Atheism/Agnosticism and Antisemitism I’ve seen a great deal of ire here directed towards ...
DavidLaDeau comments on Apr 3, 2018:
I haven't seen that here please post specific instances. Judism is simply the root of the abrahamic religions. Christianity is very anti Semitic due to their holy fable. The gospels were written that way in order to find favoritism among the Romans. They attempted quite successfully to shift the blame from themselves (Jews) to the Jews that had just revolted from the Romans. This is where they in history made the great seperration from "the Jews" after the revolt of 66 C.E. It was an effort to make Christianity acceptable. It worked. That is why we have the washing of hands scene that never actually happened. Antisemitism was a very unfortunate result. Six million Jews are not alive to testify to this point.

Does someone have to be college educated to be intelligent?
DavidLaDeau comments on Apr 3, 2018:
Intelligence is genetic. Education is learned. I am self educated. I focus on early Christianities. Every time I speak with a Christian minister they ask me where I went to seminary. Does it mean I am intelligent? No. I am simply educated. It is nice to have both, I hope that I do have both. If I am not super smart I can fake it with education.

So how did the pagan holiday of Easter get subsumed in the christian resurection holiday?
DavidLaDeau comments on Apr 3, 2018:
Easter is based on the spring renewal. That is after winter when plants and trees go dorment or die they come to life again. This is a resurrection of life. This has always been a common theme through history and very obvious in all cultures that have distinctive seasons. The only places this is not observed is at the equator. When we put this in a religious context we have dying and rising gods. This is also symbolically represented on the rising and setting of the sun daily. This is why most religions are based on sun worship. The sun dies at night and is revived in the morning. This is where the Christian religion gets the halo. It is symbolic of the sun.

Hell does exist in our literature and our minds. We have yet to prove or perceive it in any other manifestation.
DON'T BE AN ATH-HOLE.
DavidLaDeau comments on Apr 2, 2018:
I do call out the ridiculous beliefs of religion. I do feel it is necessary to do so in order to help others to understand that it is acceptable to question their beliefs and also to normalize agnosticism and atheism. I do not like snappy memes that make fun of religion without any background or context. These I believe to be counterproductive. It is productive to inspire thought in the correct context to show that a perfect god that does not prohibit slavery in his book can not be perfect. It is very important that while we do point out fallacies in religion that it is pointed at irrational beliefs and never at the believer. If I am guilty of such ridicule please let me know.

Men, do you agree with this quote from Christopher Hitchens?
DavidLaDeau comments on Apr 2, 2018:
You have messed up my godlike admiration for Christopher. I might hold a grudge just a little now. No, I have always loved and admired females. I in particular prefer the company of those that are more intelligent and better educated than myself. It is a joy there is no animosity what so ever. Now if a lady breaks down my almost idolized perceptions of a great thinker I might experience just a little disgust....keep up the good work!

The Top 10 Ways to Avoid Becoming An Atheist June 20, 2015 [atombash.
DavidLaDeau comments on Apr 2, 2018:
Actually, I was so brainwashed I was unafraid to seek the "truth". I was convinced that it would all lead back to God so there was nothing to fear no matter what I was told. I had to "faith" that others did not have to explore things outside my faith, I knew God would show me what was real and not real. When I did explore the truth, I actually found that one passage from the Bible was true. "The truth shall set you free." It certainly did, from religion.
I will never understand why some people have the "the Bible answers everything" mindset.
DavidLaDeau comments on Mar 23, 2018:
Uuh, the Bible does in fact answer everything. If one reads the bible with confrimation bias and pre-concieved notions there can and will be a verse that "fits" whatever anyone wants it to say. It does not matter if it does not even vaguely address the issue at hand. Our mind is capable of self delusion and very good at it.

DavidLaDeau comments on Mar 23, 2018:
God is said to be outside space and time and said to work in our world. By definition, if he is outside space and time he could not interact in time and space. God is said to do miracles. the word miracle is almost identical to the word magic. Magic is defined as events that occur outside the laws of physics. So by definition, god is claimed to literally do the impossible.

