The one on the right looks fun. The left one has WAY too many windows.
ChestRockfield replies on Jun 14, 2021:
@Holysocks For me it's mostly about the practicality. I spent $5600 on 5 large windows that'll probably only last like 10 years or so before they start really losing their efficiency. They make your house harder to heat and cool, they make it easier for people to steal your Magic the Gathering collection (or whatever valuables you have in your house). I also don't care what the outside looks like cause I'm not looking at it. I'd rather save as much money on that kind of stuff I could go sink it all into a gorgeous kitchen and a theater room, game room, bar, baller patio, etc.

ChestRockfield replies on Jun 13, 2021:
@AnneWimsey What's hard to understand is that these rules you're citing (which I couldn't find in writing on their website by the way) are arbitrary and stupid. That seems like a distinction without a difference to me. To claim that simply because she didn't get paid for her recording means the group that sets the rules and gives out the prizes can't make an adjustment to their own arbitrary rules. So if one organization offered her $1 to use her footage (which I don't know she * didn't * get paid at all) that would make all the difference and classify her as a freelancer? Give me a break. Also, are you telling me that freelancers aren't freelancers unless they've been paid? Is that one payment good forever? Or does it only last for a month? A year? Furthermore, she kind of did get paid if you ask me. She's made $709,000 as a direct result of her recording.
LOL, that really worked.

In the US, reduced rate junk mail is a subsidy to capitalism; it’s paid by unwilling postal users or unwilling taxpayers.
ChestRockfield replies on Jun 13, 2021:
@yvilletom By that definition, everything, everywhere, is subsidized at all times. A store's electricity is subsidized because they include their overhead in their prices. Employees' bathroom breaks are subsidized because staffing is worked into the budget and effects pricing. I think two out of the billion possible examples is enough. But that's not what subsidy means. Public money (generally taxes) are used to aid a private entity because their sales/highest possible profit margin aren't enough to keep them in business. Me personally going to a business and buying something isn't a subsidy.

I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to say, but it is estimated that a third of USPS' profits and over half of the pieces of mail being sent are 'junk mail'. Tax payers aren't paying to get junk mail, businesses are paying to send it to you at a high enough rate that the USPS generates tens of billions of dollars of revenue from it annually.

ChestRockfield replies on Jun 12, 2021:
@AmyTheBruce Found this. It's more or less what I assumed. Could be bullshit, but it rings true to me. Chad Wallace who claims to work at U.S. Postal Service said, "Postal carriers don't use the term, 'Junk mail', we call non first class, no request to be forwarded mail 'bulk business mail'. Carriers are mandated to deliver any letter/parcel with a clear designation and paid postage. Anything from 'free' political mail to expensive heavy parcels. If we delay, throw away, and/or destroy mail we can receive discipline anything from getting written up including removal and/or arrest. The problem lies in some companies send important correspondence via bulk mail either to save money or to trick thieves who steal first class mail. Also, newer carriers may not know all the differences between the different classes of mail. Let's say your carrier doesn't deliver 'junk mail' at your request, what if something important doesn't get delivered? You report it, the Post office does and investigation, the carrier admits to not delivering some mail…he's probably fired. If you personally know your carrier and you two have an understanding about what's 'junk' they might do it but they might ask you to give a written letter to the Post Master asking if he can. But * you * have more control over what gets mailed to you. Look for a website or number on the mail and contact them and ask to get off the mailing list. Or…………just recycle it." The reason I think this is all accurate is because I happened to be in the Post Office one day while someone was working out the bulk delivery fee for a giant box of post cards promoting her upcoming event. Seems awful to me that someone could pay them hundreds or even thousands of dollars to deliver advertising to a ton of people only to have them all just tossed in the trash for being bulk. That would be like a vendor selling you a $7 Bud Light and then knocking it out of your hand because no 'one should drink a beer that shitty'. 😝

@AnneWimsey How about Guinea worm disease? "This disease is a parasitic infection caused by a type of roundworm and typically begins when you drink stagnant water contaminated with its larvae. One year after infection, painful blisters will form on arms and legs, before bursting to expose a small worm. The worm can survive in subcutaneous tissue for years and can only be removed by winding it laboriously around a stick and withdrawing it bit by bit each day. It is, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), rarely fatal, though sickness does linger for months to years, often leaving patients bed-ridden." Then maybe a nice bout of pancreatic cancer to finish him off.

