FearlessFly comments on May 18, 2020:
"Black Dog" is built around a call and response dynamic between the vocalist and band, with its start and stop a cappella verses inspired by Fleetwood Mac's 1969 song "Oh Well", according to biographer Dave Lewis. The title is a reference to a nameless black labrador retriever that wandered around the Headley Grange studios during recording. John Paul Jones, who is credited with writing the main riff, was inspired by Muddy Waters' controversial 1968 album Electric Mud. He added a winding riff and complex rhythm changes,[6] that biographer Keith Shadwick describes as a "clever pattern that turns back on itself more than once, crossing between time signatures as it does." The group had a difficult time with the turnaround, but John Bonham's solution was to play it straight through as if there was no turnaround.

FearlessFly comments on May 18, 2020:
"Itchycoo Park" is a song written by Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane, first recorded by their group, the Small Faces. The song was one of the first pop singles to use flanging, an effect that can be heard on the drums in the bridge section after each chorus. A number of sources claim the song's name is derived from the nickname of Little Ilford Park, on Church Road in the London suburb of Manor Park, where Small Faces' singer and songwriter Steve Marriott grew up. The "itchycoo" nickname is, in turn, attributed to the stinging nettles which grew there. Other sources cite nearby Wanstead Flats (Manor Park end) as the inspiration for the song.

FearlessFly comments on May 18, 2020:
It was composed as a love song to Jim Morrison's first serious girlfriend, Mary Werbelow, shortly after their relationship ended. The meaning of the song has been debated. The title borrows from the 12th-century Irish Lebor na hUidre (Book of the Dun Cow) manuscript. The lyrics in the opening verse resembles a conventional love song, while the later verses are vague in intention and contain more challenging imagery.

Written, arranged and produced by himself, "Again" was initially set to be on his sixth studio album, however, Kravitz found out that the song didn't fit the tone of the album, releasing it as the lead-single from the compilation on September 14, 2000 through Virgin Records. The mid-tempo rock ballad finds Kravitz wondering if he will ever see his former lover again and if they will reunite once more.

(from variety.com) Wilco mostly rose to the occasion and conjured the far-reaching voices of Woody Guthrie on “Mermaid Avenue.” Notable Tweedy adaptations include the countrified ballad “One By One” and the jovial folk-rock of “Hesitating Beauty.” The album’s most rocking song is “Hoodoo Voodoo.” It’s just a jiving little kid’s tune but the band is all in, banging it out with a riff lifted straight from “Lady Madonna.” Embracing the nonsense lyrics and topsy-turvy wordplay, Tweedy gleefully shreds his voice into a pleasing, wheezing rasp.

Cream - Stormy Monday [youtube.com]
FearlessFly comments on May 13, 2020:
"Call It Stormy Monday (But Tuesday Is Just as Bad)" (commonly referred to as "Stormy Monday") is a song written and recorded by American blues electric guitar pioneer T-Bone Walker. It is a slow twelve-bar blues performed in the West Coast blues-style that features Walker's smooth, plaintive vocal and distinctive guitar work. As well as becoming a record chart hit in 1948, it inspired B.B. King and others to take up the electric guitar. "Stormy Monday" became Walker's best-known and most-recorded song. In 1961, Bobby "Blue" Bland further popularized the song with an appearance in the pop record charts. Bland introduced a new arrangement with chord substitutions, which was later used in many subsequent renditions. His version also incorrectly used the title "Stormy Monday Blues", which was copied and resulted in royalties being paid to songwriters other than Walker. The Allman Brothers Band recorded an extended version for their first live album in 1971, with additional changes to the arrangement. Through the album's popularity and the group's concert performances, they brought "Stormy Monday" to the attention of rock audiences. Similarly, R&B singer Latimore's 1973 hit recording made it popular with a later R&B audience. "Stormy Monday" is one of the most popular blues standards, with numerous renditions. As well as being necessary for blues musicians, it is also found in the repertoires of many jazz, soul, pop, and rock performers. The song is included in the Grammy, Rock and Roll, and Blues Foundation halls of fame as well as the U.S. Library of Congress' National Recording Registry.

He based the lyrics off a late night documentary with depictions of African plight and suffering. The viewing experience made a lasting impact on Paich: "It both moved and appalled me, and the pictures just wouldn't leave my head. I tried to imagine how I'd feel about it if I was there and what I'd do." Jeff Porcaro elaborates further, explaining: "A white boy is trying to write a song on Africa, but since he's never been there, he can only tell what he's seen on TV or remembers in the past."

Sin Shake Sin - Can't Go To Hell [youtu.be] Never heard of the band until tonight & had to share
FearlessFly comments on May 13, 2020:
(from sumerianrecords.com) Unsigned, "Sin Shake Sin" managed to reach #5 on Billboard's Rock Radio Most Added charts in late 2017 with their single "Can't Go To Hell", which was also added to Sirius/XM Octane, hand picked by Spotify as their "Discovery Weekly" track, and was featured as "Pick of the Week" by both nationally syndicated radio shows "Hard Drive with Lou Brutus" and "The L.A. Lloyd Top 30 Countdown".
TEN SHARP - YOU .
FearlessFly comments on May 12, 2020:
"You" was the band's first single as a duo. The lyrics were written by Ton Groen, while the music was composed by Niels Hermes. French music author Elia Habib described the song as "the notes from the piano are sharply separated with a beautiful consistency and constitute the backdrop of a melody served by the power of Marcel Kapteijn's voice".

One of my earlier comments today referred to the still "unknown unknowns" -- this (informative but scary) video drives that point home. :O

It is hard to imagine why people don't pay enough attention to the "unknown unknowns" about this virus. :O
Once again it’s bedtime so I’m off with this post.
FearlessFly comments on May 12, 2020:
"I Close My Eyes and Count to Ten" is a song written by Clive Westlake and recorded by British singer Dusty Springfield. In the US, "I Close My Eyes..." was Springfield's final release on the Phillips label, Springfield having signed in June 1968 to have Atlantic Records be her US label of release as of that August; consequently the single was virtually ignored in the US reaching No. 122 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart in Billboard. (The US release of "I Close My Eyes..." replaced the UK B-side "No Stranger Am I" with Springfield's rendition of "La Bamba".)

I think I understand how this is a big deal in physics. I don't 'get' : "In two dimensions, the loop cannot shrink, to a point so the particle is not as constrained" . . . if the particle don't get 'stuck' in 3D why do they in 2D ?

FearlessFly comments on May 12, 2020:
"When [the album] was finished, but before it came out, [Michelob] took the song they wanted, and very quickly shot the commercial. So what happened was the commercial came out before the album. Then the LP was released and the first single which was 'Roll With It'. Six weeks later the second single was due to be released which was the song they used for the commercial. They started putting the commercial on the TV before the single was out. It looked like I had written a beer jingle!"

FearlessFly comments on May 12, 2020:
Despite rumours surrounding the song's meaning, lead singer Justin Hawkins has refuted suggestions that the lyrics pertain to pubic lice or sexually transmitted infections: "People have said it's about pubic lice, but that's obviously wrong because pubic lice don't grow on you, do they?" Hawkins has also commented on the song's true meaning: "A sweet lady woman that you will never fully fathom or understand, but you love her so much that after a while it doesn't matter."
