David1955 comments on Apr 25, 2019:
Yes, the great triump of Right Wing Economics since the 70s has been to peddle and smother the political/economic debate with this narrative that private good and government bad. Even when the economic system came close to collapse in 2008, due to uncontrolled private financial system, the response by the right was bale us out and then remove what few resictions were left. But this dominant economic ideology has unravelled since that time; popular sentiment has turned against this right wing economic paradigm, and the right wingers flounder around, still peddling their discredited theories, like a gambler for whom one last bet will save the day, or an alcoholic who really only needs one last drink. But the progressive side of politics needs to stand up, argue its case, and stop cowering to attacks from the right.
First, I have read all the comments to my previous post and let me start out with an apology.

We know you do all the work, and our gratitude should never waver. Without you there would be no site. But without members, and active members, there is no functioning site. So, the relationship is codependent for a successful site, and one of the joys in the early days, for me, was having prospective changes and ideas raised and discussed. Hope that continues. Thanks.

How many of you feel discriminated against for been Atheist?
David1955 comments on Apr 23, 2019:
There are already laws of free speech, if the religious are not able to subvert them. There are places where non-religious people are discriminated against, and it's shocking. Not where I am. It's the failure to have or enforce free speech laws. What I resent is the constant stream of articles from mainstream conservative media maligning non religious people, and prominent atheists as well. This truly ticks me off.

Minister says virgin birth is bizarre claim, prayer doesn't really work, maybe nothing happens after...
David1955 comments on Apr 20, 2019:
How about we stop saying "virgin birth" and say what we are really talking about: God impregnating a woman from the heavens, with or without her consent. I mean, really? Sure, that is what Gods do - knock women up so they can visit in human form. Even in early Christian variants of the religion they thought that was a crock. To think that some people today really believe that. Boggling.
Elizabeth Warren is gaining stock in my opinion.
David1955 comments on Apr 20, 2019:
I like the fact that she doesn't just waffle on about America the wonderful and all that kind of stuff, but says specific things, as in " this is what I'm going to do...A, B, C.." That is what you need. Enough Obama-like poetry. Clear prose.
There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding quantum mechanics.
David1955 comments on Apr 20, 2019:
Very much agree. QM has become the last best hope of religionists now that science has left religion in the dust; they hang on to this notion that QM and QT will somehow vindicate them. Pathetic. They think that maybe they'll see God at the quantum level and then proclaim they were "right" all along. The New Age peddlers got into it first. Now it has seeped into the periphery of mainstream religions. I've had religionists try it on with me, and I tell them to read real scientists with real Ph.ds. I won't have it. The attempted supernaturalizing of these fields of science should be called out vigourously. My own brother (who is religious) attempted to peddle this crap in a speech/sermon at our mother's funeral recently. I was not pleased.
Do you feel mentally exhausted by analysis of Robert Mueller's Report?
David1955 comments on Apr 20, 2019:

David1955 comments on Apr 19, 2019:
Yes, finally....Finally! .. FINALLY!!!! the truth comes out from Mueller, at least in partly redacted form, but even that is shocking, confirming what those of us to have learnt to read and have reasonable instincts about people knew already: He's a liar, a phoney a crook, and a rotten businessman. The shocking arrogance of this crook is that he was stupid enough to think that becoming President would never bring light to his criminal cronies and connections and cons. As if Lucky Luciano might have said,"Hey boys, ya tink I might become President already?" Er, no, Lucky, that's only gonna bring the heat on us, they would have told him. But then Lucky was a smarter crook than Trump. But will it bring him down? Will that brainless "base" of his finally wake up? That's what we don't know.

David1955 comments on Apr 17, 2019:
I've always felt that believers, despite their pretense, are full of fear -- fear of God, fear of death, fear of sinning, fear they won't be 'forgiven', fear of their own impulses, fear of their church, fear of being caught out by other believers, and above all fear of their own doubts. Hardly likely to produce piece of mind or happiness.

David1955 comments on Apr 16, 2019:
Yes, I agree with you. I just can't work out Assange anymore, but even so abandoned is what has happened. Even Australians who commit crimes abroad, like drugs, are rightfully given help, and no one hates drugs more than me. Don't expect that moral vacuum Shorten to do anything either. Australia is little more than a Protectorate of the US, despite our boasting and bragging.
We never did learn from Watergate and the betting is that we won't either from Trump.

