"Soul Sacrifice" was one of Santana's earliest compositions. Carlos Santana recalled the group wrote it when bassist David Brown joined. It has been described as "a perfect example of the amalgam of old-world guaguanco rhythms and strictly American licks" and includes "interplay between Santana and [Gregg] Rolie ... hammered home by [Mike] Carabello's and [Jose 'Chepito'] Areas' congas and the sinuous drums and bass of [Mike] Shrieve and Brown"

KIRK WHALUM. SPEND MY LIFE WITH YOU. [youtube.com]
FearlessFly comments on Feb 9, 2020:
(from wwbw.com) Q : When you were preparing yourself for a life in music, did you study much classical saxophone? KW: I did. In college mostly, and I really fell in love with it and still to this day I do a lot of the repertoire, still work on it. I’ll perform it, but a lot of the etudes and stuff, that’s a big part of my practice routine and it absolutely seeps into my playing. Especially the Slonimsky, all that stuff a lot of the jazz guys borrowed from the classical world. When I went to college in the mid-1970s, the average liberal arts college that had a jazz program, it still wasn’t considered quite legit. Like if you got a degree in Performance you were going to be playing, performing classical music—end of discussion. That has changed drastically so that now you can go to college and get a, quote-unquote legit degree in an instrument and you will never, maybe ever play a classical etude or a classical sonata or whatever.

[youtu.be] Happy birthday to Travis Tritt. One of the best singers ever
FearlessFly comments on Feb 9, 2020:
The narrator speaks of a former significant other who regrets leaving him, and now wants to include herself in his life once again. However, the narrator no longer trusts her because of her actions. In response, he gives her a quarter (in 1991, the common price for a local pay telephone call) and tells her to phone someone else who cares to listen. When Travis would play this song live, fans would often throw quarters on stage, many hitting him.

The song is one of the most melancholy in the Temptations repertoire, with lead singer David Ruffin delivering, in a pained voice, the story of a heartbroken man who wants to hide his sorrow. The single's first pressing was labelled simply "Tomorrow", then lengthened later. When first presented with the song, lead singer Shirley Owens (later known as Shirley Alston-Reeves) did not want to record it, because she thought it was "too country." She relented after a string arrangement was added. However, Owens recalled on Jim Parsons' syndicated oldies radio program, Shake Rattle Showtime, that some radio stations had banned the record because they had felt the lyrics were too sexually charged.

"Don't Bring Me Down" was one of a series of Animals renditions of Brill Building material. "She Moved Through the Fair" (or "She Moves Through the Fair") is a traditional Irish folk song, which exists in a number of versions and has been recorded many times. The narrator sees his lover move away from him through the fair, after telling him that since her family will approve, "it will not be long, love, till our wedding day". She returns as a ghost at night, and repeats the words "it will not be long, love, till our wedding day", intimating her own tragic death (possibly at the hands of her disapproving family), as well as the couple's potential reunion in the afterlife.

[youtu.be] Simple Minds. - Belfast Child...was number 1 in the UK charts this day in 1989.
FearlessFly comments on Feb 7, 2020:
The song uses the music from the Irish folk song "She Moved Through the Fair", but has completely different words. Jim Kerr recalled in 1000 UK Number 1 Hits why he used the melody, "I first heard the melody (of She Moved Through The Fair) a few days after the Enniskillen bombing (when a bomb planted by the IRA exploded during a Remembrance Day service at Enniskillen in County Fermanagh, killing 12 people and injuring at least 63), and like everybody when you see the images I was sick. In the second part of the song, I'm trying to relate to people in Northern Ireland who lost loved ones. I'm trying to talk about the madness, the sadness and the emptiness. I'm not saying I have any pearls of wisdom, but I have a few questions to ask".

The Logical Song by Roger Hodgson [youtube.com]
FearlessFly comments on Feb 5, 2020:
"The Logical Song" is a 1979 song performed by the English rock group Supertramp, the lyric based on his experience of being sent away to boarding school for ten years. Hodgson has said of the song's meaning: "'The Logical Song' was born from my questions about what really matters in life. Throughout childhood we are taught all these ways to be and yet we are rarely told anything about our true self. We are taught how to function outwardly, but not guided to who we are inwardly. We go from the innocence and wonder of childhood to the confusion of adolescence that often ends in the cynicism and disillusionment of adulthood. In 'The Logical Song,' the burning question that came down to its rawest place was 'please tell me who I am,' and that's basically what the song is about. I think this eternal question continues to hit such a deep chord in people around the world and why it stays so meaningful."