DavidLaDeau comments on Mar 21, 2018:
Its time to do even more research. The more religious a culture is the higher the crime rates, divorce, unwanted pregnacy etc. It is true that religion can be and is used as a coping mechanism. My question is if a coping mechanism is based on fantasy that is actually believed to be real is that really healthy? Is it not wiser to use coping mechanisms that are based in reality so that we can deal with what is real? I certainly do understand your position and did share it. I have wrestled with it myself for quite some time. I have not completely resolved internal conflict on the subject. I have found that when one expects prayers to be answered by an imaginary God as a coping mechanism for serious problems such as cancer, It often leaves the person prematurely dead, when the nonexistant god fails to answer said prayers. They should have gone to the doctor and sought counseling. Education is indeed a key factor. The more educated people are the better descisions they make and in general are happier. Religion actively chides people that delve into any education that challenges their religious beliefs. This can include the field of medicine. People actually watch their chidren die because they reject modern medicine due to their religious beliefs. If they do have any solice and comfort from their imaginary god that let their child die, is that good? I am against religious practices as they are harmful to people even when they appear harmless. The term "get real" comes to mind. Having an imaginary friend as a child is one thing. Obeying an imaginary friend as an adult is dangerous.
What Were They Thinking?
DavidLaDeau comments on Mar 20, 2018:
Google the god helmet. This is one thing that may answer your question. We do have the ability to alter our brain patterns with or without drugs. Meditative states are the prime example of this and can be seen with proper medical equipment. Some can induce hallucinations or use drugs to the same affect. There has never been any magical realms ever recorded. What we can observe is altered mind states. Its all in your head is in this case accurate. This being said many altered mind states can be and are benifitical such as in the case of pain control. Not all people are able to manifest these ablities.
Here is my stance, regarding god if I am wrong.
DavidLaDeau comments on Mar 20, 2018:
I will simply tell god, "Watch it, buddy I have an iron chariot." And the Lord was with Judah; and he drove out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.” Judges 1:19
Did you grow up in a religious home and when did you realize you didn't believe?
DavidLaDeau comments on Mar 20, 2018:
my family was extremely religious. I was a complete fundalmentalist extremeist, wacko. I was born ad indoctrinated from birth, many thought I would become a preacher. It was not until I was almost 30 that I really questioned seriously my beliefs. It was maybe a decade later that I could admit it to myself. Only myself. It was many years later that i came out completely at age 44 in i bleive 2015. I only did when my 14 year old son was sent to the principles office. He said, "ooh my God" in class. The teacher said "don't say that you are a Christian." when he responeded "I am an athiest." She sent him to the princables office. No one knew I was an atheist even my wife of 16 years. I could not let that slide the cat was out of the bag. Almost instantly I became active. My son and I did not even know that we were both atheist until that event.
This is just crazy I have to share it.
DavidLaDeau comments on Mar 20, 2018:
It is really sad actually. When preachers die in these cases I have not heard of one account of anyone leaving the church or questioning their belief. One would think with just one instance of it happening the entire movement would disappear. He obviously had so much faith in nothing that it killed him.
God will "judge" us?
DavidLaDeau comments on Mar 20, 2018:
Gods judgment is not a factor anyway according to Christianity. God is said to be just yet they only reqirement to be in his grace is belief, which is not just and makes his judgement inconsequential.

DavidLaDeau comments on Mar 20, 2018:
Many religions believe they have to convert or kill you. Most religions belive they have to convert everyone to their "truth." I do not wish to make anyone an atheist. Why pray for me?
DavidLaDeau comments on Mar 20, 2018:
Even though I may be among the most "hard" of atheist on this site, I was a christian. Why pray for you? 1) It is often an impulsive thing to say, much like thank you when some one hold s a door. It is just second nature o say it. It does not mean they have any actual intent to do so. 2) They may feel helpless. They may actually care and wish to "do what they can" even though they may have no actual expatation for they prayers to work. Its just a "good idea." 3) They may want to sound good or Christiany as I put it. 4) They may actually belive that theier magical sky daddy will help. I am a veteran. I was a 8404 Hospital Corpsman. It is my hope that you have sought counseling and appropiate care to include proper doctor ordered medication if necessary. It can and does help many. I can not help personally either. I do want you to know I do care and wish you the best. There, I have given a little advise, expressed my real concern and admitted my inability to personally help. No god, no prayers, no bull crap. I do hope you respond and get proper medical help if you have not. I wish you the best and thank you for your service.

