How do you define agnostic, atheist, and theist?
atheist comments on Dec 22, 2017:
I have a problem with the way the word gnostic is used. Gnosticism is a belief system that emphasized revealed knowledge of the true order of the cosmos & they had a concept of god. The word gnostic gets translated as knowledge but it was a specific type of revealed knowledge. Agnostic could be ...

Yes you are absolutely correct. During the time Jesus is said to live the entire region was simply flooded with mystery religions. In fact Christianity is a mystery religion. I should answer your question a bit better. If I was to use the word literally I would be telling them I am without knowledge or ignorant. No a very good conversation starter. They did think a bit differently than we do so their minds would naturally look to the philosophical since. So they might understand I do not know if a God exist. I have not seen any writing that specifically addresses this anything I say would be speculative. What I can say is you are correct they certainly did understand hidden knowledge, it was the backbone of their religions. This is why we have parables in the bible. It is the Christian version of Gnosis or hidden knowledge. You are very intuitive.

Frankly he would have no idea what you were talking about. Gnosticism is a relatively modern term that we use to describe a very broad spectrum of Mystery religions loosely associated with Judaism and what became various Christianities that no longer exist. They were more inclined to say I am a follower of Paul's teachings or I am a follower of the Seth etc. Believe it or not most of the Roman upper class did not truly believe in God's, the worship of God's was mostly done by the lower class citizens. While I'm sure that there were many that were unsure if gods actually existed I do not know that there was a word for it.
Think VERY CAREFULLY......

Really this is too easy, particularly on a sight such as this. I would like the people of my country (why stop there) the world to simply accept reality as fact rather than embracing mysticism. It is simply unhealthy and dangerous for people to think of fairy tales as fact and live their lives based...

Lol, at one time I thought it was "reasonable" to accept any Christian dogma fed to me and to in fact reject reason!

DavidLaDeau comments on Dec 23, 2017:
I am agnostic only as I can not to claim that I know what I do not know. If God by definition can not be perceived by man, I can not claim to know he does not exist. This being said I am certain with all knowledge and experience that I have that God does not exist, thus it is more proper to call me ...
DavidLaDeau replies on Dec 24, 2017:
I do not say I "know God does not exist". That is a knowledge statement. I can not know what I by definition can not know. What I do say is that I am certain God does not exist. The difference is that by being certain I mean that there is no evidence to to support Gods existence, and that with all my knowledge and experience I am completely confident there is no God.

Please allow me to pontificate. It doesn't matter how I or you define any word. What matters is the actual definition and using the word appropriately. I should link the definitions but I'm lazy.
DavidLaDeau replies on Dec 23, 2017:
I agree with you that people should use actual definitions. The problem is when we communicate it does not matter at all what we say, but how it is understood. If the word I use is thought to mean something other than what I meant to communicate, I have none less failed to communicate.

DerekD comments on Dec 22, 2017:
Being a writer, I tend to lean towards the 'textbook' definitions. In that light, an Atheist and an Agnostic would be considered different sets of beliefs. An atheist flat out does not believe in any type of Deity, and does not consider the possibility to be plausible. An agnostic, while not seeing ...
DavidLaDeau replies on Dec 23, 2017:
It is a real pain in the butt as Atheist to have to define everything we say to theist and each other. The problem is very few theist have any idea what any of the terms we use mean. If they do "know" what we mean they are more than likely wrong about what they think we mean. In order to be understood and have conversations both parties must understand what is meant be words. We must therefore make sure the words we use are understood as we intend them. A real pain in the rear but necessary.

We must first separate Gnosticism a loose term regarding a large variety of religions, from the etymological analysis of the root word "knowledge". These are two separate subjects entirely and should not be conflated. This being said I do agree in common spoken English Agnostic should be understood as without knowledge.

I did not attempt to answer the definition of God, that was not the question. The question was concerning Agnosticism. In order to reply to that question the definitions commonly used must first be understood. Then I could answer the question of my understanding of the term Agnostic. The definition of God is sometimes used by theist to mean a being that can not be comprehend. That was important to the understanding of how the term Agnostic is used.
Which major world religion do you think is the worst and why?
daddy4pugs comments on Oct 29, 2017:
The three desert religions have been the worst throughout history, Islam is the worst at the time because of its violations of human rights, with Evangelical Christianity close behind. These comments are from a CONservative, but even a broken is clock right twice a day. ...
DavidLaDeau replies on Dec 23, 2017:
Christianity has been around 650 years longer and is still committing human rights violations. Islam does get more press in the western world, but I am in no way confident that Christianity is any better than Islam in the world today. We in the western world simply get "Christian friendly" news. Let us not forget that Nazi Germany was made up of Christians.