@RichieO Throughout human history there were millions of things that up until they were found, no one had ever seen. That is not good reasoning, and surely isn't logically sound. (You have committed the informal logical fallacy of Argument from Ignorance). Furthermore, it sounds to me as if we have incompatible definitions of the words 'agnostic' and 'atheist' as do so many pairs of people on this website. To me, and many others, atheism deals with what one believes while agnosticism deals with what one can know. I'm an atheist because I have no belief that a god exists, but I'm agnostic because I know I can't know. A few months ago I would have similarly been the equivalent of atheistic and agnostic with respect to the pistol shrimp if someone would have explained it to me. I have since learned that something I absolutely wouldn't have believe existed if told to me by a source I didn't trust actually does exist, my initial stances on such a being were not life shattering for me as I had recognized it was possible and merely had to say, "Huh, that's pretty crazy" not "How could something I knew for a fact be wrong!!!!" So while the absence of evidence for unicorns and leprechauns continues and strengthens my belief they don't exist, I would never say that lack of evidence * proves * they don't exist.
For fuck sake.

@BDair You just don't know what you're talking about is all, and you're getting bad evidence from people who are either stupid, deliberately trying to twist information to suit them, or both. On July 2, 2020, the governor of Kansas issued an executive order (state mandate), effective July 3, requiring masks or other face coverings in public spaces. CDC and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment analyzed trends in county-level COVID-19 incidence before (June 1–July 2) and after (July 3–August 23) the governor’s executive order among counties that ultimately had a mask mandate in place and those that did not. As of August 11, 24 of Kansas’s 105 counties did not opt out of the state mandate§ or adopted their own mask mandate shortly before or after the state mandate was issued; 81 counties opted out of the state mandate, as permit￾ted by state law, and did not adopt their own mask mandate. After the governor’s executive order, COVID-19 incidence (calculated as the 7-day rolling average number of new daily cases per 100,000 population) decreased (mean decrease of 0.08 cases per 100,000 per day; net decrease of 6%) among counties with a mask mandate (mandated counties) but continued to increase (mean increase of 0.11 cases per 100,000 per day; net increase of 100%) among counties without a mask mandate (nonmandated counties). In the middle of his question I interjected, "Bro, I can tell you now you're asking the wrong guy, but go on." After his question, I had to explain that there's a zero percent chance I'd do something that would put me on death row then fail to kill myself before the arrest, before the trial or conviction, or before being sentenced to death and having to spend time in prison. Staring down the barrel of prison time would give me more than what I needed.

@Tejas You're the one that said "At least you know what you're getting" not me. If refraining from voting did anything you'd have a point, but it doesn't. Candidates only need one more vote to win, which means 1 to nothing is just as good as 75 million / + 1. Since they will vote for themselves, and they probably want everyone to be apathetic and refrain from voting anyway, all you're doing by sitting home is hurting the candidate that most closely aligns with your beliefs (i.e. the candidate you would have voted for if you voted "lesser of two evils" as you say). So your method literally is getting you the worst possibly outcome. I used to be more idealistic like you, but I realized I was just hurting myself demanding my idea of perfection.