The old dictum that those who refuse to learn from history are bound to repeat it, is quite right. The US is a case in point. Vietnam - Afghanistan; Nixon - Trump.
I was just wondering how many declared "Believers" are really atheists pretending to believe.
David1955 comments on Apr 14, 2019:
I would express it differently. I think many so-called believers are religious only in the sense of the habit, ritual and identity of religion, and not in any real sense to the claims and beliefs of religion. Press them on their religion and you get little more than a simple summary of religious clichés. The doubts they have are internized or ignored because the actual beliefs are not that important in the first place. Huge numbers of people like this make up the numbers in religion, in my opinion. I wouldn't call them atheists, exactly, but notionally religious people based on habit and intellectual laziness.
How to run for president: 1.
David1955 comments on Apr 14, 2019:
All true. But the rise of Trump is not just due to a bad guy becoming president. It's a reflection of the systematic failure and corruption of US political, electoral, and legal systems. The latter might just stop him, but after the failure of Mueller, whom I predicted months ago was a republican first and investigator second, I'm losing hope on that too. I hear Americans say that all they need to do is get rid of Trump. Wrong. They need major reform of the systems I mentioned above. World belief in American exceptionalism is dead. The US needs to stop preaching democracy and make an effort to practice it for a change.
I keep wondering what you people who call yourselves "agnostics" on here claim to be agnostic about.
David1955 comments on Apr 13, 2019:
Good point about this word and the reaction people have. Change the word God to "Gerald" and how would people react? "Gerald loves me. I'm agnostic about Gerald. Son of Gerald born of a virgin. It's the Will of Gerald." Gerald is just a sound formed in our brains expressed in speech. So is God. The word is used to provoke an emotional response. But it's just a word, a sound. Atheists like me either never have had, or have expunged, an emotional response to this sound. It's just a sound. It doesn't mean anything.
We absolutely need to find a way to establish dialogue between competing groups.

You begin with a false assumption: that science is, has or will prove that God does not exist. Science is under no obligation to prove this negative, any more than it is to prove any other negative. If believers wish to try to "prove" their alleged God, then that's up to them, though it's a fool's errand, and actually they don't want to anyway. The whole premise of your post is questionable to say the least, and so therefore is your "conclusion".

David1955 comments on Apr 7, 2019:

A week or two back I posted my concern, actually annoyance, that there are too many posts like this addressed to agnostics, leaving it unclear whether it was just for agnostics, or really intended for all nonbelievers, and posters just thinking that since this site is called agnostic.com that it is ok just to say agnostics. I got criticised by some, saying that posts addressed to agnostics should be ignored by atheists like me. Others said that of course posts are directed to nonbelievers alike. So, you tell me. I still find this annoying. I, myself, do not specify a particular group unless I have a reason to do so.

Is anyone else bored to death with the entire atheist theist debate?
David1955 comments on Apr 5, 2019:
The debate between Atheism and Theism is central, so I don't see how that is boring. It is the debate between reason and mysticism; it is the debate between evidence and superstition; it is the difference between a world based on rational thinking and one based on supernaturalism. It is, as Bertrand Russell used to say, a debate that goes back longer than the Enlightenment, indeed it goes back to the time of the Greeks. For a thousand years the debate was lost. It was called the Dark Ages. Many here are committed to the idea that it will never happen again. And it could happen again. Winning the debate against theism, and it's pursuit of mysticism, supernaturalism, and magic based beliefs, is crucial to our future. Theism is becoming ever more weaponized and dangerous. No, I'm not bored to death with this debate. Quite the opposite. I am bored to death with the debate between *Atheism and Agnosticism*. But that's another matter.

David1955 comments on Apr 4, 2019:
I blame Mueller. Sorry, he's a good man and all that, but either he was compromised, or he showed poor judgement. Not making a clear finding on obstruction? That was his job. If he thought the President couldn't be indicted but should have been, he should have said so. If the finding was no obstruction, then say that. Make a statement. Hold a press conference. Do something instead of meekly giving it to Barr and hoping the Congress would do something. It was feeble. Now his people are leaking their disapproval. Not good enough. History will judge him well on the conduct of the investigation, but poorly on the delivery.

