However, I read a synopsis of the points made in that book. I find some of them nice but others not generally supported by evidence. He also refers to "what nature wants" and a resultant karmic system which I unfortunately cannot square with my view of the nature of reality.

ChestRockfield replies on Dec 13, 2020:
@William_Mary Your accusations of me are irrelevant. If you want to think I'm two people or I betray my ideals, etc. that's fine. You don't need to like me. We don't need to be friends. I don't even need to be having this conversation. You can write me off right now and save me some time. I'm still going to be pragmatic and do what I do because no one has convinced me it's wrong yet. I tried to clearly explain what ideally I'd like, and what I'd be willing to do to get it. All of life, at least for me, is a cost-benefit analysis. I * want * universal healthcare and the like. I'd vote in the primary for the most progressive candidate I could. But in the general I'll only vote for the more progressive of the two major party candidates because I * know * Duverger's Law has accurately dictated for hundreds of years that third party candidates can't win in non-proportional-representation democracies with a first past the goal post winner. I really think my analogy about the security measures makes a lot of sense. It seems like you're trying to convince people everything would be better if no one had to use any security measures (which it would) and in light of that, people should be idealistic and stop locking their doors, otherwise they're just giving up and being part of the pessimistic system. The people you want to convince to stop locking their doors will all likely require different levels of evidence or proof that it's safe to do. Some are willing to sacrifice anything to work toward that goal, like you. Others need more assurance because they perceive they have more to lose from a loss than they have to gain from a win. Still others aren't concerned with what can be won or lost, but rather the likelihood of a win or loss. While people like me weigh a combination of these factors to determine the best course of action. None of these ways or picking who to vote for are objectively wrong, regardless of your personal preference. If you were attacking me for picking my candidate out of a hat, that would make perfect sense, but I'm not. I don't know why you're so insistent I'm wrong about my opinion. And as I stated before, if * this * is how progressives are treating people they're trying to convince to risk wasting their vote for a chance at something better, I have far less confidence they'll be able to get enough people on board, making it that much less likely I'll risk my vote.

ChestRockfield replies on Dec 13, 2020:
@Piece2YourPuzzle Honestly, I want to, but I'm responding to both of you and it's a lot. I'm not a typical Democrat. Like I said, I think I'm as liberal as they come, so what I'm giving up isn't the yard stick to measure by. Also, you're missing an important component pragmatic people weigh in. If I want thing X and I can either compromise to get 50% of X or lose and get thing Y which is the exact opposite of thing X, then you could consider that 50% is least 75% of what I want or more depending on how bad thing Y is. I won't respond to all of the points I see in a different way at this juncture. If you'd please list the specific questions you want me to answer and we can start from there instead of each trying to wade through all that was said.

@TomMcGiverin I'd say this is a classic chicken/chicken egg conundrum, but the chick/egg thing actually has an answer. I don't think it's fair to say that you'd have the votes * if * they'd trust you with the nominee, but that you won't simply take the nominee with all the votes you supposedly have. That's like a "Nigerian Prince" telling you he has 300 million dollars he wants to give you but he can't do it until you give him $3,000 first. Call it an excuse, call it a rationalization, call it whatever you want; I make my decisions based on facts. I'll vote for a progressive in the primary, and if they win, I'll vote for them in the general, but I will not throw away my vote on something hundreds of years of evidence tells me is impossible.

@Piece2YourPuzzle It would be nice if that were true, but it just isn't. For hundreds of years Duverger's Law has not failed to be true, so people * know * it will be a wasted vote that will elect the worse of the two [in some cases, the worse of the two evils]. I'm asking * how * you can make it happen instead of just restating an if/then statement. Sure, * if * everyone wrote in John Stamos on their ballot * then * he would become the next president. The question is * how * do you convince enough people that enough people are going to do it to get him the win * before * you actually know/can show you have the numbers? That's the Catch-22. Would it be nice if everyone voted their ideals? Absolutely. Would it be nice if no one stole anything so we could all spend the money we spend on security measures on other things. Yup. Those things are based on the same principle. People will take advantage of weaknesses they see in others because humans are innately selfish (or pragmatic if you prefer). While some people are voting their ideals others will sacrifice a little of what they want to guarantee the rest every election. The Republicans figured this out. Do you know that if 25% of the people who voted for Jill Stein in Wisconsin, 75% from Michigan, and 88% from Pennsylvania had realized they were throwing their vote away and voted for Clinton instead, we would have never had a President Trump. How much better would the environment be in if there was no Trump? How much better would everything be if Clinton had won? If you think all the bad shit that happened under Trump was worth it to vote your ideals, then I guess we're kind of at an impasse.

