Three reactions to Jesus not returning.

Is There an Objective Reality?
DangerDave comments on Apr 1, 2018:
I'd have said "yes" until reading some of the responses. Ironically, @TheMiddleWay and I have been at odds about objective reality on several points so I'm both thankful (and surprised) at his response. Seeing there are so many greatly varying *opinions* of what exactly objective reality is on this site alone I'll readily adopt the **no** stance (not **NO!!!** however...I'm not that sure OR dogmatic), though I won't pretend to know the SCIENCE!!! of it. Not that I care anyway. This is enough "worshipping" at the temple of SCIENCE!!! for me today, tyvm.
Are you more left-brained or right-brained?
DangerDave comments on Apr 1, 2018:
I'm right brained, left handed too. And since there is scientific evidence a bumblebee can't fly pardon my skepticism of institutionalized "science", or SCIENCE!!! as I prefer to call it. Some people just have to worship something though.
The things you do for love...

DangerDave comments on Mar 30, 2018:
I celebrate Ishtar with the pagans, especially the fertility rites. Does that count? The seasonal candy's good too. Not nearly as much as the rites but still.

Looks like more handling and less insertion would have worked better for this bunch.
Death from an Agnostic/Atheist perspective
DangerDave comments on Mar 30, 2018:
The very stance of "agnostic" is we don't know. I go a step further as an apathetic atheist (apatheist) in that since there is no proof for or against any of the many possibilities I see no need to concern myself with them. Mourn naturally. I suggest you celebrate the life of your mother in some way. Fondly remember your times together. Perhaps do something you both enjoyed. I go a step further in that I have adopted some of the concepts of Celtic ancestor worship. I have a mental "conversation" with some, especially in times of need. It doesn't matter in what ways they are "there". One way they are "there" is in the effects they have had on our lives and, for parents, as the bringers of life itself.

Are most modern spiritual movements a net positive?
DangerDave comments on Mar 30, 2018:
Without a detailed explanation I see no "crutch" in using the spiritual and philosophical elements of buddhism, for instance, which I do on a daily basis. On the contrary, I see it useful in many ways a dogmatic mind could never understand. I do have the benefit of in depth studies of several religions not only to understand what it is, but why and how it came to be. Never having been religious I've never felt a need for a "cure" for religion, either. For some it may be...so long as it's not merely trading one dogma for another. Still, if the new dogma is less harmful to the planet and its people, that works as well.
Sometimes it's not worth the savings

Has anyone attended a public school that incorporated intelligent design into their curriculum?
DangerDave comments on Mar 27, 2018:
I was lucky to have went to public schools before the rise of fundamentalism impacted them, even in the suburban south. When we studied evolution (in 3rd and 6th grades, if I remember correctly) a general statement of "this is the most accepted theory but there are others" was about the only mention there was. Yes, we have entered another dark ages.

Are you superstitious?
DangerDave comments on Mar 27, 2018:
Sad there wasn't a "depends" option. I've turned over some lemons but it was because they were lemons...bad engineering (or repair record), not bad juju. Still, I have my moments. All other options being equal, I'll bet on the queen. It works for me...about 25% of the time.
Care to share any creative date ideas?
DangerDave comments on Mar 27, 2018:
I came to Vegas for the arts and entertainment but there are still plenty of museums and intellectual activities abound. I'd avoid lectures on a first date for the same reason I would a concert: it's just not the best environment to get to know someone. A definite plan would be NerdgaZms, a comic shop filled with a museum of memorabilia of almost every imaginable superhero from almost every era. The staff there may as well be curators...they know their comics...movies, toys, games... Assuming she wasn't a comic buff we still might hit it off...after all, I'm looking for models and potential act leads before "dates" and companions.

Scientific socialism
DangerDave comments on Mar 26, 2018:
Scientific socialism (as previously described in Wiki) sought to apply scientific principles to the understanding of this system of government but, as any first year political science major will tell you, there are far too many variables to make viable predictions in any system of governing large numbers of individuals. Generally speaking, the success of any method of government is far more dependent on the character of those governing...but those qualities alone largey defy objective analysis. And that tells us nothing of current social trends or the price of pig bellies.

See my profile for details but, if you're ever in Las Vegas I'd love to meet you, do a theatrical photoshoot with you and...though it's probably far too large a project to take on with all you're doing already...be my act lead! DangerDave comments on Mar 25, 2018:
Why do I have a sudden desire to be a pre-k student in a Okie public school...anyway... You're in a tough position because there is very likely a strong evangelical, fundamentalist xian influence among your peers. You'd know better than me how you'll have to "front" for your social survival, which is likely directly tied to your professional position. Still, having put myself in a worse situation (as a K-12 music teacher in a fundie southern baptist school) I learned all too well when to play along and when there was no need to do so. As well as it payed I could only keep up the charade a year. Your mileage may vary.

DangerDave comments on Mar 25, 2018:
I have. I'm an apathetic agnostic and spiritual humanist so it was much easier for me...not in what I believe but what I can accept the possibilities of...even if that is not inclusive of any typical beliefs in abrahamic gods. When I finally got sober I did three consecutive "90 in 90s" and found my sobriety was more important than any definitive description of my HP. That was immaterial as I got to the work of making amends and clearing the wreckage of my past. I just celebrated 17 years of sobriety and I've not been to a meeting in 2 years. The last several years I've gone were single annual visits to pick up a chip. More details of my experience as well as those of others who have found (as yet) viable alternatives to 12 step programs can be found in our group: https://agnostic.com/group/Recovery

Why do we simply group emotions as positive or negative?
DangerDave comments on Mar 25, 2018:
I seek balance in everything and, as such, see a wide range in emotions as opposed to the "fringes". Looking at the practical over the philosophical, here is the "emote wheel" I was introduced to in acting class. Robert Plutchik's approach didn't give a positive or negative value to emotions here, but instead focused on their intensities. Practicing each in a mirror is entirely optional.

DangerDave comments on Mar 21, 2018:
Our most recent (pre Trump) government research shows the benefits and detriments of the use of marijuana for many physical and mental health issues. Read it yourself but the major consensus is there is not enough data to come to a conclusion. Still, in more politically liberal areas of the US the positive reports continue as more areas vote to legalize marijuana. Marijuana seems to be flying below Trump Dynasty radar as our desteemed dictator goes after the death penalty for opioid dealers, except of course the real ones who are his friends and personal profits in big pharma. link: Committee on the Health Effects of Marijuana: An Evidence Review and Research Agenda Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice https://www.nap.edu/read/24625/chapter/1
