So... I realized last night that eventually, this whole TP shortage will affect my love life!

Do you think the Corono-virus will hurt or help religion?
Cyklone comments on Mar 17, 2020:
I saw a picture of a town i USA that had been devastated by cyclones but the church was still standing. This was held up as proof of god's mercy. Noone seemed perceptive enough to ask about all the houses and lives destroyed while an empty building escaped. This seems to indicate that religious people have an unfathomable ability to deceive themselves about the benificence, or lack thereof, with regard to their imaginary psychopath. Consequently I don't thnk the virus will have any impact on religion. Those that believe will keep believing and those that don't will keep shaking their heads in fascination at the stupidity.
Do you think the Corono-virus will hurt or help religion?
Cyklone comments on Mar 17, 2020:
Well you could argue that they are more likely to rely on prayer rather than medicine and practical behaviours so more of them will die, so hurting religion. But most of them are hypocrites anyway so they'll say one thing and do another. So it will probably have little effect.

Cyklone comments on Mar 16, 2020:
The definition of dead has changed with technology. It was once heart stopped but I think now it's more to do with brain activity and heart stopped if your body is at room temperature. Because apparently you can be really cold and look clinically dead. Damned if I know when you are dead according to religion because they have miracles that can bring you back. 🤣🤣
So - I'll admit I'm really good at being a loner, and have practiced this "self-isolating" stuff ...
Cyklone comments on Mar 16, 2020:
I don't think of it as isolation time but as me time and I'm getting more and more selfish with that. I find that that I enjoy the company of the opposite sex, but in small doses, and that isn't a sexual reference. I'm just pretty ok with being by myself. I do have a dog, a rottie, and he's very affectionate.
Struggling with hell/satan/evil stuff.
Cyklone comments on Mar 16, 2020:
I don't believe in a soul. I mean, where is it? How does it interact with the body because if it doesn't interact with the body how could it learn/change/evolve? And if it can't do that, what's the sense of it? Why is there no evidence whatsoever that a soul exists despite research. Who have souls, people, dogs, cockroaches? It's all bullshit, when you're dead you're dead: no heaven, hell, ghosts, spirits etc. Just dead. And you won't care, because you'll be dead.

Cyklone comments on Mar 12, 2020:
I work with sexual offenders and recent studies in Australia show that recidivism rate for sexual offenders is 13% compared to the recidivism rate for violence offences around 70% so treatment is very effective. Having said that, if you can't work with these people in a non-judgemental manner you need to tell your supervisor that it's a problem because you risk making things worse. I am surprised that you are so sceptical of treatment. If you don't believe in the effectiveness of rehabilitation why are you choosing that as an occupation? Read my post on feb26th.

Time to buy a bidet toilet
Cyklone comments on Mar 8, 2020:
I was in Egypt in the late 70's when they used all foreign currency for munitions and had none for luxuries like toilet paper. Everyone had made a modification to their toilet by putting a branch and tap onto the water line to the toilet. The branch was a copper tube that went into the bowl and pointed up. After finishing your business you just turned on the tap and moved around to get everything washed, then dried with a towel. Cleaner, cheaper, more comfortable and doesn't require toilet paper. A very cheap bidet.
Back on here after a long time.

Go with what jloos91 says. Avoid relationships. If you get into a relationship now, because you are "injured" it is likely to be with a rescuer, not a supporter and rescuers try to keep you a victim. Don't get into a relationship till you're strong. Keep putting one foot in front of the other and you will get there. My mum was in your position but she had six kids and she worked three jobs to keep us fed, clothed and pay off a mortgage. Stay strong, you can do it but expect it to be a lonely trip for a while.Good luck.

Why do women have to enhance themselves to appeal to men.
Cyklone comments on Mar 7, 2020:
What makes you think women enhance themselves to appeal to men? Newsflash. It's not about you. Women enhance their appearance for a bloody lot of reasons that have nothing to do with men. A friend of mine would occasionally come to work really made up. When I commented on it she said she did that on days she felt like crap. Looking good gave her an emotional boost, and that's only one example. What about you? Don't you take some pride in your appearance and dress up at times to feel confident or good? It's the over the top cosmetic surgery, the boob and butt jobs that I think are problematic.

Cyklone comments on Mar 6, 2020:
You mentioned problematic past relationships as well: so bad you have ptsd? Ptsd would imply that they had been life threatening. Perhaps there are a few other things you need to realise about yourself. You chose these partners so perhaps you're attracted to women who are distant and perhaps you like being submissive, at least that's what comes across in your post. Maybe they are similar to a significant other so on another level you are comfortable being treated this way? Either way, if this relationship is typical for you, it's not the women who have the problem.

