@DangerDave I don't think this will be fruitful. You have to have a common language and agree upon base assumptions to be able to have a conversation or debate worth anything. Claiming "a square has 4 90° angles and 4 equal sides" may not hold true for reasons X, Y, Z is pure nonsense. The qualities you gave are literally the definition of the thing; if those parameters don't hold true you're taking about a new/changed object, not a failure of the definition.

@StarvingArtist Personally I don't believe we should have the option to block. Either someone is behaving against guidelines and should be banned so no one has to deal with them (including an IP ban) or they're not. Blocking allows people to continue to say whatever they want about you or your argument without you being able to see or respond. I just don't think that's right.

Good point. If it is unknown, then you can not know it properties, including if it is unknowable. For if you know it is unknowable then you know something about it. Wonderfully silly.
ChestRockfield replies on Dec 23, 2020:
@Fernapple I was thinking about 'knowing the temperature outside'. You can know things * about * the temperature, but that doesn't mean you * know * the temperature. I think about the unknowable kinda the same way. Knowing it is unknowable is not the essence of 'knowing it', thus, it doesn't invalidate the unknowableness of it.
I’ve seen quite a few posts on here where something is deemed to be “unknowable”.

ChestRockfield replies on Dec 23, 2020:
@Fernapple I don't think my point is coming across. There is a paradox in your original statement. If you know something is unknowable, then you know something about it. If you know something about it, then it's not unknowable. Except the thing you supposed you knew was that it was unknowable, but since you are saying that was wrong then you didn't actually know it, and it's possible it is unknowable, but then... This is why I asked what constitutes 'knowledge of' something. Does knowing even a single thing about something constitute knowledge of it? Your answer started with, "No, but" which I didn't really notice at first and do not understand. It brings us back to the paradox again. "I think therefore I am" I thought supposedly addresses existence, not knowledge. I wondering, knowing what we know now, if it even addresses that.
I’ve seen quite a few posts on here where something is deemed to be “unknowable”.

@Freedompath I'm not telling you you're wrong. For me, personally, I think he's a pile of trash. Maybe voting against equal pay for women isn't that bad. @Freedompath Sorry, voting your beliefs can only excuse so much. If someone believed white people were better than all others, would that excuse voting for/with a white supremacist? If someone believed women are inferior to men, would that excuse them voting against equal rights legislation? That pile of shit voted with Trump 83% of the time. Is it really plausible that only 17% of the shit Trump supported was awful and 83% was just good conservative values. I'd say I wouldn't buy it, but I don't need to: I've seen enough in his voting record.

The few times I use it anymore, I have to spend extra time explaining that I wasn't misusing it and that I actually meant literally. How dumb is that?

ChestRockfield replies on Dec 21, 2020:
@Flowerwall No, you putting all the blame on the Dems means you assume it's their responsibility. The fact that you can say that so blithly goes to show that the Dems have been the party concerned with caring for the citizens, just like if someone said, "the party that cares about corporations" everyone would assume they meant the Republicans. That, alone, gives me reason to say they are scum. Yes language evolves, but it's supposed to be new words for new things (like the word 'internet' was) or new uses for words (like 'gay' meant happy then homosexual). Adding in definitions for 'irregardless' or 'literally' (to mean the exact opposite of literally) is a necessary evil because people are stupid.

@Ian_Newton I understand the time issue, but it seems like sacrificing valuable data like this would mostly invalidate any conclusions one could draw. If readers could easily poke holes in those conclusions and disregard entirely, wouldn't that be the waste of time? If you read a study that collected vague enough data to draw a conclusion that prayers cure cancer, wouldn't your thoughts be about how the study was flawed instead of praying for people you know that have cancer? "Maybe more people become Catholic in Ireland after D.A.D exerienc(es)." But you won't really know that because of the way the questions are asked. I don't recall the exact questions, but does the survey ask about religiosity prior to DAD events? But this is also why I would be interested in the religious affiliation of * both * parents. A vast majority of people are of the religion or non-religion of one or both of their parents. An religious or atheistic mother, regardless of a father's involvement or DAD issue, may influence a child to leave or join a religion. If for instance a high percentage of children that have at least one atheistic parent become atheist themselves, wouldn't you want to try to eliminate that from the equation? What if you happen to survey a higher than normal percentage of atheists, many of whom have atheist parents who raised them without religion, say by posting the link to the survey on an atheist website? Not trying to argue, just trying to help. If I start to annoy you, just ignore me.