DavidLaDeau comments on Mar 16, 2018:
Francis is the leader of the most powerful organization in the world. If one studies Catholic history one knows that politics are actually more important in the high levels of the church than any particular religious concerns. I am not bashing the Catholic faith here. Read any history of the church and they speak almost nothing about religion and focus only on political issues. The Vatican is a political machine on the world stage. Theocracy is its platform. Religion gives it power. The church will not and can not change to any significant degree. The color red is red no matter its shade or tone. Red is red. If you change it enough it is no longer red. The Vatican is the Vatican. It is not willing to change policies, it tone or shade, it by its nature is not designed to do so or become something that it is not. The small changes that we have seen have been only done in order to ensure its survival. The threat of non existence is the only thing that will have any effect on it at all.
Why some Americans left religion behind | Pew Research Center
DavidLaDeau comments on Mar 9, 2018:
No matter what us "old Farts" like to think. Our youth have a much better handle on science and logic than we did. They have a much better chance to break free from religion in society than we ever did. The internet did not exist when I was young. It today has been sited as the number one reason that people may reject religion. This Pew poll is ancient by todays standards. A whole two years. I would like them to do another one soon.
What if you had proof that there were no gods?
DavidLaDeau comments on Mar 9, 2018:
This is a diicult question to answer. The laws of logic would have to change also. If I could prove by definition what can not be proven it would get interesting. But lets play! Lets say that the Jewish God told the whole world at once "The Jesus thing is made up, Worship me the Jewish God in the Jewish way." Lets say he did this in a way that everyone recieved this as a personal message they could hear in thie own language(even the deaf and they could understand it. A great indisputable miracle, right? No. Many Christians or maybe most of them would become even more religious. sociology has demonstrated this again and again. Many would belive it was Satan trying to fool us and allowed by God to "test" us. They would become more ardent Christians. I do not have what I could not have, the ability to prove the unproveable. But I do have something of great value. The Bible. I can prove that the Bible was written by man. That it has a definate evolution of theology both within Judaism and in Christianity. I can prove that the authors had different and conflicting ideas. I can prove that it contains numerous forgeries. On a very bad day I can prove its very fallible. Would I tell anyone? I just did and will always do so at every opportunity. The reason is, I was brainwashed as a child and became a Young Earth creationist, Fundamentalist wacko. No matter how much I was indoctrinated It could not stop my thirst for knowlege, I wanted to know everything I could about God. As I studied, I came to the conclusion that it was made up . I believe it is very unhealthy for people to live thier lives based on what is not real. I do what I do to help others escape the bonds of religion as I had no one to help me. I had to do it on my own, in isolation. It is my hope that with my help the transition to reality will be much easier for others. Rant complete.

Vatican trains exorcists as demonic possession claims rise
DavidLaDeau comments on Mar 7, 2018:
This is very scary. There is a direct corrilation historically between "demonology" and increased religiousity. Remeber the 80s "Satanic Panic." When times roll around that there are less claims of Demononic possession there is simply less interest or dependance on the churh, I'm not even going tolook this one up. I would bank on the fact that most of these claims come from third world countries were there is not internet access and religion is on the rise. Interestingly the more cultures become religious the more they tend to "notice" demons. So there is a great truth to the saying that "People create thair own demons".

