Bertrand Russell described the struggle against religion as not just going back to The Enlightenment, but all the way to the ancient Greeks. I agree with him, and it is a struggle. For a thousand years we lost; we call it the Dark Ages. No one criticised religion then.

I don't think you can compare them. STTNG was 20th Century ST episodic tv, like it used it be. Picard is 21st Century one continuing narrative week to week dark grim story telling, like it is now. Old ST used to deal with a multitude of themes, set against a better species and future. It reflected that optimism. New ST is personal story telling set against a grim dark future. It reflects our pessimism, or at least the pessimism that Power wants us to wallow in, as it makes it easier to manipulate us. I keep a critical distance from it.

@RobinGray Trump is proto fascist populism from the Right. What is needed is populism from the Left. Bernie's movement was that. What was needed was support behind that. The media are spinning that Biden has created a movement with momentum. I predict that this will not be the case. He will not stand up to scrutiny. His minders can't hide his declining mental condition, as they have over past weeks. Krystal Ball the journalist in a video put it perfectly yesterday: Biden is an empty vessel into which corporate media are pouring their projections for a do nothing President. All of this will become so obvious well before November. It is like putting all your money on Dragon Fly on the 2pm race, though he's lame, and likely won't finish the race. What your country needs is a kind of people's power mobilization. Yes, I know how cliche that sounds. A mass mobilization of votes against the elites would be a start. Your ruling class are terrified of it. They would use every dirty trick, just like they did back in the late 60s when a consciousness of change and challenge to authority occurred. I'm not sanguine either. Even if Bernie got elected they would mobilize. I still hope he does, and that he goes for broke with a strong personal power base.
