This morning I am grateful that the sun, moon, stars alligned to allow evolution.
Coffeo comments on Apr 17, 2018:
The sun has been vital, of course. I don't think the (other) stars had anything at all to do with evolution, but the moon's role in stabilising the Earth's axial tilt might have helped somewhat.

I never watch the ads. My TV has a mute button and I have a crossword.

Does it annoy you when you realise you posted something with misspellings or the wrong word?
Coffeo comments on Apr 13, 2018:
Yes it does. Like @AMGT if I notice it, I fix it.
Married to a Christian.
Coffeo comments on Apr 13, 2018:
In some cases. My wife and I have just celebrated our 40th anniversary. She describes herself as a Christian (specifically Anglican), and wants a religious funeral service in the event that she pre-deceases me. But she is no longer a church-goer and can't stand fundamentalists any more than I can, so she's a pretty easy sort of Christian to get along with. A while back she wanted to find a particular psalm, but had to go online because she couldn't find the bible. (I found it later.) Some Christians are OK. :)
What do you know about Crypto currency?
Coffeo comments on Apr 12, 2018:
One thing that bothers me a lot about this cryptocurrency thing is the huge amount of energy needed to mine it and to maintain blockchains, all of which is essentially wasted as heat, and will soon be (if it isn't already) a significant contributor to global warming.
Are Atheist hateful towards spiritual people?
Coffeo comments on Apr 12, 2018:
A lot of religious people feel justified in bashing atheists, too.
I'm having anxiety about going back to Missouri to visit my southern baptist Uber conservative hell ...
Coffeo comments on Apr 12, 2018:
My suggestion (as someone who has never faced this situation and whose advice might therefore be somewhat suspect), is to talk normally about everyday matters but as soon as religion comes up, be completely silent. (Might take some will-power, especially if they ask direct questions.)

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and am some what of an imbecile when it comes to biology.
Coffeo comments on Apr 12, 2018:
I'm not a biologist either, so much of it is beyond me. But it makes me wonder if other advanced species (primates, other mammals) also have a high proportion of microbial DNA, and whether they (and we) could even have evolved without it.

A cosmology question.
Coffeo comments on Apr 10, 2018:
I think we would see both the Andromeda galaxy and the Milky Way at roughly equal brightness, and the Magellanic Clouds also. Without instruments, we would see very little else. Furthermore, there are some enormous voids among the galaxies. If we were in one of these voids without instruments, I don't think we would see a damn thing. We would see neither stars nor galaxies — the sky would be utterly black.
Men, do you agree with this quote from Christopher Hitchens?
Coffeo comments on Apr 7, 2018:
It may be true of a lot of men, but I think there are probably so many exceptions that this has to be considered a massive over-generalization. I count myself among the exceptions.
Problems NOT a result of religion
Coffeo comments on Apr 6, 2018:
I think there are plenty that are not _directly_ caused by religion; not nearly so many in which religion plays no part.
No problem.

It is also important to recognize the point at which your masterpiece is complete, and further editing will ruin it.

How do Believers become Non-Believers
Coffeo comments on Apr 4, 2018:
Finding out about science helped enormously. Also finding most aspects of religion unutterably boring (good quality music excepted).
I’m guessing everyone on here knows this very fine bit of Monty Python [youtu.be]
Coffeo comments on Apr 4, 2018:
I think _Galaxy Song_ and _Every Sperm is Sacred_ are the best bits of that movie by far, but Mr Creosote is just disgusting. Overall, I like _Life of Brian_ better.

Coffeo comments on Apr 3, 2018:
I suppose, if a waiver can't be obtained, maybe a $50 fine might be understandable. Ten years in jail seems harsh.
What made you stay here?
Coffeo comments on Apr 3, 2018:
I've spent most of my life in the company of people who basically didn't give a damn what my religious beliefs were (mother and aged relatives excepted). Coming here to see how many folk seem totally oppressed by immersion among Christians has been a real eye-opener. But I think I stayed mainly for the interesting conversations about philosophy, science and family.
Easter holiday
Coffeo comments on Apr 3, 2018:
Stayed home Easter Sunday, but visited son, daughter-in-law and new granddaughter the day before. But that really had nothing to do with it being Easter.

My baseline for human acceptability is just don't kill or rape people.
Coffeo comments on Apr 3, 2018:
I think it is possible to do considerable harm to people without killing or raping them.
Hmmm....
Coffeo comments on Apr 3, 2018:
Vonnegut was right about so much. I was powerfully affected by his novel _Slaughterhouse Five_, and by some of the essays in his collection _Wampeters, Foma and Granfalloons_. Two of the essays in particular, _Biafra: a People Betrayed_ (about British and Russian genocide in Nigeria), and _Address to Graduating Class at Bennington College, 1970_ are particularly powerful. WARNING: do not read these if you want to be cheered up.

