It was their first single from the album of the same name and was released in early 1988. It achieved success in many European countries. A Roland D-50 was used on this song—the sound patch is called "Staccato Heaven"—the wind sound during the instrumental was made on either a Roland Juno 60 or Juno 106 synthesizer. The versions on the 7" vinyl and the 3" CD single ("7 inch Version") are identical to the album version. A-ha played the song at Oslo Spektrum on 21 August 2011, performing for a national memorial service dedicated to the victims of the 2011 Norway attacks.

OSF (formerly OSI) is funded by George Soros, so likely a left-leaning bias. There are so few "fake news" metrics and 'judges of same'. The kudos for Finland come from OSIS in Sofia, Bulgaria. Earlier I have advocated NewsGuard browser extension (journalists rating journalism, who better to do so, but it is now subscription based), although having it installed I still see the green/grey/red indicators for the websites that have been rated by them. I would like to see MORE (and ubiquitous) "fake news" rating(s), especially from journalist-credible sources.

ANZAC Day Eric Bogle The Band Played Waltzing Matilda. [youtube.com]
FearlessFly comments on Apr 24, 2020:
"And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" is a song written by Scottish-born Australian singer-songwriter Eric Bogle in 1971. The song describes war as futile and gruesome, while criticising those who seek to glorify it. This is exemplified in the song by the account of a young Australian serviceman who is maimed during the Gallipoli Campaign of the First World War. The protagonist, who had travelled across rural Australia before the war, is emotionally devastated by the loss of his legs in battle. As the years pass he notes the death of other veterans, while the younger generation becomes apathetic to the veterans and their cause. At its conclusion, the song incorporates the melody and a few lines of lyrics of the 1895 song "Waltzing Matilda" by Australian poet Banjo Paterson.

"When the War Is Over" is a power ballad of Australian band Cold Chisel from their 1982 album Circus Animals. The song was written by drummer Steve Prestwich and issued as the third single from the album. Guitarist Ian Moss sings lead vocal on the first two verses, with the band's regular lead vocalist Jimmy Barnes singing the third. Moss described the song as, "a pretty fine example of Steve's songwriting. It all seems fairly straight ahead and easy when you hear it, like all good things are. It's so simple, but so effective." Don Walker said, "I didn't see the potential in it at the time. I thought, 'another ballad.' Since then, I know from the reaction when we play it live, this is one of the most loved songs that we did."

Here's another Stones song ... just released today ... first new song in years [youtube.com]
FearlessFly comments on Apr 24, 2020:
(from stereogum.com) Mick Jagger and Keith Richards co-wrote the Stones’ new single “Living In A Ghost Town.” It’s a spiky, bluesy number, and it’s the Stones’ first new single since they dropped “Doom And Gloom” and “One More Shot” on the 2012 compilation GRRR! (The Stones did release the album Blues & Lonesome in 2016, but that one was all blues covers. This one is a new song.) The band started recording the song at studios in Los Angeles and London, but they finished it up in isolation. It’s worth discussing whether anyone needs a new Rolling Stones album at this late date, but “Living In A Ghost Town,” while still being plenty produced, rocks harder than you might expect a new Stones song to rock. In a press release, Richards says, “Shit hit the fan Mick and I decided this one really needed to go to work right now, and so here you have it.”

The Rolling Stones - Dead Flowers [youtube.com]
FearlessFly comments on Apr 23, 2020:
"Dead Flowers" is a song written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. "Dead Flowers" was written during the period when the Stones were stepping into country territory, when Richards's friendship with Gram Parsons was influencing his songwriting. Jagger commented in 2003: The 'Country' songs we recorded later, like "Dead Flowers" on Sticky Fingers or "Far Away Eyes" on Some Girls, are slightly different (than our earlier ones). The actual music is played completely straight, but it's me who's not going legit with the whole thing, because I think I'm a blues singer not a country singer – I think it's more suited to Keith's voice than mine. Both Richards and Mick Taylor contribute the 'honky-tonk' style lead guitar lines throughout the album version. Richards's choppier fills act primarily as a response to Jagger's vocal lines during the verses, while Taylor's more fluid licks counteract with the vocals of the chorus. It is Taylor who performs the guitar solo in place of a third verse.
Green day - brain stew
FearlessFly comments on Apr 23, 2020:
"Brain Stew" and "Jaded" are two songs released as a joint single by American punk rock band Green Day. They appear as the tenth and eleventh tracks and third single from the group's fourth studio album, Insomniac. The song was also included on Godzilla: The Album. The two songs were released as one single, as the songs are transitional - "Brain Stew" segues directly into "Jaded". After 9/11, "Brain Stew" was placed on Clear Channel's list of post-9/11 inappropriate titles. The song "Brain Stew" is about Armstrong dealing with insomnia. According to Armstrong himself, "Brain Stew" was originally called "Insomniac" on demo (hence the title of the album on which it is featured), and "Brain Stew" is a reference to Armstrong's long-time friend, James Washburn, who is nicknamed Brain Stew.