I have written about the in ability extensively on Atheist Nexus under the name compelledunbeliever http://atheistnexus.org/forum/topics/how-to-easily-understand-the-bible-better-than-theist . the can not interpret the scriptures BECAUSE they are Christians. The reason why is that they read into the Bible concepts that are fairly modern that do not exist in the Bible and makethat part of their theology. Not in the bibles ancient scriptures, A virgin birth, the rapture, the trinity, original sin, free will just to name a few. These are major Christinan concepts that they actually believe are in the Bible but are not. So when they read something that touches on a similar concept they read those ideas into the Bible. One of the major things about any religion or cult is exclusiivity. It is almost a necessery requirement. I am special because of my religion. If that was not the case the religion its self would not be special and thus not worth observing. Devine intervention be it miricules, or special knowed be it hallucinations or what ever is also very important in most religions. It does not matter what the facts are as long as they FEEL that their god is interceding for them. In short it is an understatement to say I am not surprised. I am very happy that you have on your own made these obversations.

"Atheism is not cohsen, it is discovered", Christopher Hitchens. I was a fundamentalist wacko. I believed there was nothing to fear in the search of discovery as it would all verify God and "his plan.' Though I was warned not o delve into the secular world I loved history and learning. I had God and nothing to fear. The Bilbe says that he truth shall set you free. It did. From religion. It was very difficult to admit it to my self for over a decade, these were troubling times. Once I actually came out due to my son being sent to the principles office for saying "Ooh my God", things chnged dramaticaly. I became an atheist activist almost over night. As I was extremely religious, It was th most liberating experince of my life. Yes it was the greatest relief to be accountable for my own actions and know that God was not responsable for the good or bad in my life, that life simply happens and I not a magic sky fairy had at least some control.

Who else would rather use natural medicines?
DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 21, 2018:
I actually wanted to be a Herbal Cultural Ethnologist. A mouthful I know. I wanted to study folklore in the pursuit of finding medicines. Natural plants etc. are what in fact medicines are usually made of. There is latent medicinal values to many herbs, some are powerful naturally. Most are very subtle at he most. We have to extract the pertinent chemicals fro said herbs in order for them to be clinically effective. Pharmaceutical medicines are better proven effective while their natural diluted forms usually have not. Can the help? Yes. Should natural remedies be expected to help? No. They may take time even years and be used as a preventative medicine in most cases to be effective. There are some exceptions but usually pharmaceutical grade medicines are he best. Another thing to consider is that many companies put out pure crap to make money and here is no regulation of "HERBS" so you are actually likely to be buying snake oil as opposed to actual medicine. As much as I dislike the government You can buy exact and regulated doses of medicine thrugh a pharmacy. This ensures hat it works and no one dies. That was my 2 cents.

Just because he was flatly wrong does not mean he did not have integrity and did not have good intent. He was not part of the media or part of CNN. He was simply a man that was influential and wrong.
Is there a reason we should speak respectfully of the dead?
DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 19, 2018:
The Dead on't care. Funeral are for the living. No matter how much I care for someone, once they are dead I simply accept it even though I don't like it. I'm not one for funerals as I actually accept reality and go on with life. My best friend does not know nor did he expect me to go to his funeral. I love him deeply. Now a jerk is a jerk, Why should we lie about his life? A lie is still a lie whether alive or dead. Hitler is dead and I am glad for it. He can do no more harm, only the stupid people can hold him up as a hero.
Are you racist?
DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 19, 2018:
I voted yes I am a racist and consider all races equal. Am I a hater? No.I do actually see (and often admire color and gender). Do I hate or active try to have bias? No. I was raised in a sexist, racist country and often have to correct stupid brainwashing that I don't even know I have concerning sex and color. It actually pisses me off. To be honest I am very aware they at least could there be bigotry and do my best to get rid of it as much as possible. It is he same for anyone that is not hetrosexual. I was brainwashed to think they were sinners. It is bullshit. I now accept people as humans. We are all black africans(that is fact). We all are sexual no matter how that manifest. We are all some sort of sex even if it is both. I like to consider myself to be the most sexist(feminist), Racist(equal rights person) and non-hetrosexual bias person possible. Just to keep me honest and overcome my brainwashing. Now I do consider myself a feminist, an equal rights, and lgbt advocate. I just hate my upbringing that was horrible so I now go to any measures possible to break the chains of bigotry due to my upbringing. So I do admit my past as much as I hate it. I remember it so I don't repeat the same mistakes. I feel like an ass for admitting this, The bullshit has to stop. I guess this is the best way to pay penance for my upbringing. I am not that Man.

DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 17, 2018:
Well one thing is certain, she sure showed everyone how holy she was! I remember one time an elder of a church started speaking in tongues. She then started to interpret them and then started to speak as if she was god. It started out praise him to praise me. love me worship me etc. I thought how lame is this. (I was actually a believer at the time) God is performing a miracle right here and now and saying nothing at all but is on a ego trip. Why is he not giving us the cure for cancer or saying, John it would be better to help your neighbor clean their floor before tomorrow or they will slip and hurt themselves, it would be a better use of that time than playing with yourself while fantasizing about Fred wife like usual. Or buy a lottery ticket with this number and start a soup kitchen. You know, useful stuff. Instead "God" bored us with an ego trip. I walked out of that church that day with more skepticism.

Let's throw gender out the window and talk about humans. Be yourself and don't worry about "how to appeal" to others. Be genuine and care about others. Do not be ashamed about who and what you are. Have genuine interest in the other person. You will be a human magnet. That really sums it up.

Welcome! this is a great place to be. Please lend your knowledge and experience. Your contributions would be very much appreciated, in particular due to your background. We do have a new "testimony" section. I will take the liberty of saying we would all like to know your story.
Hi.

Did you arrive at your decision of belief by means of research and critical thinking or merely ...
DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 17, 2018:
Christopher Hitchens "Atheism is not chosen, it is discovered." It is really not possible to honestly choose a belief. If I asked you to do your best to believe that Scooby Doo is a real living cartoon dog no matter how you tried to believe it you could not. You could pretend to or lie about it but you know that it is just a cartoon. We make assessments and come to conclusions. When I was a small child I was told God was real. I believed that my parents were not lying to me so I accepted that it was true on my understanding that my parents were truthful. When I grew up I studied the Bible as a believer. After many years I could no longer believe that it was god's words at all. I then had to evaluate it God was real at all. There was no good reason to believe that god existed. There was much research involved actually to shore up my belief. The evidence led to disbelief. Critical thinking was what sealed the deal. Personal feeling actually inhibited my ability to make a proper assessment of the facts for many years.

Does being agnostic and atheist make us less fearful?
DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 17, 2018:
I am very motivated by fear. I have found that most fear is a result of ignorance, so my greatest fear is fear itself. When I do find myself in fear of something I investigate it, once i know what I'm dealing with ,even if it is scary, I do not have irrational fear but sound reasons to be concerned and i can take appropriate actions to deal with the issue. This is why I can deny the Holy spirit(an unforgivable sin) and mean it when I say I would not want to go to heaven where it is impossible to be human, and that the abrahamic God is Evil. I have nothing to fear of what was made up by the imaginations of man. So I am not in any way immune to irrational fears, I simply approach and address my fear differently than when I was a child fundamentalist wacko. I attempt to identify those fears and address them. In this context I believe many agnostics and atheist do in fact deal with fear much better than theist, and those that do not value rational thought. Thank you for the post It is not a thought I have consciously thought of before other than to know I face my fears directly.
Why are you not religious?
DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 17, 2018:
I was so religious that I was certain that there was nothing that wasn't true about the Bible. I was completely unafraid to investigate anything I choose to "know God better" after years of investigation into many things I eventually had to admit to myself that it was a lie and I did not believe.
1 Corinthians 16:22 - "If anyone does not love the Lord—a curse be on him." wtf.
DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 17, 2018:
I think I heard this as a child, "If you don't play with me I won't be your friend anymore" love- ?? ??? ??, if any man not) Paul loves Jesus, do ye also all love Him.—?????) loves with the heart: kisses virtually by his conduct: the corresponding word to ????? is ????????, with a kiss, 1 Corinthians 16:20; for ?????? is used in the sense of kissing,http://biblehub.com/commentaries/1_corinthians/16-22.htm The word here translated love applies to the intimate and familiar personal affection subsisting between individuals, rather than the wider and more general feeling of love usually enjoined in the N. T. I curse or accursed- The word properly means accursed, or devoted to destruction; and the idea here is, that he who did not believe in the Lord Jesus, and love him, would be, and ought to be, devoted to destruction, or accursed of God. This word love is actually more literally kissing. If anyone does not kiss the lord and is intimate with him God will destroy you. Evidently God is a very insecure, Jealous, and vengeful lover type according to Paul. First Corinthians is one of the few books that are considered to be authentic by scholars, That is it is one of the rare cases that it was written by the person that it is said to have been.