And it contained some conservative priorities that Democrats dismissed as unacceptable “poison pills,” including liability protections for businesses and a tax credit aimed at helping students attend private schools."

Thing is, unless you're writing in a candidate, * all * candidates on the ballot are picked for us. He claimed I wasn't progressive of I didn't strictly vote my ideals. But if EVERYONE did that, there would be hundreds of thousands if not millions of different people with votes. To consolidate votes, voters necessarily must make concessions. That's something they simply have no ability to grasp. Duverger's Law has held true in American politics for hundreds of years, and it's not going to change now. If you want your candidate in one of the only two slots that can possibly win, you need to show up during the primary. I mean, by protest voting in generals, they're going to end up with something further from what they want than the moderate Dems they vilify will. I just don't understand any of it.

If they really had as many people supporting their cause as they do, they should show up in the primaries and get their pick as a major party nominee for the general. I'm extremely in favor of all progressive policies except one: throw away or protest vote no matter what will happen as a result. They claim I'm not progressive because I'm voting for the lesser of two evils, I ask how progressive it is to vote for someone who won't win increasing the odds that someone who wants to take away healthcare from millions of people will. That said, some members of Q seem to be starting to go down that path. Instead of looking past what minor differences you have, you have to create more infighting in an already politically weak electorate. @William_Mary When did * I * attack * you * ?! Over the course of this thread alone in your collective comments you called me an ignorant, egotistical bully that betrays his own ideals and is a waste of time, plus made other disparaging remarks about me. I never attacked you like that. I've simply been posting my point of view, not even an argument really, because I'm on your side. I think we only differ on what to do when there isn't a progressive enough candidate in a major party to vote for. I even tried to help with what I thought was a really good suggestion and you both basically told me to pound salt. The reason I thought it was a good idea is because I don't want to sign up for normal updates and info; I'm already fully sold on the progressive movement, and the only reason I don't vote for them currently is because I have no assurance it isn't a wasted vote. If there was a database that was ONLY used when there was enough people in a particular race I could vote in that would vote with me for the progressive, that would give me the push I needed to vote 3rd party. But what do you guys do? Attack me again, and I don't need that. I do want you to be successful, though, which is why I've continued to respond.

We are looking as massive food and housing shortages. There will be huge upticks in vector diseases because of increased breeding seasons and locations, a lot of which will go improperly diagnosed because it will be occurring in locations where the medical professionals are not used to seeing it. And this is all aside from the very real possibility of authoritarian rule in the US, Civil War 2, and World War 3. I wish I had your optimism. The physical and chemical composition of our brains coupled with the entirety of our human experience is essentially a sort of black box, an algorithm that determines what we think, believe, and do. By extension, I also realize that how racist people are isn't really their fault. They were simply unlucky in one or more aspects of their development. But just because it wasn't really their fault doesn't mean society doesn't need to protect itself from them. And sometimes, you just don't have the time to try to build that many roads that slowly. We didn't build roads for the Nazis. We didn't try to beat anything into them either. We just killed them. Because they were Nazis.