After a conversation with a Christian, I've had some continuing thoughts.
David1955 comments on Apr 1, 2019:
From my experience, Christians invoke free will when it suits them, and they suspend it when it suits them. When you ask them why their God doesn't stop terrible things, they say God gives us free will and he doesn't interfere. When they want to "prove" their God, they invoke stories about God saving people, and other actions when God has done this and that on earth, including miracles, and indeed their whole Jesus story is one big godly intervention. When pressed on the contradiction they say it's all god's will, we can't understand, and it's all faith. On free will Christians have no credibility, whether they are well or poorly educated, they proffer the same nonsense.

How can someone be agnostic and a believer both?
David1955 comments on Mar 30, 2019:
These days with this vast spectrum on which people like to place themselves -- believer, agnostic, ignostic, atheist-agnostic, agnostic-atheist - etc etc etc.. it seems you can call yourself anything and get away with it. I prefer less prevaricating across questionable spectrums and more serious thought and decisiveness in opinion. So, no, you can't be a believer and an agnostic.

I wish people wouldn't use silly usernames, but use their first name with something added. I like to know I'm dealing with a John, Mary or Frank, and not some silly name. Sorry but that's how I feel.
How many of you know how Lucille Ball saved TOS? [google.com]
David1955 comments on Mar 24, 2019:
I did. At Desilu she also approved Nichelle as Uhura. Bless her. She was quite a lady at a time when it was a struggle for women in Hollywood power structures.
Breaking News “No Russia Collusion By Trump” - YouTube
David1955 comments on Mar 24, 2019:
None of this white wash of Trump is a surprise to me. I predicted it months ago, and posted on it here. The American Establishment again protected itself. They weren't able to save Nixon. They've learnt since then. Any effort to destroy a Democratic President, though that party is hardly progressive, and no effort spared to protect their party of oligarchy, the Republican party. It's part of the decline of America, the drift towards autocracy. Probably inexorable. Mueller wasn't strong enough to stand up to the momentum. I predicted he wouldn't. We have to think of America as post liberal-democratic, evolving autocratic.
How do we know that the vacuum of space has structure and is more than empty nothingness?
David1955 comments on Mar 24, 2019:
I'll tell you why it matters to me. When religionists say there had to be a God because nothing can come from nothing. Wrong! Read some science I tell them. Real scientists. Not new age wankers. There's never nothing. It's not all figured out yet, I understand, but enough to know religious arguments on this, like everything else, are redundant.
How have you seen movies get space wrong?
David1955 comments on Mar 24, 2019:
Space movies are a projection of ourselves. Little to do with real space. Bangs and explosive sounds in space. No Sounds of spaceships whizzing by. No Massive acceleration and deceleration, no impact. No Planets of people who all look the same, speak a single language, all believe a single culture, have the same skin tone, and wear the same clothes. Just like here on Earth, where we Earthians all speak an Earthian language, have a single Earthian culture, follow a single Earthian leader, and wear Earthian clothes. Oh, wait a minute, maybe not.
Did Jesus Christ commit sins?

It's a bit like contemplating if Robin Hood humped Maid Marion in Sherwood Forest. Like they really existed.
Ok, Discovery, a "Time Crystal"?
David1955 comments on Mar 23, 2019:
I watched it tonight and I heard time crystal and had the same reaction. I laughed. You can't just invent something like that without explanation. It's a patchy series like that. My dislike of the babbly Tilly is so bad I dread her every week. Same for Anthony Rapp. I'm trying to love it, but things and people annoy.

I sense a witch hunt has turned into a white wash. I predicted this months ago. A few scape goats, a few pawns sacrificed, and on we go. Republican blood is thicker than anything. Hope I'm wrong. I haven't been wrong yet.
The US is not exceptional, unless you talk about how it exceptionally supports dictatorships, ...
David1955 comments on Mar 23, 2019:
Yes, and it reflects the ruling class which runs the US, I like to think not the majority of Americans. Somehow they need to take back their country, and it won't be easy. The US needs to be a liberal democracy, not a republic empire.

David1955 comments on Mar 22, 2019:
"*In philosophy, atheism is defined broadly as an affirmation that no god of any type exists. Under that definition, an atheist is required to prove his/her case as much as the deist or believer does*" Professor, who in philosophy asserts this, which area of philosophy, and on what basis is this claim made? The "Philosophy Community", with respect, doesn't mean much. It's an extraordinary assertion, in my view -- that a negative has to be proven. Without specific citation it's not an assertion I could take seriously, honestly. At best it could only be an opinion.

