I want to know why humans have art. What is the evolutionary purpose? Agree 100% the theory of evolution has proved very sound. As close to fact as theory can be. Yet it does not explain all. It is not incorrect, but I suspect incomplete.
Druvius replies on Jun 30, 2019:
Yes, there are still some gaps in our understanding of Evolution. How speech evolved is a big one, there's still no clear understanding of how that happened, the problem of deceit should have prevented it. Fascinating though that the Evolution deniers never bring this up, usually just recycling old straw man arguments and the like. As was pointed out, Evolution deniers usually have a shallow to nonexistent understanding of the theory they are so vehemently denying.
NC lawmaker says Lincoln ‘unjustly invaded’ the South, a ‘sovereign nation’
Druvius comments on Jun 27, 2019:
There's no real question Lincoln did what he could to foment war with the Confederacy, and succeeded. How just that was is debateable, though certainly the Confederacy, sovereign or not, is nothing to be proud of.

@Paul4747 Lots of them. And he resupplied the fort hoping it would provoke the Confederates into doing just that. And even if he didn't, a few cannon shots magically justifies a war and invasion? But thanks for repeating the pop history understanding of the subject.

Druvius replies on Jun 21, 2019:
@Agnieszka Psychology is certainly more scientific than astrology, won't argue that. My point is that people love to think in stereotypes about groups, even though no matter how accurate the group stereotype is, it's easily trumped by individual variation. And this sort of story is often presented in the news in such a way as to reinforce this kind of fuzzy thinking. "I'm an introvert who loves mountains" is no more scientific than "I'm a Scorpio who loves sex." Or worse, "I love the mountains, so I must be an introvert!" Um, no. I love science, blog about it regularly; but pop science is a whole different thing. And the media rarely, if ever, makes the distinction.

Druvius replies on Jun 21, 2019:
@Agnieszka Even if this correlation is real and not a statistical artifact, doubt this is of any practical use since individual variation is going to be all over the map. That's why I compared it to Astrology, people will immediately take it personally. I don't think that's how psychology works. Thanks for the link.

If more accusers step forward, then it may get worse for Mr Tyson depending on the nature of the allegations.

The US gives out peanuts in foreign aid, and most of what we do give is grants to buy US weapons. IE just another way to give taxpayer dollars to the rich. In the case of Pakistan, it was basically bribery (combined with threats) to get them to support our war in Afghanistan, a war that was completely against Pakistan's interests. And the rioters were rioting over the shitty things Trump tweeted about Pakistan. Basically this move by Trump is childish shit that will make Pakistan less inclined to cooperate with us, plus give China and Russia more influence. More winning, yeah! LOL
