The British Invasion Era The Dave Clark Five Glad all over [youtu.be]
FearlessFly comments on Aug 2, 2020:
"Glad All Over" is a song written by Dave Clark and Mike Smith and recorded by The Dave Clark Five. In January 1964. "Glad All Over" featured Smith leading unison group vocals, often in call and response style, a saxophone line used not for solo decoration but underneath the whole song, and a big, "air hammer" beat that underpinned the wall of sound production known as the "Tottenham Sound". Dave Clark – backing vocals, drums Mike Smith – double-tracked lead/harmony vocals, Vox Continental organ Lenny Davidson – backing vocals, guitars Rick Huxley – backing vocals, bass Denis Payton – backing vocals, saxophone with Bobby Graham – drums Adrian Kerridge – engineer, co-producer

Future Islands: For Sure.
FearlessFly comments on Aug 2, 2020:
(from rollingstone.com) The track boasts a quintessential Future Islands blend of thumping drums, thick synths and a gooey bass line that anchors a swooning guitar. Frontman Samuel Herring delivers another characteristically mighty vocal performance, with Wye Oak’s Jenn Wasner providing back-up on the chorus, “I will never keep you from an open door/I know, you know/That’s how much I feel in everything you are/You know, I know.” “For Sure” arrives with a music video directed by Sam Mason. The clip follows two driver-less cars as they journey through a post-apocalyptic wasteland, where the eeriness of the crumbled landscape is balanced by darkly funny moments, like a flock of flamingos gathered on a pile of tires, or a lone inflatable air dancer still whipping in the wind on the side of the highway.

FearlessFly comments on Aug 2, 2020:
"I Am Waiting" is a song written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards that was first released on the Rolling Stones' 1966 album Aftermath. The music of the song is one of several Rolling Stones songs from this period that shows Appalachian and English folk influences. As he does on "Lady Jane," another song from Aftermath, Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones plays a dulcimer on "I Am Waiting." Jack Nitzsche plays harpsichord. Bill Wyman's slow and "eerie" bassline and the acoustic guitars add to the effect. In the song's unusual structure, the refrains are louder and rock harder than the slow verses. In Janovitz's interpretation, the harder refrains permit Jagger to "vent the frustration" that has been built up through the verses.

A singer I really like a lot is Christina Perri.
FearlessFly comments on Aug 1, 2020:
The song was included on Perri's debut EP, The Ocean Way Sessions (2010), and appeared on Perri's debut studio album, Lovestrong (2011). The song was co-written by Perri, Drew Lawrence, and Barrett Yeretsian. Perri drew inspiration for the song from a real-life experience with a love interest who wanted to rekindle a broken relationship. "Jar of Hearts" has been described as an autobiographical song for Perri, recalling an ex-boyfriend who wanted to reconnect after a tough breakup. Seeing writing duties by the song's performer Christina Perri,[clarification needed] additional writing is seen by Drew Lawrence and Barrett Yeretsian; production by the song's writers Barrett Yeretsian and Christina Perri. "Jar of Hearts" is a rock-oriented tune that is about shunning the continued advances of a former flame who was ungrateful while together, yet now wants to rekindle a failed romance.

Patti Smith - Because The Night [youtube.com]
FearlessFly comments on Jul 31, 2020:
"Because the Night" is a song written by Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith that was first released in 1978 as a single from the Patti Smith Group 1978 album Easter. Springsteen struggled with the song almost four months until his engineer, Jimmy Iovine, got involved. At the time, Iovine was also producing the album Easter for Patti Smith at the Record Plant, New York, where Darkness was being recorded at the same time. Iovine says, "Now, Bruce was very understanding and very flexible, because he realized that this was my first real break as a producer. Anyway, one night whilst we were lounging around the Hotel Navarro in New York I told Bruce I desperately wanted a hit with Patti, that she deserved one. He agreed. As he had no immediate plans to put ‘Because the Night’ on an album, I said why not give it to Patti. Bruce replied, ‘If she can do it, she can have it.’"

Though the album version was not recorded until 1990, the song was originally written in the late 1980s; it was performed live as early as 1989. The backing track was built around many samples, primarily the main riff from Herbie Hancock's track "Bring Down the Birds" from the Blowup soundtrack and Vernon Burch's "Get Up", which provided the drum track and also formed the basis for the breakdown featuring a slide whistle. Parliament-Funkadelic bassist Bootsy Collins provided guest vocals, and the rap is provided by Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest

The song was written by Debbie Cook and recorded by the lead singer of the band, Cathy Lesurf. The release was shrouded in controversy after reports that the song was actually inspired by a trip to Rhyl, another town in North Wales. It was said[by whom?] that Bangor was chosen as the lyric due to it having an extra syllable that flowed better with the song. There were rumours of an outcry among local councillors and businesses in Rhyl about the missed opportunity for tourism which would have been generated. Cook stated that the song was specifically written about Bangor.