I've been on here for years and have only heard of one couple that resulted from this. It's actually * less * likely to result in dates than any other social media platform because others often propose friendships based on more conducive parameters for meeting/dating/sex like proximity, common friends, clubs, etc. Here we're spread out all over the world and only have one thing in common (and as soon as you ask their definition of agnostic, maybe not even that). A friend of mine and I were toying with the idea of a dating site for depressed suicidal people, but I'm thinking there may be too much liability. It would probably be a better resource than this though (statistically, it would have to be). @AnneWimsey

What I was kind of leaning toward was an analogy to my thoughts on sandwiches: 'You can have a bad sandwich with good bread, but you absolutely cannot have a good sandwich with bad bread.' You can be bad for a child you do want, but how good can you really be for a child you didn't and still don't want?

@racocn8 I know you said you don't agree with the tactic, but couldn't the compensation for oppression of women come from taxes instead of individual men? Compensation for the history of oppression of African Americans doesn't come from individual white people. I think it would be much more efficient if there were standard compensation rates instead of millions of court battles over custody and child support. No argument from me; people are stupid. Not sure what that has to do with a better, fairer solution. What if the women who need funds who slept with a guy who subsequently died or lost his job/makes almost nothing? Those kids are less deserving of stuff they need? So if you don't agree that women should be having babies to get financial support, why don't you endorse the idea that men can opt out of providing it? Wouldn't that singularly eliminate any women doing such a thing? Wouldn't that promote only mentally healthy women who want a child because actually * want * the child instead of any other (non-healthy) reason? You talk of ideals, and I can't imagine one condition that better aligns itself with the ideal than a parent who is having a child because they truly desire being a mother.

@Paracosm The question posed to those two women says nothing about consensual sex, it simply asks, "If we give women the right to opt out of motherhood, should we give men the option to opt out of fatherhood and 18 years of child support?" There's no bait and switch. Women get the right for ANY reason. Should men be afforded that same right? And no, I'm not saying women are unfairly taking advantage. If a man wants to be a part of raising the child he absolutely should share in the financial responsibility. I'm simply asking if men should be afforded the same right as women, the ability to opt out of rights and responsibilities for any reason.

Well, I'll have to fight a little on the 'did so early' part. What if they were not made aware? What if circumstances changed significantly where the woman could still opt out. Why couldn't the man still be able to opt out? What is 'early'? That aside, I agree that all black people should have easy, fair access to voting, but just because they don't doesn't mean I don't also think or wouldn't support Native Americans having easy, fair access to voting. I'll always support women being able to abort, and I fully support free reproductive care/hygiene for women, furthermore, I never vote for anyone who is against these things, thus * I'm * not the one putting in roadblocks, nor is it even men in general. There are TONS of evangelical or otherwise religious women that support taking away all women's right to choose, so why should men specifically and indiscriminately be punished for this?

@racocn8 I don't know what the "need" for efficiency is here, or why you think preventing men from opting out and potentially increasing the number and frequency of court battles over custody and child support is more efficient. There are plenty of conditions that more closely resemble what we think is ideal. But what you've done here is create a straw man argument. You've replaced 'forced cold support' with 'being raised by two patients' and then concluded that is the better option. Furthermore, I submit that that is not necessarily better, especially when one of those parents doesn't want the child and prefers it be aborted or adopted out. And if it's all about closely approximating ideal, and we agree two parents is ideal, should single women be barred from using sperm banks? Seems like there are some holes in this argument... Are people dumb and selfish? Yes. Do we have a million problems? Yes. Not sure how any of that or the rest of your last paragraph invalidates the notion that men should be afforded the same opportunity to 'opt out' that women have.

@Paracosm That is absolutely included in the realm of what I asked. If you read the comments, you'll see that the basis for this is that judges have consistently ruled that it doesn't matter * how * a sperm impregnates a woman, the man is responsible. What part of, "Should a man be allowed to relinquish all rights to absolve all responsibility for a child?" suggests I'm excluding rape and other such circumstances?

I tend to think that "quota students" may not necessarily be unqualified because of the inherent bias that exists in even the testing of intelligence and knowledge.