@Freedompath I wouldn't say I'm enraged, I'm just saying there was a time that a majority of the world agreed that the ideals of Nazism were so terrible for mankind that we traveled the globe to murder the fuck out of as many of them as we could, to try to eradicate it from the planet. That was a better time for humans. We knew right from wrong and we weren't afraid to fight for it. Now we're cool with self-described Nazis literally marching the streets of America. If there were another country more powerful than us, I would fully expect them to invade this country to kill the Nazi uprising and remove from power their leader to try to spread democracy here (that's what we'd do). The fact that there isn't a more powerful country is a huge problem for our future if we keep with our current trajectory. And not for nothing, but hating a group of people because they are evil racist piles of shit is not the same as hating people for an arbitrary characteristic like their race or orientation. I hear that argument all the time and it's so tiring. They say, "Intolerance is intolerance; you're just as bad as them." It's just not so. Can we not agree that it is the right thing to do to be intolerant of, say, child molestation? Thus, the qualifier for the intolerance makes all the difference. Not all intolerance is created equal, so to speak. Sorry for all that, it's not you it's just a pet peeve of mine. [/rant]

I was thinking about the problem of how to get everyone to go third party at the same time so that the first people that do it won't be discouraged when it doesn't work and then fail to do it again. There needs to be database that gets contact info that will ONLY be used to alert the progressive voters in a race that they have reached a critical mass. So people can continue to vote pragmatically until they get the notification that there are enough people that have agreed to vote progressive that they'd win. Even as the list grows it may force candidates to the left, so it's not even a waste as you're building up steam. What do you think? See, not really a negative Nancy after all.

Though Flynn's pardon isn't as broad as Nixon's was, he uses the phrase, "for any and all possible offenses arising from..." three times. Trump ain't skurred of no civil case. Oh, and that wouldn't have affected Trump? How much would people have believed Trump's promise to "drain the swamp" if they knew he was going to instill billionaires to head departments in charge of policing and regulating industries they used to work in?

@Piece2YourPuzzle 1. It's hard for me to take seriously an author that thinks Britain disproves Duverger's Law considering they have proportional representation, a key component of why the Law doesn't work there, as stated in your third link, "whereas proportional representation would have the opposite effect". 2. Your second article doesn't say what you think it says. Immediately after the abstract the author states, "I show that the contemporary evidence tends to disconfirm Duverger’s law but I argue that the basic intuition behind the law is valid." 3. I don't see anything in the wiki page that discounts Duverger's Law either. What exactly are you trying to say with those links? Most importantly, even if you think the law is a "dead parrot" it's been working as if true for hundreds of years in the US. You need people to believe their third party vote isn't a wasted vote, so getting them to believe Duverger's Law isn't real, regardless of whether or not it is, is * your * cross to bear. And citing websites that don't support your goal doesn't seem very beneficial.

@Piece2YourPuzzle 1. Like I said, I don't need to convince people like me of anything, you do, so you can call me what you like. 2. That long post wasn't to you, and though possibly verbose, was essentially only an answer to one thing. If you don't care to ask or answer, I'm fine with that. 3. I'm not ignoring their role, I'm simply choosing the lesser of two evils because I don't want the worse candidate to win. There's no cognitive dissonance there, just pragmatism. I don't know how you can say my actions don't match my beliefs. My belief is that Donald Trump is so terrible he would end our democracy if given another 4 years (if it isn't already over). I believe that based on hundreds of years of Duverger's Law holding true, one of only two candidates can possibly win in the general, thus I will vote for one of the two. Since I believe I only have two choices and no one has demonstrated otherwise, I will always vote for the better option. I voted for Biden. All of those beliefs and actions are perfectly consistent with each other. And we're ALL essentially picking someone who was picked for us, unless you're writing your candidate in... 4. Are you suggesting that 2016 Trump voters realized he was terrible after he got into office, but then a vast majority of them, plus 11 million more voted for him in 2020?

@barjoe Fucked up part, who didn't see this coming? This is exactly what you'd expect from a country that will be under authoritarian rule in the next couple decades.

ChestRockfield replies on Dec 13, 2020:
@think-beyond If the implication is that I should be positive and foster open communication with the OP you wouldn't be the first one to say that. You also wouldn't be the first one who doesn't know that I already tried and it lead to a fruitless conversation of pure nonsense. * You * can attempt for yourself if you want, or go back to his old posts and read for yourself if it's still there.

@think-beyond I read several actual passages from that book that didn't make sense. Can you tell me the reason for the suggestion though?