David1955 comments on Mar 22, 2019:
'Atheism is religion' is the weakest argument of the weakest religious apologists who have nothing to say in defense of their bronze age myths, and their imaginary God.

Can you be atheist and agnostic?
David1955 comments on Mar 21, 2019:
I've long since abandoned any reference to agnosticism to describe myself. I'm an atheist, but if anyone comes up with evidence of any God then we'll look at it. So it's not a rigid belief claim, as some argue. I have no expectation that any evidence will come along though. I know there are positions of agnostic/atheist. I've heard them. They don't impress me however.
"I am a born-again atheist, so there isn't going to be a funeral.
David1955 comments on Mar 20, 2019:
I've left notes that there will no ceremony, just cremation, and I'd like my ashes spread in Thailand. The last night be a challenge. But here's an irony: back in the 80s, along with other family members, I bought a plot at my home town Catholic church cemetery. It cost $200. A lot back then. We recently laid my mother to rest there. It's impossible to buy plots there now. But I don't want to be buried there. I don't want to be buried, and I don't want to be in a church cemetery. So I'll never use it. I own a valuable plot that I don't want. What an irony. And I sure could use that 200 dollars now. :-)

Well, I tend to think the only thing we truly believe in is our own propaganda. I myself gave up this form of worship a long time ago.
Which of the following persons really existed?
David1955 comments on Mar 19, 2019:
It doesn't matter whether historical figures really existed? Well, it may not matter to you, friend, but as a student and teacher of history, not mythology, it bloody well matters to me. I'm guessing you've never studied history at tertiary education level. Let's just all embrace fake history. It'll go well in a world of fake news. Tell someone who survived the Holocaust that it doesn't really matter or not if Hitler really existed. I suppose by the same logic it doesn't matter if a scientific fact is really true or not. Just as long as a lot of people think it is true.
Ok, time to talk about hipocrisy, but this time in our own site.

She's on the young side, and learning, and finding her place in the cutthroat world of politics, and she might make mistakes sometimes. But she's smart, a quick study and confident, and most of all she driven by idealism, not idealism in a vacuum, but idealism that needs to be translated into real outcomes. She, and others like her, terrify your puppet corporate politicians. Seekers of the truth, and idealists, terrify the corrupt elites. Can you see her bought off by big pharma, the corporate elite, the military and the rest? I can't. And she'll inspire others of her age. I worry about what dirty tricks, false flags and off-book Ops your elite power players might wage against her. This happens far too often in the US. This is my worry.
Things were much better in the old days...
David1955 comments on Mar 17, 2019:
I don't think even Ronald Reagan would recognise this party now, and I can't believe I'm saying that, and I'm in no way fooled by the hyperbole about Reagan. Sucking up to Russians and dictators? Giving a pass to Neo fascist types? Vilifying migrants? Etc. When you allow a party to be taken over by religious fanatics and oligarchic elites, this is what happens.
Space (A.K.A. Outer Space, Cosmological Space) is not an empty void, not free of substance or form.
David1955 comments on Mar 15, 2019:
I remember being impressed by a lecture by Lawrence Krause about the universe never being "empty". Even space with particles passing through it removed has quantum level virtual particles popping in and out. Not just interesting as a scientific point, but on religion, the false claim that there had to be God because nothing can come from nothing. Wrong. There's never nothing, it seems in science. Even in general language the word nothing is used generally but inaccurately. Nothing on my mind; nothing on my plate; nothing out there..etc Of course my mind is not empty, my plate has food crumbs on it, and things are out there.
Trump, acting EXACTLY like Hitler in the 1930s, before he had achieved dictator powers.
David1955 comments on Mar 15, 2019:
I don't see military or police or similar groups coming out for Trump, but the delusional cap wearing boobies who are too stupid to see what Trump is, they might go rogue, especially if it gives them an excuse to exercise their racist white supremacist beliefs. No one should discount how dangerous Trump is.

David1955 comments on Mar 11, 2019:
Yes, I've noticed that too. At the beginning there were many, telling us that Trump meant what he said and other justifications. Some people will never admit they made a mistake. They'll either keep it up against all odds, or retreat away. I feel that's what happened here.
