The Breeders - Cannonball [youtu.be]
FearlessFly comments on May 8, 2020:
The rhythm of the introduction is constructed from metallic clicking on a snare rim and cymbal stand, which is tapped out by drummer Jim McPherson. The recording contains a musical tension amounted from the drum and bass hooking up while a slithering guitar lick skips above before being overtaken by crunching guitars. The quirky musical arrangement has a relentless, rolling momentum that features frequent dynamic pauses and stuttering, start-and-stop transitions before evening out into an infectious, melodic hook layered with sweet vocal harmonies.

"Gimme Some Lovin'" is a song written by Steve Winwood, Spencer Davis and Muff Winwood, although solely credited to Steve Winwood on the UK single label, and performed by the Spencer Davis Group. As recalled by bassist Muff Winwood, the song was conceived, arranged, and rehearsed in just half an hour. At the time, the group was under pressure to come up with another hit, following the relatively poor showing of their previous single, "When I Come Home", written by Jamaican-born musician Jackie Edwards

"Rock Me Baby" is a blues standard that has become one of the most recorded blues songs of all time. It originated as "Rockin' and Rollin'", a 1951 song by Lil' Son Jackson, itself inspired by earlier blues. Renditions by Muddy Waters and B.B. King made the song well-known.

Procol Harum. - Conquistador. Remastered copy. [youtu.be]
FearlessFly comments on May 8, 2020:
The song's lyrics were written by Keith Reid, and its music was composed by Gary Brooker, who also sang. It was featured on the band's 1967 album, Procol Harum. The song is unusual in that the music was written before the lyrics; according to Reid, "99 out of 100 of those Procol Harum songs were written the words first, and then were set to music." He explained that Brooker had written a piece of Spanish-flavored music before the band had officially formed, and Reid decided to write lyrics about a conquistador.

"Mr. Moonlight" is a song written by Roy Lee Johnson, best known for being covered by the Beatles on the 1964 albums Beatles for Sale in the United Kingdom and Beatles '65 in the United States. The Beatles had covered the song in their live act for years before it appeared on record. Their recording features Latin-style percussion, prominent vocal harmonies, and, unusually, an organ solo. John Lennon sings lead, with backing vocals from Paul McCartney and George Harrison.
The Killers. - Mr.Brightside. Live Glasgow 2018. [youtu.be]
FearlessFly comments on May 7, 2020:
It was released as the band's debut single and is featured on their debut studio album Hot Fuss (2004). Written by band members Brandon Flowers and Dave Keuning, this was one of the first songs the Killers ever wrote. Lyrically, "Mr. Brightside" depicts the jealousy and paranoia of a man who suspects his significant other is cheating on him. Guitarist Dave Keuning composed the music before meeting Flowers. Flowers then wrote lyrics and composed the chorus after hearing Keuning's ideas. Flowers credits the speed of the song's creation due to it having only one verse. He says, "We went in and made demos pretty quickly after that, and it took a ton of time. That's also why there's not a second verse... I just didn't have any other lines and it ended up sticking."

The song was initially written for a woman as "Can't Help Falling in Love with Him", which explains the first and third line ending on "in" and "sin" rather than words rhyming with "you"

Halford commented to Tipton that he was "really living after midnight", and Tipton replied that Halford's comment was a great title for the song he was working on.

The song was recorded at Rancho De La Luna, Joshua Tree, California,[3] and featured in the fifth episode of the band's HBO documentary Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways. It features Joe Walsh as guest guitarist and also Chris Goss. The collaboration with Walsh came about through a mutual friend, he explained to Billboard magazine that: "I know them, my drummer when I play solo, Drew Hester, is a great friend of all of those guys, so I hooked up through him". Foo Fighters' drummer Taylor Hawkins told Q magazine that he thought Walsh's guitar solo on "Outside" was the champagne moment on the Sonic Highways album. Justin Hayward said that he wrote the song on a Tuesday afternoon in Lypiatt Park, in western England near Stroud. Hayward's mother had taken him and his brother to the park while they were growing up, and he revisited the park during the production of Days of Future Passed to write the song. Justin Hayward wrote the song originally intending to name it "Tuesday Afternoon". At the insistence of producer Tony Clarke, it was named "Forever Afternoon (Tuesday?)" for its release on Days of Future Passed. However, when it was released as a single a year later, its name was changed back to "Tuesday Afternoon" and it has been more commonly known by this name ever since. Some of the Moody Blues compilation and live albums list the song as "Tuesday Afternoon (Forever Afternoon)" to reflect both titles.