@RoboGraham In 2016 there were an estimated 157 million registered voters. 129 million voted. If the possibility of someone who very well * could * have been a major part nominee promising things that could improve their lives wasn't enough to motivate them to vote even though they were already registered, what data do you have to support your claim that they would suddenly care enough to vote for them if they made it to the general, but only then and not a minute earlier? I just don't see non-voters, registered or otherwise, caring enough about politics to follow it so they would know if they'd be willing to turn out to vote for someone saying something they liked, but not caring enough to try to make that person who says the stuff they like the nominee or vote on any other issues or against any candidate that says or does things they don't like. It just doesn't add up and I don't see anything but conjecture that says otherwise. And that still brings us back to the point I made earlier. If you can't get those mystery voters to turn out until the progressive candidate is a major party nominee, and you can't get pragmatic democrats/liberals to waste their votes on a third party to prove to the establishment that the third party candidates could carry the day and should be the "second party" candidate without knowing when those mystery voters will step up, where do you go? That's a catch-22 there's no out for. It would take cycle after cycle after cycle of losses trying to build up steam. And every loss, some of the people you convinced to sign on to the movement would leave and say it wasn't worth throwing their vote away the last X elections to try to get a new party to be one of the only two available parties the US is capable of having. I believe in the substance of what you want. Tell me the real-world way in which you think it can happen. I have a suspicion telling people they're blind, enslaved sheep isn't going to quite get us over the goal line.

Plus, you're not taking into account the percentage of people that are going to refuse the vaccine added to the approximate 30% fail rate of the estimated immunogenicity of 70%. Even if 10% refuse the vaccine, that leaves 37% of the population vulnerable post country-wide vaccination. If it gets close to 30% refusal you'll get to 50% of the population still being vulnerable. And this is all ignoring the possibility that the immunity from the vaccine may not last significantly longer than the immunity from recovering from the virus itself and/or that it doesn't mutate and become a yearly thing that kicks our asses.

I support free college, free health coverage, pro-choice, gay rights, climate change legislation, I even want to see profit-free government-run automobile insurance and zero-deduction taxes. Try to name a progressive policy I wouldn't support or a progressive candidate I wouldn't vote for. How progressive is someone, really, if they protest-vote someone into the White House that wants to * reduce * healthcare coverage, give billionaires * more * tax breaks, take money * away * from public schools, deport dreamers, privatize the post office, etc? It's crazy that we want the exact same things, yet just because of a difference in what we think are possible avenues to get there, we're fighting each other. It's not like I'm in the center and you're on the far left and we're splintering. This is how we lose so much. For the Republicans, all that matters is "( R )". Work on changing who gets the nod in the primaries. Work on all those people that don't vote at all to get to the polls at that time. That will show the party that they don't need to worry about the shifting electorate, because with that much new support on the far left, if it really does exist, the electorate wouldn't actually be shifting right. But don't wait until the general and then cause/almost cause a Republican win.

@TomMcGiverin This is exactly the problem: the fractured left. * I * understand Duverger's Law, so * I * know that I have two options: the candidate whose proposed policies are * closer * to mine, or the candidate whose are * further * from mine. 3rd party votes do nothing. Abstaining in protest does nothing. People on the right seem to understand this too. There were shady backroom dealings and shenanigans trying to prevent Trump from becoming the nominee. Yet as soon as he got the nomination they all got the fuck in line, supported him, and got him elected. Let's say the Dem party is hostile and useless to progressives. Are they * worse * than the Republican party? Would cycle after cycle of Republican leadership while the far left built up support for the notion that * their * candidates were one of the two viable parties, not whoever the Democrats put up, be worth it? And @RoboGraham, you really believe there are tens of millions of eligible, yet unregistered and/or non-practicing citizens so supportive of the progressive movement that they would register/vote for a progressive, but don't give a fuck about voting against conservative "values" or voting on ANY down-ballot initiatives? That just doesn't sound realistic at all. That also has to mean all those people you think can be motivated all recognize, just like me, that third party candidates CAN'T WIN because there * are * progressives on the ballot, especially in the primaries. So by your assessment, they're super eager to vote for a progressive, know a third party candidate can't win, would be easy to mobilize to the polls with the right candidate, but won't even vote in the primary to try to make that happen? That doesn't sound ridiculous to you? Please, bro.

