I am a retired university instructor of English language and literature, having spent the bulk of my teaching career in Asia and the Middle East. Overseas teaching definitely has a shelf life, though, so I now work on a semi-retired basis as a freelance indexer. You don’t get rich doing that, but the lack of any bosses suits me well.
Originally from North Carolina, I have lived in a small central Kentucky town for the last twenty years. Life as an atheist in the Bible Belt can be lonely, so I was happy to join this site two years ago. Things are improving here in this town, though—it finally discovered the repeal of Prohibition a few years ago, so now there are actually places to go and hang out at--that is, until the Coronavirus hit. Maybe one day, I'll be able to safely return to those places ....
My interests include travel (especially road trips), photography, craft beer, and writing. I'm also kind of a foodie and enjoy cooking the cuisines I got to know while living abroad. I'd certainly hoped to be doing more traveling during my retirement, but I suppose the silver lining of self-quarantine is that it's not only giving me plenty of time to refine my culinary skills and explore new dishes, but also to grow my own food. I'd like to get back into oil painting, and if it's ever safe to do so again, maybe take a few classes at a folk school back in North Carolina toward that end.
I have been a widower since 2010, and after nearly a decade alone, I met a wonderful woman here on this site, and we have been happily cohabiting in Kentucky since May, 2019.