"Romeo and Juliet" is a song by the British rock band Dire Straits, written by frontman Mark Knopfler. It first appeared on the 1980 album Making Movies. The original recording of the song has been featured in several motion pictures, including Hot Fuzz, Empire Records, Can't Hardly Wait, and I, Tonya. The song itself, written by Knopfler, was inspired by his failed romance with Holly Vincent, lead singer of the short-lived band Holly and The Italians. The song speaks of a Romeo who is still very much in love with his Juliet, but she now treats him like "just another one of [her] deals". Knopfler has both stated and implied that he believes Vincent was using him to boost her career. The song's line "Now you just say, oh Romeo, yeah, you know I used to have a scene with him," refers to an interview with Vincent, where she says "What happened was that I had a scene with Mark Knopfler and it got to the point where he couldn't handle it and we split up."

Sanford, who later played on sessions for Elvis Presley, Don Williams and many others, played the intro guitar. Williams introduced him as a kid who had just arrived in Nashville, with a borrowed guitar, who heard Orbison was minus a guitar player, went over and got the gig. Other musicians on the record included Floyd Cramer on piano, Henry Strzelecki on upright bass, Boots Randolph and Charlie McCoy on saxophones, Buddy Harman on drums, and Paul Garrison on percussion. FearlessFly comments on Apr 22, 2020:
"Somebody to Love" is a song by the British rock band Queen, written by the lead singer/pianist Freddie Mercury. It debuted on the band's 1976 album A Day at the Races and also appears on their 1981 compilation album Greatest Hits. Written by Mercury at the piano, "Somebody to Love" is a soul-searching piece that questions God's role in a life without love. Through voice layering techniques, Queen was able to create the soulful sound of a 100-voice choir from three singers: Mercury, Brian May, and Roger Taylor. John Deacon did not sing backing vocals on the recorded album. Mercury's fascination and admiration for Aretha Franklin was a major influence for the creation of this song.

He enlisted the help of roadie Robert Kim Payne to complete the song's lyrics. He and Payne broke into Capricorn Sound Studios to complete a demo of the song. FearlessFly comments on Apr 22, 2020:
"In the Summer Time" was a maxi single, playing at 33-1/3 rpm, whereas singles generally played at 45 rpm. It included an additional song also written and composed by Dorset, "Mighty Man," on the A-side, and a much longer track, the Woody Guthrie song "Dust Pneumonia Blues," on the B-side. As the record was sold in a picture sleeve, also not standard at the time, and only sold at a few pence more than the normal 45 rpm two-track single, it was considered value for money. A small quantity of 45 rpm discs on the Pye record label, with "Mighty Man" on the B-side, and without a picture sleeve, were pressed for use in jukeboxes. These are now rare collector's items.

Though the song has long been termed a "working class anthem", George Young maintained it had "more to do with their outlook on the world than any class statement". According to Harry Vanda, the track's distinctive guitar opening was inspired by a film performance featuring the Swingle Singers: "It went tudutudutudu, which made us all laugh. In the train back from the gig, we were imitating them and suddenly it sounded good. They became the first notes of 'Friday on My Mind'."