Tens of millions of eligible voters can't even be bothered to pull a fuckin' lever, even in an election this big, so an informed electorate isn't a pipe dream, it's an impossibility. My problem with it is that it's conveniently at a time that is more accusatory of Biden, with the token inclusion of 'Trump did it too', even though Trump's cabinet picks were far more egregious. If the outcome was neutral, I wouldn't be fighting it. It isn't. This push is far more detrimental to the Dems, so, no thanks.

@altschmerz I agree with all that, but knowing that, you think people are going to suddenly care so much they're going not only start looking up stuff on candidates before the election but they're also going to research all of their cabinet picks too? Come on. Anyway, even if we did have access to that information and even if people did look it up, we are so polarized the results of that search likely wouldn't mean anything. I'm so convinced that another 4 of Trump would end our democracy (that is if the first 4 didn't do it) that there's practically no one Biden could pick for his cabinet pre-election that would have changed my vote. Furthermore, the pre-election cabinet picks can only hurt the Democrats. Republicans have shown all they care about is power, and we know they'll always line up to vote for the Republican, so their picks wouldn't hurt them, while the fractured left would take a hit for picks being not centrist enough or liberal enough.

I'd probably get some dates if I was forward and played the odds, but I just can't do it. It's not me. Instead I live a sad lonely existence hoping a women finds me somehow because all I can think about is how "over" women are of being hit on all the time. (e.g. "Uugh, can't I even go to the _____ without being hit on?")

@Word I don't want to get into the free will debate while we're already in the rabbit hole on this. You can research it on your own if you're really interested. You can also search old topics here and see how many people here also recognize free will is an illusion. To me, it is as readily apparent that free will does not exist as it is to you that god doesn't exist. Once this realization clicks for an individual, it's even more irreversible than a loss of a belief in god. (I know several people that have refound god, but none that started believing in free will again.) (Also, no one that isn't clinically insane believes in "free will to grow your hair color". The only thing I mean by free will is the latter example.)

ChestRockfield replies on Dec 7, 2020:
@Word 1. "People are still people" still assumes a premise I augured against in my last comment. It assumes that a human has intrinsic value that outweighs how big of a piece of shit they act like/think like. I disagree with this premise. 2. You're making my point for me. Hating people for arbitrary reasons they can't control is completely different than hating someone for something they theoretically (for the purposes of this argument) can. So I * wouldn't * hate someone for having Downs, that would be a super shitty, awful thing to do, but I * would * hate someone for hating someone with Downs because theoretically they * could * control it but do the shitty awful thing anyway. 3. Why is that an either/or? That's a fallacy of a false dichotomy. Would you rather eradicate a racist or would you rather eradicate racism? Both. Would genocide of racist eradicate racism? Genocide of all racists would... Why do you think racist, etc. are that way? Because they were taught it, obviously. "No one comes out of the womb saying, 'The Jews have all the money!'" -David Cross Point is, they're unlikely to change. And the few that do will easily be replaced by the procreation of the ones that don't. Not sure what that has to do with the discussion at hand though. If they care about me not hating them ( * they don't * ), they're free to stop doing the thing that makes them extra detestable as human beings.

@Word 1. Bias, hated, and discrimination only lives in people. There's not some magical discrimination entity we can attack and banish. What are people if they're not their decisions, beliefs, motivations, and actions? 2. You didn't address my claim that "love the sinner" isn't a valid premise. If that was a given AND we believed there were redeeming qualities for humans so great that they could outweigh them being super racist, then it'd be an argument I'd need to refute. I don't believe either of those things to be true, so I do not accept that "love the sinner, hate the sin" is a valid argument. 3. You didn't answer my question. Several years ago I had someone tell me a move (that I later saw detailed on a television show, so it must be a well known thing) they had a lot of success with. They claimed that if you got a lady back to your place it means she's already into you and has at least considered sex. They claimed that given those circumstances, if you just pull it out there's a very high success rate of her doing something with it. Again, people do things that work. @AnneWimsey My link was specifically responding to the part of your comment where you imply assault can't be charged unless you are infected.
A Satisfying moment in Walmart.