Do Atheiests/Agnostics Celebrate Easter?
Coffeo comments on Mar 31, 2018:
Nothing special. I had an extra hour this morning with the end of daylight saving and I was hoping to put it to good use but it disappeared.
Art & Culture in a truly agnostic or atheist society?
Coffeo comments on Mar 31, 2018:
While it would be wonderful to live in a world free of religion, we must never destroy our history. Imagine taking a wrecking ball to the Rose Window at Chartres Cathedral, or the soaring spire at Salisbury. Imagine smashing Michelangelo's Pietà (though someone tried) or the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Imagine never hearing again Bach's St John Passion or Fauré's Requiem. You don't have to be a believer to cherish these things. They will not last forever, but we must keep them as long as we can.
Anyone can parent.
Coffeo comments on Mar 30, 2018:
Lovely!
Just got asked what atheists do on Easter.
Coffeo comments on Mar 30, 2018:
We get an extra hour on Easter Sunday because daylight saving is ending here. Haven't decided yet how to use it. Read the paper? Piano practice? Work in the garden?

Watched "The 5th Element" again recently.
Coffeo comments on Mar 29, 2018:
That is one of the _very_ few movies that I'm happy to watch more than twice (and there aren't that many that I'd watch twice).

Coffeo comments on Mar 29, 2018:
Hello and welcome!
What is something your parents told you as a kid that you realized later it was an outright lie?
Coffeo comments on Mar 29, 2018:
Just Santa. Everything else they told me, even if wrong, was something they believed, so not a lie.

Bathing
Coffeo comments on Mar 26, 2018:
When I was little, we only had a bath tub. Well, there was a shower over it, but it didn't work properly. So when I eventually moved to a place with a shower that worked (49 years ago), I used it all the time. The number of baths I've had since then would be barely into double figures.
I used to think that "fools"day comes every first April before Easter, now its going to be same day ...
Coffeo comments on Mar 26, 2018:
It's the date of Easter that shifts around. The calculations are arcane. Easter is on Aprl 1 this year, again in 2029, and again in 2040. After that it won't happen again for 68 years.
Are you more a cat or dog lover?
Coffeo comments on Mar 26, 2018:
I've known a few lovely dogs, but basically I'm a cat person.
What cats and dogs understand.
Coffeo comments on Mar 26, 2018:
Our two cats communicate with us a lot. We don't always understand them, though we often do. We talk to them a lot. They understand heaps.
To believe or not to believe. That is the Question...,...,.. ugh.... think I have that wrong.
Coffeo comments on Mar 25, 2018:
Well it is _a_ question. Isn't it what you wanted to ask?
For the men on site. Agree or disagree?
Coffeo comments on Mar 25, 2018:
We need to have people (and I guess men will usually be in the majority here) who can use violence when it is really needed. I'm thinking particularly about policing. But it is certainly possible to be a 'real man' without it. There are many non-violent men whose 'manliness' is not in doubt.
Why are we hated for hating xmas?
Coffeo comments on Mar 25, 2018:
I like many things about Christmas. I went on liking Christmas long after I stopped believing.
I'm very careful about who I talk to about being atheist .
Coffeo comments on Mar 25, 2018:
If religious people feel insulted when you simply state your position, it's kind of their problem, isn't it? It's not as if your intention is to be insulting.
Growing up, & how we often destroy scientists before they start.
Coffeo comments on Mar 24, 2018:
I wonder if your family's crushing reaction would have been the same if you had been a boy? There are some very successful women astronomers (better represented there, I think, than in the other physical sciences). I was about 11 when I told my parents I wanted to be a research scientist. I went on to do just that. My mother thought I would make a lot of money. I didn't, but I made enough. I really wasn't all that ambitious, there just wasn't anything else that appealed to me to the same extent. I hope your children marvel at the stars. I hope you still marvel at the stars.

Anyone find it ironic that this year Easter and April Fools Day is the same day?
Coffeo comments on Mar 23, 2018:
I've been looking at the years in which Easter Day (the Sunday) falls on April 1st. There's a bit of a pattern to it. The last time it happened was 62 years ago, in 1956. But we only have to wait 11 years for the next one in 2029, and then another 11 years until 2040. After that, there's a massive 68 year gap until 2108. So if you want to play pranks on Easter Sunday, just three opportunities this century! (It happened 3 times in each of the 17th, 18th, 20th and 21st centuries and 4 times in the 19th century.)

What is your definition of The Universe?
Coffeo comments on Mar 19, 2018:
Believing something in science is inadvisable — one's beliefs are liable to be altered. I recommend not believing anything. To say of something that it is 'basic and true' sounds to me just the same as a statement of religious faith. Open minds are essential in science. Hawking's final paper offers some possibilities with regard to testing the idea of a multiverse. To me, the multiverse just seems wrong. But I do not hold any __beliefs__ concerning the matter. I think we still have a great deal to learn.