Can a slovenly hoarder change his habits?
Cyklone comments on Mar 5, 2020:
A hoarder who is depressed, amotivated and trying to recruit someone to rescue him. Gee, that's unusual!! Don't get sucked in, getting you to feel sorry for him is a strategy to which all too many women are vulnerable and although you may be resistant, don't help him sucker others. He can't be helped, only motivated to help himself and the greatest motivator is pain. I also wonder where his family are and how he ended up in this state. It may be hard hearted to think, but perhaps he is reaping consequences he has earnt.
Life is what it is...Can someone even find true love on earth anymore?
Cyklone comments on Mar 5, 2020:
I think we err in equating true love to something permanent. I suspect it is the way we feel towards our children (when they're asleep 🙂) and if we are talking about between adults then it incorporates the same elements but with added levels of respect for their adulthood eg. independence, decision making ability, strengths etc. Because love without respect is nothing. If you're really lucky it includes sexual desire. However because we may change dramatically through our lifetime it seems unreasonable to expect that this love would be unchanging.

What's true love? I asked a couple that once and was told, true love lasts forever. So what if it doesn't last forever I asked. The answer was that then it's not true love. That's when I gave up, so if you're going to ask the question we need an operational definition of true love

What do you get out of it? Perhaps instead of thinking of this as as your labour being volunteered you can think of it as a job and negotiate a price. I've heard single women complain that they aren't part of the mates network so they can't trade favours as we might swap a plumbing job for a carton of beer. So they are often looking for help they can trust . Personally I'm quite happy to swap handyman help for a couple of hours house cleaning, hot meal, home cooked pudding or cake. Saves me cooking.

Is forgiveness required? Is it hypocritical to judge others? I see hypocrisy all the time.
Cyklone comments on Feb 28, 2020:
Required for what? The only time I think forgiveness is required is if you have to continue to interact with that person, for instance with your spouse, because forgiveness means to also no longer hold them accountable. I also think that forgiveness must be asked for and that there are things that can't or shouldn't be forgiven. Who would dare to ask a woman to forgive a person who sexually abused her as a child for years. When I see people on tv who say they forgive the perpetrator I am baffled as to why you would do that. I think that acceptance is required and that people confuse the need for acceptance with forgiveness. Acceptance is just being able to accept, ok, that happened, I'm no longer disturbed by it, I no longer feel hatred or the need for revenge but that doesn't mean I'll ever forget what you did or forgive or have anything to do with the perpetrator.

Today's hike: Tibbets Mountain. No rednecks shooting guns this time.
Cyklone comments on Feb 26, 2020:
I don't get your gun laws. In Australia you are allowed to own guns and because of the wildness of our country sometimes it's necessary as it may be for you. I shoot competitively, at paper targets. We have extremely strict laws on who can own guns. Any history of violence or intentional law breaking and you don't get a licence. I can lose my licence by driving too far over the speed limit or drunk driving (deliberate law breaking) and so having a firearms licence makes me more aware of staying within the law. We have almost zero gun crime, none from registered owners and little from illegal guns because possession of a gun without a licence means a prison sentence by itself. Your problem is not the guns, although why anyone would need automatic weapons is beyond me, but that you have inadequate control over who owns guns. We are not allowed to have or use a gun for self defence or defence of property. There are no circumstances where it is legal to use a gun on a person and we are not allowed to use a gun any where near others, which excludes national parks or public land. The fact that you can go walking and be scared by others using guns is obscene but it is because you allow the wrong people to have them.

But USA has always been an elected dictatorship as opposed to the westminster system used by UK, Aussie etc. and fascism is a strong part of your government (very nationalistic) but for the most part it has worked for you, as a benevolent dictatorship is a healthy form of government, but when you get a dictator like trump who is not so benevolent they are a lot harder for you to remove than for us. We had corporal punishment at school and one night after being punished by the teacher that day, I got out if bed at 1.00am, ran across town and put a rock through that teacher's window. We lived in a small town. I know that hitting me only made me angry and vengeful so I knew it didn't work. Physical punishment only taught me to be violent. When I had my own kids I refused to use corporal punishment and found more creative and constructive punishments, like picking up dog poo of the lawn. It worked far better.

My work involves a wide variery of people, different religions, gender orientations, perpetrators and victims. I gave long given up on the concepts of right or wrong, good or bad. I've seen many things that clearly work despite other people judging it immoral or wrong and vice versa. I frquently ask people; does that work, did that work, how could we change it so that it works. People think better when you remove the moral value from decisions or get them to ket go of the idea that they are "right".

Are they advocating for violence because atheists don't believe in religion or is it just because we dare to disagree with them. Sadly, I see the same dichotony of thought amongst so called non religious people when you dare to disagree with their ideas. Rather than accept differing viewpoints it becomes important to them that you accept their view as the only correct one. Perhaps it is because of the right/wrong dichotomy taught within religion but the same dichotomies exist in other areas. Sport perhaps being an example. Personally, I think it wasn't until I was at Uni that I was given examples of competing theories and asked to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each. Perhaps this is a concept that should be part of child training.
My daughter just informed me that my step-son who lives in another state has passed.