Bedtime has come around again and tonight I’m posting an old one from Billy Joel.
FearlessFly comments on Jul 30, 2020:
Joel shared that the melody and chord progression for this song came to him while he was dreaming. In an interview on the Howard Stern Radio Show on November 16, 2010, Joel revealed that the inspiration for writing the name of the song and how it sounds in the chorus was directly taken from the last line in the Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons song "Rag Doll"; which incidentally was also a larger inspiration for Joel's later song, "Uptown Girl". The song, which Joel had written for his first wife (and also his business manager at the time) Elizabeth Weber, was not liked by either Joel or his band, and Joel had originally decided against making the track a part of The Stranger, but at the request of both Linda Ronstadt and Phoebe Snow (both were recording in other studios in the same building at the time), he agreed to put the song on the final mix.
James - Sit Down (2001 final live performance ) - YouTube
FearlessFly comments on Jul 30, 2020:
The song's lyrics were written in the autumn of 1988 as a homage to author Doris Lessing and singer Patti Smith, who had inspired the lead singer of James, Tim Booth. In an interview with Dave Simpson of The Guardian on the effect of the song, James guitarist Larry Gott stated, “Sit Down is one of those songs that encourages people to put their arms around strangers. As soon as we launch into the opening bars, they start smiling. Then they turn to someone next to them or their girlfriend or boyfriend and hug them, and then they start singing every single word. As a musician, that's incredibly humbling.”

FearlessFly comments on Jul 30, 2020:
The song was recorded at Mercury Records' Chicago-based studio. While performing it in California, the band let Stevie Wonder hear the basic track for the song and he predicted that it would become a big hit. The song is noted for its sound of a siren recorded from a fire truck, heard at the beginning, as well as in the instrumental break in the middle. The edited version avoided much of the repetition of the music. The composer of Wild Cherry's hit song "Play That Funky Music" has indicated that "Fire" was the inspiration.

"Albatross" is a guitar-based instrumental by Fleetwood Mac, released as a single in November 1968. Santo & Johnny's "Sleep Walk" (1959) reportedly inspired Peter Green for his 1968 instrumental "Albatross", although the composition also resembles Chuck Berry's 1957 instrumental "Deep Feeling", itself derivative of the 1939 recording "Floyd's Guitar Blues" by Andy Kirk and his 12 Clouds of Joy, featuring guitarist Floyd Smith. In Green's biography [Celmins 1998], an early inspiration for "Albatross" was said to have been "a group of notes from an Eric Clapton solo, played slower."[

FearlessFly comments on Jul 29, 2020:
Like the band's first album, the songs were mostly written by singer/guitarist/lyricist Gordon Gano when he was in high school. The Christian-related lyrics on Hallowed Ground were thought by some to be ironic, despite Gano being a devout Baptist. The other two members of Violent Femmes were atheists, and initially refused to perform those songs, but after their debut had been recorded, they relented and several of Gano's religion-themed songs were recorded for Hallowed Ground. Gano stated in 1989, "At the time, Brian (Ritchie) was very aggressively anti-anything Christian. He said he didn't want to be playing in a band that was expressing something that he felt so vehemently against."

[youtu.be] parkway drive "wishing wells" something a little darker this time.
FearlessFly comments on Jul 28, 2020:
(from epitath.com) Opening with ominous vocals and haunting acoustic guitar, “Wishing Wells” soon erupts into a furious and full-throttle metal assault. Captured in one shot, its starkly filmed video marks a deep departure from Parkway Drive’s usual high-production aesthetic. The video features front man Winston McCall giving a powerful close-up performance of “Wishing Wells” with fierce intensity. According to Parkway Drive—frontman Winston McCall, guitarists Luke Kilpatrick and Jeff Ling, bassist Jia O’Connor, and drummer Ben Gordon—“Wishing Wells” is a meditation on the pain and confusion of loss. “‘Wishing Wells’ is the compression of grief into song,” says McCall. “It’s attempting to place blame when there is none, seeking answers where there is only emptiness, and ultimately trying to find some kind of reason and meaning to justify the ultimate loss we will all be faced with in life. This is how this chapter begins and will end.”

I remember reading (a few years back) that there are 5 shark attacks (not deaths) world-wide yearly, yet 300 people in the US alone die yearly from bee stings ! :P

Yusuf is trying to get another album out.
FearlessFly comments on Jul 28, 2020:
Stevens, who is now known as Yusuf Islam, developed a relationship with actress Patti D'Arbanville and the two were a pair throughout a period of roughly two years. During that time, he wrote several songs about her, including "Wild World". The song is in the form of the singer's words to his departing lover, inspired by the end of their romance. Stevens later recalled to Mojo: "It was one of those chord sequences that's very common in Spanish music. I turned it around and came up with that theme—which is a recurring theme in my work—which is to do with leaving, the sadness of leaving, and the anticipation of what lies beyond."

Tonight at bedtime I’m posting Gary Barlow and Agnetha Faltskog singIng I Should Have Followed You...
FearlessFly comments on Jul 28, 2020:
"I Should've Followed You Home" is a duet sung by Swedish recording artist and ABBA member Agnetha Fältskog and British singer-songwriter and Take That frontman Gary Barlow. Written by Barlow and producer Jörgen Elofsson, it was the third single taken from A. Barlow and Elofsson have worked together in the past and recorded the song first with Barlow's vocals. Fältskog loved the track and was delighted to turn it into a duet, feeling that the two voices together were a fantastic combination. Their recording sessions happened separately so the pair did not finally meet in person until she visited London in May and the two met for the BBC documentary Agnetha: ABBA and After... which was broadcast in June.
