What is our relationship with nature ?
Fernapple comments on Jun 25, 2021:
No I can see the same problem. One part of it of course is the inherited cultural dogma, that there are only two sexes, which is not true even of nature, where all manner of hermaphrodites have always and always did exist. And that everyone has to have just one of those two sexes, why not three or four ? Say a birth sex, the one entered on your birth certificate, a genetic sex determined by your genetics (of which there should be about five natural ones ), which could be used for sports, and a self defined sex, the one you choose for yourself which goes no your passport say.
We had a request for more meaningful discussions.
Fernapple comments on Jun 24, 2021:
The problem with that is that, when governments fail to deliver on that promise, (which is not a new one ), though corruption and/or incompetence. They always look for someone to take the blame away from themselves, and the easy target is foreigners. War and conflict have never been about threats from abroad, at least never on both sides, but always about failings at home, and the need to divert attention from those. It always has been and always will be.

Why should the word "atheist" even exist?
Fernapple comments on Jun 22, 2021:
It is a very badly used word in many cases, since most, so called, atheists, are actually what you could call asupernaturalists or anti-suprernaturalists, since they do not believe in any thing supernatural, nor any, none theist religions, like Buddhism, Spiritualism or Animism either. So that it could well be that we a conceding to theist imperialism, since they are trying to pretend that only theist religion, (god belief ) matters.

Fernapple comments on Jun 21, 2021:
How very silly. Our perceived world is a model constructed by our brains, based on information they receive from our senses, why would there ever have been any reason to suppose that that it was ever anything but a model ? The model may be an accurate representation, of certain things, especially things having qualities, such as a certain size and temperature ranges, which makes them liable to affect the survival of an African ape. But no one would ever have reason to suppose that the model was ever anything but a representation and one of limited scope, or conversely that a representation is not itself a part of reality. Which is actually all rather wonderful.

Has anyone heard something like, " Progressive Christians are going to hell"?
Fernapple comments on Jun 19, 2021:
Ask yourself, which hell. The hell of endless rebirth foreseen by Hindu and Buddhist believers, the hell of limited immortality of the classical world, the never mentioned hell of Judaism, the none existent hell of may hunter gatherer societies, or the hell Christians send you to, if you join one of a thousand wrong sects. Consider this. The idea of a God, who sends people to eternal suffering for finite crimes, often quite trivial crimes, and crimes of which many of them could have no knowledge, or could not avoid. Is an idea which belittles God. Even a badly behaved three year old, could devise a better morality, and carry it out better than that. And if God does exist, then how can comparing him to an incompetent three year old be a good way to win its favour. Said one - "Folks of a surly Master tell, And daub his Visage with Smoke of Hell: They talk of some sharp Trial of us -Pish ! He's a good Fellow, and "twill all be well And if that seems a little flip, then sorry but it is a very silly subject. You may like to watch this video however, it only a quarter hour, then put behind you the idea of at least a trivial silly evil God for life. Even if you do not abandon belief in god at least don't set up a trivial silly one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttevamkS6gw&t=75s

For those of you who don't trust anyone, how do you handle your trust issues?
Fernapple comments on Jun 17, 2021:
Usually I follow a system of always trusting everyone completely, until they let me down, and then I do not trust them again. Since I figure that I am strong enough to take one hit, and that until then, I can give the benefit of the doubt. And the vast majority of people prove quite good. Obviously though, there are occasions, such as when buying and selling when it is the accepted normal to not trust, and there is then no shame to you, or insult to them, in playing safe by following the formal rules, which I always do. However, I never trust anyone in the public arena, since I automatically assume that without a personal relationship, there is no basis for trust. And I never forget that most people are dishonest with themselves all the time, dishonesty (cognitive dissonance) being the human default, and the main key to the human condition. ( Birds fly, rabbits tunnel, lions are strong, fish swim, hounds run fast, but lying is the special human skill and adaption which sets us apart from all the other animals. ) So that if you can be dishonest even with yourself, then it is unlikely that you will alter your behavior for others.

Fernapple comments on Jun 10, 2021:
I would define common sense as, the flip side to the, ad populum fallacy. In other words, certain axioms of life which are so widely accepted, that they are usually regarded as common to all people, basically true, and only to be questioned under extreme circumstances. For example. The idea that a person with a hidden agenda, and/or a person likely to profit from a judgment going one way rather than another, is less likely to make an accurate and unbiased judgment than a disinterested person. As in. "John says that United and Co. make the best groundhog bum wipes." "Yes but to apply a little common sense. John was employed by United and Co. for many years, and probably has his pension with them."

Having thoughts about the connections between D.
Fernapple comments on Jun 7, 2021:
At certain levels DNA could be said to provide some simple animals with their intelligence, especially single celled animals which do not have brains or nervous systems. Many amoeba have very large genomes, which give them the powers to respond to many things, like chemical changes in the water in which they live. But when once you have multicellular life which develop a neural network, then that largely bypasses DNA as a provider of thinking. However body chemistry can deeply effect the way our brains work, but the actions of DNA are only one component in that, things like digesting sugar and alcohol, have perhaps more rapid and dramatic effects. DNA does of course determine to a large extent, the type of brain and neural network you get in the first place. There is undoubtedly a genetic element behind intelligence, if that is what you mean. And things like autism and Alzhiemer's may be in part genetic. Amusingly, I am also told that several studies have shown that there is a correlation, in males only, not women. Between intelligence and the gene which controls body hair. So that if you are a man, and you don't feel the need to shave your chest, then you can give up on the Nobel Prize, its just not going to happen. Einstein was furry. LOL
Just a passing thought.

Fernapple comments on Jun 7, 2021:
If you have an inerrant code to work from, then you gain two benefits. Firstly, you do not have to make any effort or think about any issues, address any moral questions, or find the strength to live with uncertainties. It is the ultimate, lazy and cowardly, get-out. While secondly, if you pick as your inerrant source a book, which is mixed up and ambiguous, complex and compiled from the writings of hundreds of authors, over centuries, then you can find in it justification for anything you want to believe just by picking the bits you want, or interpreting them. Yet you can then however claim that whatever you wish, has far greater authority than anyone else's opinion, because it is backed by an inerrant source, perhaps directly from god. You may notice that these two are in complete contradiction, and the second is not even logical anyway. But if you take a book which tells everyone they are correct on everything, however wrong they may be, and confirms that, by using its imagined absolute authority, then it is likely to be popular.
Is there a pseudoscience you absolutely hate? Why?
Fernapple comments on Jun 6, 2021:

I have thought of selling and getting a pair of tiny houses or living van/box/whatevers in two locations. So that I can escape the lousy and endless British winter for two thirds of the year, and come back for the summer, but then I think if I had two locations, would I give up traveling, which I love, and just go back and forth between the two. So perhaps stay where I am, and just buy a touring van and go traveling in the winter, when I retire ?
