I haven't seen the TV series, but I read the book and saw the 1990 film, screenplay by playwright Harold Pinter. Both are creepy as hell because of how much American society currently seems hell-bent on making this fiction reality. What makes the film even more chilling for me is that parts of it were filmed in the part of North Carolina I'm from. I recognized some locales in Raleigh, and the hanging scene takes place in front of the Duke Chapel (I'm a Duke alumnus).