Relationships with believers
DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 17, 2018:
My wife believes that she should believe. She does not actually believe in God she just pretends to and professes to because it's a good idea. I have known her for over twenty years and can tell you she actually does not believe but does not even know it. I can't tell her this, it is something she will have to discover on her own. She is so worried about social stigma I doubt she will ever give it any thought.
Odd religious excuses
DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 17, 2018:
It actually came from my wife. When she found out that my son and I were atheist she said we were going to hell. That in itself is not that odd. It's just that she has not once gone to church since i've known her for over 20 years, She has never prayed that I know of, and not once expressed any concern for the condition of our souls. She has never done or said anything ever since. She has not demonstrated any behavior that indicates she actually believes we are going to hell. In other words, she is an atheist and does not know it.

DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 17, 2018:
This is an interview that is now famous between David Silverman and Bill O'Reilly. Bill uses his own version of the God of the Gaps argument. "Tide goes in, tide goes out. you can't explain that." This is an argument of incredulity that in the above video has been easily debunked. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wb3AFMe2OQY This particular part starts at about 1 min 50 seconds.

They were laughing too hard to ever tell me what I said. Or maybe they just couldn't bring themselves to. Don't try to say buffalo in french.... Another time when in the military I met a fellow with a heavy carribean accent. I asked him where he was from. He answered with a thick Jamaican accent Florida. I said where are you originally from he repeated with an extremely heavy Jamaican accent Florida. I said where were you born? Again he answered with this non American accent Flor I da. Finally I found out that his parents were Jamaican and he simply could not help it!

I love when i worked in the government the phrase "We are investigating it." Translation there is no one actually doing anything but as long as we do no actually close the case we can claim to be doing something for he next 1000 years. This is the latitude meant to be given with "substantial progress" Yes we did have the manager look at the stairs that the wheelchair can not go up six months ago. He never looked at it before, what a breakthrough!!
Do you trust the government as a source of information?

Women = Lesser cut of meat!
DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 16, 2018:
Unfortunately according to the abrahamic religions what he says is essentially true. We tend to think of male and female as equal and opposites. This is not what the abrahamic authors believed at all. Adam was created by God in the image of God. This suggest that God was male. Eve was an inferior copy of man made from man. A female was thus looked upon as an imperfect male. This thinking is what has given us the subjugation and sexism well all have to tolerate today. (Thank You religion!) Now if you read the bible with this understanding it will make much more since.
Religion Harms Society | Michael Nugent | Oxford Union - YouTube
DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 16, 2018:
That's interesting. He sat down next to David Silverman I would not have him to have been there. The best thing he said was that the vote was about if religion does harm in society not about whether it was capable of doing good. This is often the argument made when an atheist states that religion does harm. The truth of the statement is simply ignored and justified by saying that religion can do good.
Ha. Ha Ha.
DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 16, 2018:
In that wrestling match God had to cheat because he could not best Jacob. Genesis 32 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. 26 Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” 27 The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered. 28 Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel,[a] because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.” It is also worthy of note that God did not know with whom he was wrestling. The all powerful, all knowing God did not know who he was fighting and had to cheat to break even, not even to win the fight. What an awesome god,
What Kids Are Really Learning About Slavery - The Atlantic