"Wind of Change" is a power ballad by the West German rock band Scorpions, recorded for their eleventh studio album, Crazy World (1990). The song was composed and written by the band's lead singer Klaus Meine and produced by Keith Olsen and the band. The lyrics were composed by Meine during the band's visit to the USSR at the height of perestroika, when the enmity between the communist and capitalist blocs subsided concurrently with the promulgation of large-scale socioeconomic reforms in the USSR. The lyrics celebrate glasnost in the Soviet Union, the end of the Cold War, and speaks of hope at a time when tense conditions had arisen due to the fall of Communist-run governments among Eastern Bloc nations beginning in 1989. The Scorpions were inspired to write the song after performing at the Moscow Music Peace Festival in August 1989, and the opening lines refer to the city's landmarks: I follow the Moskva Down to Gorky Park Listening to the wind of change The Moskva is the name of the river that runs through Moscow (both the city and the river are named identically in Russian), and Gorky Park is an urban park in Moscow named after the writer Maxim Gorky. "Snoopy vs. the Red Baron" is a novelty song written by Phil Gernhard and Dick Holler and recorded in 1966 by the Florida-based pop group The Royal Guardsmen. The Royal Guardsmen went on to record several other Snoopy-themed songs, including two follow-ups to "Snoopy vs. the Red Baron" – "The Return of the Red Baron" and "Snoopy's Christmas" – together with other tunes such as "Snoopy for President". In 2006 they released "Snoopy vs Osama". The song's chorus refers to "the bloody Red Baron". As "bloody" is considered a mild expletive in Australia, and some other English-speaking countries, the word was censored (by being "bleeped out") for radio airplay in Australia during the 1960s.

"A House Is Not a Home" is a 1964 ballad recorded by American singer Dionne Warwick, and written by the team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David for the 1964 film of the same name, starring Shelley Winters and Robert Taylor. The song was recorded by R&B/soul singer-songwriter Luther Vandross on his 1981 debut album Never Too Much. The track, which was recorded at seven minutes long, was released as a single and became an R&B hit, and later one of Vandross's signature songs. His performance of the song at the 1988 NAACP Awards telecast would bring Warwick to tears.

"For the Good Times" is a song written by Kris Kristofferson, first recorded by singer Bill Nash in 1968 before appearing on Kristofferson's own debut album in April 1970. After a recording by Ray Price became a number-one hit single in June of that year, the song established Kristofferson as one of country and popular music's top songwriters while giving Price his first chart-topping country and western song in 11 years. "For the Good Times" continued to be recorded by a number of artists in subsequent years, to popular success. The song became a staple of soul singer Al Green's concert repertoire in the 1970s, also featuring as a studio recording on his 1972 album I'm Still in Love with You. A version by Perry Como spent 27 weeks on the UK Singles Chart peaking at #7 in August 1973.
Clarence Garlow - Bon Ton Roulet [youtube.com] Fat Tuesday peeps! Let the good times roll!
FearlessFly comments on Apr 19, 2020:
"Bon Ton Roula" (alternatively "Bon Ton Roulet") is a zydeco-influenced blues song first recorded by Clarence Garlow in 1949. "Bon ton roula" (pronounced "bahn tahn roolay") is a phonetical approximation of "bons temps rouler", Louisiana Creole French for "good times roll" as in "Laissez les bons temps rouler" or "Let the good times roll", a regional invitation to join in a festive celebration. A song with a similar theme, "Let the Good Times Roll", was recorded by Louis Jordan in 1946, that became a R&B chart hit.

Currently my favorite of all the Songs Around the World Higher Ground [youtu.be]
FearlessFly comments on Apr 19, 2020:
"Higher Ground" is a funk song written by Stevie Wonder which first appeared on his 1973 album Innervisions. The song lyrics address the issue of reincarnation. Wonder commented, when interviewed by The New York Times: I would like to believe in reincarnation. I would like to believe that there is another life. I think that sometimes your consciousness can happen on this earth a second time around. For me, I wrote "Higher Ground" even before the accident. But something must have been telling me that something was going to happen to make me aware of a lot of things and to get myself together. This is like my second chance for life, to do something or to do more, and to value the fact that I am alive.

Given the uncertainty of Covid, this "old fart" will likely request "absentee ballot" for the first time this year (apply begins May 13 in MN). Good for OR. Has there been efforts to convince skeptics that there has not-yet been more than insignificant issues ? Even Politifact says the potential is greater for mail-in voting. https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2020/apr/09/donald-trump/donald-trumps-dubious-claim-thousands-are-conspiri/