FearlessFly comments on May 5, 2020:
(from metal-archives.com) "Before the Dawn" is the long-forgotten ballad off Killing Machine. It’s strange nobody seems to know this one; its sharp contrast with the rest of the album seems to me like it would cause people to remember it. Alas, this isn’t so, and the song has unfairly dropped under the horizon. What is immediately noticeable is the lack of drums. It’s not often Priest scraps the drums (actually, I don’t recall any other such songs) and so this is a unique song in itself. “Before the Dawn” also makes use of soulful acoustic guitar that mostly replaces the usual electric fare used on similar songs like “Beyond the Realms of Death,” though a nice electric brooder of a solo permeates through the darkness. The bass is nothing to write home about, but it wouldn’t be the same song if Ian Hill hadn’t contributed his part.

"Leather and Lace" is a song performed by American singers Stevie Nicks and Don Henley. It was released on October 6, 1981 as the second single from Nicks' solo debut studio album Bella Donna (1981). Nicks wrote the song for Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter's duet album Leather and Lace, but the song was not included on the album.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Ohio (remember 4 May 1970) [youtu.be]
FearlessFly comments on May 3, 2020:
"Ohio" is a protest song and counterculture anthem written and composed by Neil Young in reaction to the Kent State shootings of May 4, 1970, and performed by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Young wrote the lyrics to "Ohio" after seeing the photos of the incident in Life Magazine. On the evening that CSN&Y entered Record Plant Studios in Los Angeles, the song had already been rehearsed, and the quartet—with their new rhythm section of Calvin Samuels and Johnny Barbata—recorded it live in just a few takes. During the same session, they recorded the single's equally direct B-side, Stephen Stills's ode to the war's dead, "Find the Cost of Freedom."

FearlessFly comments on May 3, 2020:

FearlessFly comments on May 3, 2020:
Lyrically, the song is about items that the band members of Cake hate. John McCrea said of the song, "It's about how when you hate things, the circle of hate starts rather broadly. You hate the President or a big movie star, someone you'll probably never meet. Gradually though, the circle tightens and the objects of hate get closer and closer to the hater. Now it's your uncle or your mother, now it's your close friend, and finally it's you. Bummer."

FearlessFly comments on May 3, 2020:
The song (originally intended as a demo) was arranged by Artie Butler and produced by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich. It was issued as a 45 single in 1966 and became Diamond's first big hit. Greenwich came up with the chorus and can be heard as the prominent background voice, accompanied by Jeff Barry. Diamond has stated that the song was inspired by an early relationship with a significantly older woman.

FearlessFly comments on May 3, 2020:
"Maybe" is a song with words and music originally credited to End Records owner George Goldner and "Casey". The co-writing credit was later transferred to Richard Barrett. Arlene Smith, lead singer of the Chantels, is believed to be an uncredited co-writer. It was first recorded by the Chantels on October 16, 1957, in a doo-wop style with Barrett playing piano, and released in December 1957.
It should go without saying, but as we do more testing, we find more cases, and more deaths.

Happy birthday, James Brown Papa's got a brandnew bag [youtu.be]
FearlessFly comments on May 3, 2020:
It won Brown his first Grammy Award, for Best Rhythm & Blues Recording. Consolidating the rhythmic innovations of earlier James Brown recordings such as "I've Got Money" and "Out of Sight", "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" is considered seminal in the emergence of funk music as a distinct style. As Brown sings the praises of an old man brave enough to get out on the dance floor of a nightclub ("brand new bag" meaning new interest, taste, or way of doing something), his band provides a horn-heavy backdrop with a prominent rhythm and an electric guitar riff for a hook. Both singer and musicians place overwhelming emphasis on the first beat of each measure ("on the One"). The song is Brown's first recording to feature Jimmy Nolen on guitar.

FearlessFly comments on May 3, 2020:
Bryan Adams has said of the song: "That was the last song written for the record, and it’s about getting motivated, about getting up and do something with yourself. But it’s also about the idea that the grass is always greener on the other side. Or is it?" The music video, directed by Adams, features British actress Helena Bonham Carter and Theo Hutchcraft.