I would put a paycheck on the fact that none of the children were aware that if they were of the any of the Abrahamic faiths, would have known that THEIR religion actually ENDORSES slavery.
Do Christian condone everything that happen in their bible.
DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 16, 2018:
As a Young Earth Creationist, Fundamentalist, Wacko, I most certainly did. It did create a great deal of cognitive dissidence. Lets look at the virgin birth story. Mary is traditionally said to have been about 12-14 years old. A little girl. She was not asked to give birth to God's son but simply told. If we look at it from a modern perspective legally in the real world . A little girl was impregnated without her consent. This would be called rape and child molestation, and the subjugation of a female, by today's standards. I had to write that off as O.K. just because God did it. Obviously I simply could not justify Gods immoral behaviors as I got to know and understand the Bible.
Religion may alter your psychology, even if you're a non-believer
DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 16, 2018:
I have spent the last three years in a pointed effort to root out the latent unconscious beliefs that I may hold as a result of religion. It is very difficult. About two weeks ago I was in the emergency room passing a kidney stone. I said "OH God" many times that night while writhing in pain. Was I actually calling out to God? Not at all, it is part of the language ingrained in me since childhood and I was in to much pain to worry about semantics. It nonetheless was there whether i liked it or not.
Is the idea of calling someone atheist strange?
DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 16, 2018:
You are correct Dawkins is wrong on this. Due to societal external pressures we are in fact defined by what we are not. If theism was not prolific and dominating in the United States there would be no reason to make the distinction. I do in fact identify with what I am not because I have to. I am an atheist.

Well let me ask, does anyone here believe in the theory of evolution?
DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 15, 2018:
Nope I do not believe in the theory of evolution. I simply accept it as the fact it is. I do not believe in gravity either. I have been introduced to it a few times when I fell on my face during epileptic seizures. Yep its a fact.....
I've never been into prostilatizing my lack of religion, but I do try to stand up for what I believe...
DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 15, 2018:
That is exactly why I am with David Silverman in his assertion we should use the term atheist. We need to let others know we are out there.

DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 14, 2018:
It is the same concerning the argument of macro and micro evolution. Time is the issue. On a year to year basis one speaks of weather. Over a period of over hundreds of years one speaks of climate change. The strongest argument the do have that is valid, is that we can only give weather forecast that are good for about two weeks at best, so how can we determine climate change? The answer is that we can do scientific analysis of ice cores, tree rings etcetera to determine trends in climate for hundreds and thousands of years. It will be correctly asserted that these past trends do not necessarily determine the future. Just like we evolve with every generation, the changes are unnoticeable and insignificant. We can go back a year and say no evidence of evolution as humans. If we go back 100,000 years there will be noticeable differences. This being said we can not analyze data from today and say even remotely what humans will be like in another 100,000 years. What we can say is there will be human change.
A controversial one.

Why can’t religious people understand that atheism isn’t a religion?
DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 14, 2018:
What is annoying is when they are given a proper definition and simply ignore it. They are sometimes simply incredulous, however many are simply purposely misleading. More specifically this is the apologetics group.

Other than B.S., what do you think are all the fallacies of religion’s threat of HELL?
DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 14, 2018:
Atheist can do things without the expectation of reward or punishment. The threat of hell modivates by fear. If one does good things simply due to fear of self harm they can not do things out of selflessness.

Trump has an operational theory. Ask for the completely ridiculous. Then you can sound reasonable when you negotiate down to the few items you really want. He may only be targeting 3-5 items on the list. The rest is just fat to be cut away during negotiations. The question is what are the few items he does want to cut.
Is FAITH in anything absurd all the time? Do we need faith ever?
DavidLaDeau comments on Feb 14, 2018:
I am an apistevist- I do not use faith in decision making. I do trust my wife. I do not think some magical unicorn will keep her from cheating on me. She has not and does not display the propensity to cheat on me. I trust her. I do not have "faith", in her. We have been married for 20 years I have no need for wishful thinking that she will not cheat on me. I have evidence. Could circumstances change with new evidence that she did cheat on me. Even if this was the case '"faith" would have done me no good.