@AnneWimsey I don't think that's true... "Man Arrested For Coughing In Police Officer’s Face" https://www.marylandlawhelp.com/man-arrested-for-coughing-in-police-officers-face/
Surprise! Surprise!! Face mask wearing increased to 77%; however, that was not enough to off set ...
Willow_Wisp comments on Dec 2, 2020:
I wouldn’t jump to that conclusion. I shouldn’t have to say more than one word, “Sweden” Nor White House party’s and political rallies. Conservatives carry diseases.
ChestRockfield replies on Dec 2, 2020:
@Rodatheist You have absolutely nothing to support that conclusion. First of all, social distancing is no where near as good as masks. They've known since March that this is airborne. They found it in the ventilation systems in hospitals and they know that it can linger in the air FOR HOURS. People being 6' apart in a room an hour ago doesn't help you if you walk in after they're gone. Secondly, people that are forced to be near each other in risky situations (nurses like me who work in interventional pulmonology with Covid positive patients) rarely get Covid with proper mask wearing. Literally only one nurse on my unit got it, and she got it in a party destination while on vacation. That is anecdotal, obviously, but you don't even have anecdotal evidence to support your claim. Third, the director of the CDC clearly stated under oath that he believes the single best defense against Covid is masks, not a vaccine, not social distancing, masks.

You should prove them all wrong by hanging out in an ICU without a mask.
ChestRockfield replies on Dec 2, 2020:
@Rodatheist I read that, dude, but that doesn't mean the increased mask wearing can outperform the increased transmission rates from when people * aren't * wearing masks (and performing other counter-productive behaviors), which in no way means masks don't work. Are you seriously not able to understand that? It's a very simple concept.

ChestRockfield replies on Dec 2, 2020:
@Rodatheist Really? Your bio talks about those that, "base their beliefs and opinions on reason, sound knowledge" yet you draw that ridiculous conclusion from those statistics? There is no control, and no specific data that proves what you're asserting. Even if mask wearing is up overall, * when * masks aren't worn (like during the reduction of social distancing- notice the article specifically mentions activities that require the removal of masks like bars, restaurants, places of worship which weren't requiring masks, work where people have lunch breaks in lunch rooms together without masks, gyms where people are breathing super heavy which naturally reduces efficacy of masks, if they were even required, plus rampant sharing of equipment) is the important part that can account for those numbers that doesn't mean masks don't work. It's kind of like wearing a condom 23 hours a day but taking it off to have sex and then saying condoms do nothing to prevent STIs. If you're going to talk about reason and sound knowledge, you should be better at recognizing and applying it.

@Rodatheist Well, I believe you are spreading dangerous misinformation. Please show me these numbers that prove you're right.
I hope Trump pardons himself instead of stepping down and having Pence do it.
Sticks48 comments on Dec 2, 2020:
Me too. How do you pardon someone for a crime they haven't even been charged with? Does that include any future crime they might be charged with?
ChestRockfield replies on Dec 2, 2020:
@OldMetalHead @Sticks48 Don't get my wrong, there's no about of terrible shit that could happen to that man I wouldn't enjoy, but it's never going to happen. Also, not for nothing, election officials have had to go into hiding due to death threats just for counting ballots. What do you think would happen to the DA that was trying to put/successfully put Trump in prison?
Sounds just like her lmao
ChestRockfield comments on Dec 2, 2020:
She's the most bullied person on the internet, you guys... And it's not like she ever did anything to deserve it. I mean, it's almost as if people treat her as though she's complicit in every awful fucking thing Donald Trump did for the last 16 years.
ChestRockfield replies on Dec 2, 2020:
@amymcmxcii How does holding someone accountable for their behavior make me a misogynist creep? I would say the same thing about a man that was as awful as her which means I'm not sexist, no?
