shot reduces how sick you get if you even get infected, thus, it likely reduces the viral load you shed thereby reducing how sick people get that catch it from you - the people that can get vaccinated and don't are making it way worse for those that can't but want to which shows what selfish cunts those people are - all anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers are dirty stupid cunts, not necessarily everyone that is unvaccinated - it is sad when someone who is doing everything they can to protect themselves and others dies, but luckily over 97% of those needing hospitalization are unvaccinated and an even higher percentage of those dying are unvaccinated - I will always cheer on the death of dirty stupid cunts

@powder Claiming you want no one to die while being an anti-vaxxer is like claiming you want to protect children while donating money to the Catholic archdiocese who use funds to allow pedophile priests escape prosecution. Actions speak louder than words and your actions say you want a lot of people to die of covid and more to die of the next pandemic disease.

@powder If you think wanting someone dead for an arbitrary reason like heritage or skin color is the same thing as wanting people to die for the very specific non-arbitrary reason that their idiocy is going to exacerbate death for many more people in the future then you have such poor reasoning skills I couldn't possibly help you.

@powder People also believe that people with darker skin are inferior. Should we be fine with that belief? People believe Jews should be gassed to death. That something we should just be fine with as an equally valid but different opinion? As for vaccines, should we let children go unvaccinated for measles and polio because their parents believe the vaccines are less effective than herd immunity or large amounts of organic vegetables in the diet? Beliefs are not equal to facts. As for mandating the vaccine, I'm fine with it being personal choice now that the data is showing 97+% of people dying are anti-vaxxers. Let them all die now so they won't be as harmful to society at large when the next pandemic starts.
How?

Happiness is internal, it's not dependent on others or the world. It's inside you and what you choose to feel. @K9Kohle789 You are confusing fate and determinism. "Prearranged by the cosmos" implies a creator or plan or desired outcome, some type of metaphysical properties for which there is no evidence whatsoever. What I'm actually saying is that everything is a result of a casual chain. If you're not willing to do a lot of research or watch hours of content on YouTube, there are a couple low- time- investment things that may help you to at least understand where people like me are coming from so you don't dismiss it like nonsense right away. (I dismiss fate-based things as nonsense all the time. That is not what determinism is.) Here's a quick video that may help: https://youtu.be/vCGtkDzELAI Here's a short essay on path dependence and free will: https://medium.com/@ryanshmeizer/a-puppet-is-free-as-long-as-it-loves-its-strings-e588c1f91314