Yes, I agree, it gives people false comfort. I'm not sure if they are afraid of dying so much as no longer being or of losing everything or soneone completely. But if it's our death it won't matter because we won't be aware that we're dead because we'll be dead and if it's the death of someone we love, suck it up. It hurts but you can learn to live without them. I appreciate your pain as I'm about to lose a loved one myself.
Could I be considered an atheist or a deist?
Cyklone comments on Feb 1, 2020:
The trouble with the concept of a god is that it just pushes the evolution theory further back. Did this higher force just spring into a fully cognizant being out if nowhere or did it have to evolve into being.. And if you accept accept that it is unlikely to have just suddenly come into existence but must have evolved then why do we need to have it at all. Maybe we are evolving gods, certainly my dog would think so if he had a metaphysical bent. But that is unlikely as we're more likely to destroy ourselves before that can happen.

It looks like it would go well through the dehydrator to be reconstituted on the track. That with some rice would be a hearty meal after a day walking.
What is the most sacreligious thing you have ever done?
Cyklone comments on Jan 29, 2020:
I told the local pastor that I thought there was very little difference between him and a drug dealer, that they both peddle false dreams, delusions and lies.
How old is too old?
Cyklone comments on Jan 28, 2020:
I changed my mind in my mid 40's after I went back to university and learnt to think in a critical fashion. It was then I realised it was all brain washing and I think now that the best way of waking people up is to teach them to think better so they can reanalyse the lies they were told as children and struggled to understand even then. People are not awakened through criticism or derision and we do them a disservice and cause them to dig in when we try.
What do you do when expected to participate in public religious ceremonies such as prayer?
Cyklone comments on Jan 19, 2020:
I'm with literate hiker. I stay respectful and collaborate to a degree ( I don't start eating before they've said grace) but I keep my head up and smile knowingly at all those other nonbelievers who are doing the same as me.
Do any of you think that a meaningful relationship can be acheived with a christian?
Cyklone comments on Jan 16, 2020:
I think any meaningful relationship requires both respect and love, the most important of these being respect. If you can respect each other's beliefs and accomodate those beliefs within the relationship without pressuring or trivialising them then I don't believe there is a problem and indeed I have seen such relationships function successfully.
Why are atheist so obsessed by religion?
Cyklone comments on Jan 14, 2020:
Because we're angry. Angry at how it has perverted every aspect of our lives and society and we want it to stop.
Does anyone else have a homophobic family member?
Cyklone comments on Jan 13, 2020:
Yes, my mother, but after banging heads with her many times over the subject I realised she was never going to change and I was damaging my relationship with her because of the conflict, and I love my 93 year old mother. After accepting she wouldn't change I decided to just avoid the topic with her and she has done the same. I realised that in some instances the fight isn't worth it because it is impossible to win and the cost of fighting is too high. That isn't always the case and in another instance I might just avoid the person or topic. I'm fortunate in that I can do this but I can't imagine how hard it might be for someone who wasn't hetero.
What is your response when people threaten you with religious punishments? (i.e. Hell/Jahannam)
Cyklone comments on Jan 10, 2020:
I ask them what their response would be if someone said to them that father xmas wasn't coming to them because they had been bad? Then I say, "now you what my attitude is to being told that I'm going to hell".
When someone says "There is no god" they're idiots! At that point it's up to then to prove that ...
Cyklone comments on Jan 10, 2020:
Theists and atheists come from two different perspectives and you can't prove the absence of a god to theists using their perspectives and nor can you prove the presence of a god to an atheist using their perspectives. That is, from my experience, it is pointless to try and argue a theist into atheism. The only way I have seen the awakening after them having spent years of being brainwashed, is to teach them to think more clearly and critically so they can come to the conclusion on their own. That's where tertiary education plays a huge part. Otherwise, it seems to take some trauma to cause people to reexamine their belief system and then it seems it can go either way. Theist to atheist or atheist to theist. It certainly never happens by ridicule as then people dig in and shut down to your arguments.

Perhaps not so much a neurological disorder or a predisposition to religion but having been trained to seek help from a higher authority by your parents. As a child one asks for help from parents when we are being hurt or things don't seem fair so we fall back on this same pattern, but who is a higher authority when you're an adult? Hence the tendency to invent a mythical higher being who can make things fair. That's one of the reasons that most adult conversions to religion are by people who feel desperate for help.

There needs to be another zone called the "I'm too old for this shit" zone, which is like the comfort zone, but different because you don't feel safe and in control, you just recognise that there is no safe and in control but you no longer give a damn.

So, in my late 60's, is it possible to be in all zones at once or to move backwards and forwards between them on an hourly basis, because it seems like that's where I come from? 😆
I'm sure many people on here have religious friends and family members that get on your nerves.

I didn't make any big announcement, just stopped agreeing with the hype and made the occasional comment like, I think the firemen/doctor etc had more impact than any thoughts or prayers. Most interesting was at xmas lunch when mum prayed thanks and I just looked around to see that none of my siblings were praying either.
