There are two reasons that justify reading the Bible: 1) To gather ammo to fight back whatever silly comment / belief the theists have and 2) To give it a meaningful use when there is a shortage of toilet paper....although it can't provide a good service since comes from the factory already full of cr..p. Your relative (the one who says would be the happiest if you embrace the Lord) deserves one of those answers that lingers over a person's head until death. Well, it all depends on "" how little"" is the little thing. The woman who helps an elderly lady in my building started to call me "Muchacha" (the only word she knows in Spanish). I told her that word, in my country, has a very negative connotation and I would prefer if she doesn't use said vocable with me...I even explained what it means. Regardless of the three tImes I asked her no to call me "muchacha"....she continued to do so. Few days ago I threatened her with contacting my lawyer. Hopefully, I won't be called a "whor..." any longer.

Many parents use the "old fashion techniques" to educate their kids; techniques handed down to them by their own parents. Some of said techniques -the mos harmful in MHO- are a) pushing the kid to excel by remarking his / her mistake and comparing the kid's mistakes to their siblings' achievements. They believe the shame will change the kid behavior to what the parents think is correct. b) To publicly humiliate the kids (neighbors / friends); the idea is "He/she -to avoid embarrassment, will not make more mistakes." These are only two of many...and the results are ferocious.

I don't think they are "the norm"...but I know there are many dysfunctional families contaminating mankind's future. During my 26+ years of teaching I have seen / heard a lot of ignorance handed down from the parents to their kids.

Does it matter how other think of you / your way of thinking? As a member of an Atheist family I never had to face "relatives opinions"....except those of a much younger second cousin whom, believe it or not, became a priest and works at the Vatican as a lawyer. Every times he is in USA , he comes to visit me and tries to convert me. Sometimes I laugh and sometimes I ignore him.

The same way other Atheists do....With the support of your friends and relatives, by crying whenever/wherever the memories engulf you, by seeking help from grief groups, by yelling and screaming if that helps you to exit out the pain, by helping others who are going through the same, by getting involved in organizations that deal with your stepmother disease and helping to find a cure.....

Please don't assume we all came from a religious background; I was born into an Atheist family...Atheist for generations going back to the end of the XIX century, in France. If I am not mistaken, my parents and siblings -who moved to Argentina in the 1940s- were one of the first Atheists families in said country.

I have visited 15 countries....The best experience I ever had. I love my visits to all of them but Mexico, Spain, Thailand and New Zealand are the ones that impressed me the most.

Yes, I taught in The Bronx. Many of my students made it all the way to great jobs. Charlie has a Master in Social Work, Keyla is an Speech Pathologist, Jennifer is a Nutritionist, Félix is a Marine and is studying Military Psychology, Pepe has a Master in Computers....and the list is long and I am extremely proud of them. Whenever they asked me about my beliefs I told them "I am an Atheist." Their questions / answers were a lot more intelligent than those presented by most adults.

Since I was born into an Atheist family I never had to worry about doubting religion. My parents never told me -or my siblings- to be/become Atheists but provided us with the tools debates / chats / literature / chats with a cousin who later became a priest..) to make our own decisions. My father always told us: "Whenever a person tells you a FACT you should investigate if he/she is telling you the truth or only his/her fact."
