These sort of posts are usually greeted here with a tsunami of modesty, (often fake PC modesty ). But I ask you to think on this and tell it to your religious friends if needed. Most people are born into a religion, therefore most sceptics have left a religion, and the reason for doing so is, usually, lack of evidence. But the 'motivation' for taking such a large and often difficult step, is most often moral feelings. Therefore there is a clear case for claiming that in most cases sceptics have finer and stronger moral instincts, because of the clear action they have taken.

Yes I agree with Wangobango3 the rotating barrels may work well, but if not then you would be better with any sort of bin, the bigger the better. The more vollume you can pile up the better it works, especially if you can keep it loose and moist but not wet, turning is almost magically good and pleasant exersize for the body too.

Coronavirus craziness.
Fernapple comments on Feb 26, 2020:
Yes that is often the case, and your health advice is really good. Though it was a feature of the 1918 flu that many people had an immunity to it, because it was related to other, milder, flu viruses, and if you had contracted one of those in the previous decades, then you had a degree of immunity. Which is why it mainly killed people in the the under thirties age group, because they had less often been exposed to related viruses. Coronavirus however is said to be unrelated to any other, we may have encountered before, so that it will probably strike at random, with the old and weak being most at risk.

"We seldom stray far from the topic of religion on this site." I am sorry to say is not really true, it is a consequence of having specialist groups that they remove most of the members other interests from the front page, leaving only the single common interest behind. To find out how wide the site is you really have to delve into the groups, though sadly since the site is small it means that many of them are under active.

Fernapple comments on Feb 24, 2020:
You have to remember that if you read posts and comments here on this site, then it is atheists and agnostics talking to one another, most of the posts and comments here are not intended for the religious. Having said that what you say is perfectly true, and well understood by the churches. That is why many of them send out members to do missionary work and try to find converts, especially to do missionary work in the most annoying ways possible, because that way they are bound to meet with hostility and abuse from the public. Which reinforces the view, that the church is the only source of friendship and comfort, and thereby helps to deepen indoctrination.
Spent time in a cult, I don’t feel bad about it, it was a learning experience.
Fernapple comments on Feb 24, 2020:
There are virtually no techniques of destructive mind control and brain washing, known to totalitarian states and their secret police, that the churches do not use every day without ever being questioned. From the destruction of peoples self esteem, to alienation from mainstream culture, personal isolation and repetition of indoctrination.

Why Is It Difficult to Get Christians to Care About the Earth? | Sojourners
Fernapple comments on Feb 21, 2020:
It is no accident that the Abrahamic religions all began in a region of the Middle East, where nature was at its most bleak and hostile, and therefore only human culture was seen as benign. Making human culture, which in those days and places meant, paternal authoritarian culture, all powerful. The other reason why religious people do not care about the environment, is simply because, they don't care, full stop. Religion is essentially a selfish pursuit, 'my' relationship with god, 'my' church, 'my' salvation, 'my' immortality and 'my' spiritual life, it therefore only attracts selfish and shallow people, there may be exceptions but not generally.

Have you ever thought of religion and communism as not being that different?
Fernapple comments on Feb 19, 2020:
Political ideologies and religions may share many things in common, but that does not make them the same things. A car has an engine and wheels, so does a plane, but that does not make a car a plane, because to be a plane it also needs wings. A political ideology is not a religion, because to be a religion you also need to have a belief in supernatural authority behind the ideas.

Move on, some people are not worth wasting good emotion on. They are usually the same people who want to argue forever about the definition of words, as though word were fixed things with meanings that contain truths in themselves, instead of flexible things with usages which morph all the time, and are only misleading lables used in vague and poor attempts to express aproximations to truth. Some of the self identified agnostics are in any case, borderline religious appologists, attempting to hide their true colours.

In making this post, I am not being highly critical, but merely making an observation.
Fernapple comments on Feb 17, 2020:
Yes, I usually advise people who are new to the site to check out the groups, for that reason. But sadly, even I, often end up browsing the main forum, simply because, the site is not quite big enough ( hopefully yet ) to support a lot of the specialist groups at a good and highly active level. So, off I go again trawling the main forum, through the same old religious and political posts in, often vain, search of something different this time. BUT having said that.. A lot of the people who come newly to this site are looking for help, or to vent, and have just started on their journey into the secular world. It is wrong not to offer a helping hand, to those behind you when asked. And secondly, religion does a lot of harm in the world, it is therefore a moral duty, like it or not, for those who have escaped it and believe in a humanist morality, it to at least lend some support and effort to opposing it.

I am curious: How many actually know the difference between: SOCIALISM versus COMMUNISM versus...
Fernapple comments on Feb 16, 2020:
At the most basic level, yes, I think that I do know the difference. However at a deeper level, I am not sure that anyone does, since there are no hard boundaries between them, there are large overlaps, and different people define them differently, often using very subjective judgments and values to reach their definitions. Even in the most extreme cases, there are no hard edges. For example; many would say that, Stalinist Russia was as Communist as you can get, yet they pursued some very racist policies, usually regarded as a feature of Fascism. While many Fascist governments, even Nazi Germany for example, believed in creating full employment by government spending, fairly socialist. While the leader A. H. was a former speaker for the Communist party. Viewed from a distance the extreme political wings often look very different, but when you start looking close they often start to look very alike. Someone once said that the political spectrum is not a line, but a circle. The one defining feature however that all the 'isms' have in common, except perhaps for democratic-socialism, is that they are all, in one way or another anti democratic.

But don't try it on bee stings, they are acid, so you need an alkaline for them. Bicarb is recommended. But the truth is, not much really works for bee stings, in part because they are one of the most complex chemical weapons know, including over fifty different active components. Some of which attack the heart, some the nervous system, some cause local cell death, some are pycho-active agents, while some help spread the others and some have unknown actions.

It may be obvious but of course. “ Thus, from the war of nature, from famine and death, the most exalted object which we are capable of conceiving, namely, the production of the higher animals, directly follows. There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.”
We die. Why do all religions give an out?
Fernapple comments on Feb 13, 2020:
No they do not all pretend to give an out, most religions never really bothered, and a few like some Buddhist sects actually promote accepting true death. In fact, the giving of personal immortality, is mainly just a recent development of the Abrahamic religions, who are of course the ones who do their best to talk up a fear of death in the first place.
