Flowerwall replies on Mar 20, 2020:
@silverotter11 It will not happen. Everyday now we have deaths in our state. We are up to 3 deaths. But cases are all over the state, especially clustered in one area. All you need is one of those people who are currently infected to have coughed or sneezed one time somewhere public and now 10s more who infect 10 more and none will be tested if the person present with symptoms and haven't traveled. Maybe by some luck it hasn't happened. But now they are not even telling where community spread is occurring because they don't know because they are not testing. @Davesnothere I think I read 7B which would be around 1% of budget. So next we have to ask is biodefense 1% of threat. I really am curious how exactly the threat is determined. The math, the assessment. It would be very interesting to learn about. Because that is exactly how the first 1B, or not full 1B, but some part of it, of defense budget must go - assessing the correct funding based on level of threat. Relying on computers and algorithms to figure everything out like so many do in various sectors including financial, medical and tech (to name a few) is very advanced at this point, but nothing can compare to human know-how and individual, ethical responsible decision-making and leadership. So we must put our absolute faith in the integrity of our very best leadership at the top. Right now it feels shaken. It's going to take some work to rebuild. I believe we will get there through time. So you worked in this field? Biodefense seen as stupid stratagem? Hmm, well, eliminate the threat as being from the "outside" let's say it is occurring from the inside, whether naturally or man-made, let's just forget the source at this point of the discussion, but why would prepping for pandemic ever be seen as stupid? Even if it doesn't warrant huge expenditures, rehearsing strategy of how you proceed based on severity, modes of transmission, location of where it originated from, possible loss of life as a result. This is important assessment that should always be occurring in real time. Like a broken record that is constantly asking the same question over and over. The national defense is constantly looking at what needs attending. I know, it's something I need to learn more about. Read up on.

I can see how there would be a human tendency to do that. However there are whole fields of study, books written on strategic planning processes. If you fail to account for this possibility AT ALL, you leave your entire nation completely vulnerable. Threat assessment. What are threats that are possible against the nation? I want a big team of our best and brightest thinkers put on the task of seeing the yhreat BEFORE it occurs. That would include historians. Every. Day. What are the possibilities of threats? Where is the oppurtunity for greatest impact in mitigating threats? Please don't tell me there has never been thought given to this possibility. Go to public health emergency website. @Davesnothere What do the higher ups plan for when they are thinking about national defense, disease outbreaks and such? You plan fire drills, tornado drills, you think about everything that could go wrong. As a nation, what? What is the role of defense? The role of disease control? I would REALLY HOPE there is a dedicated group of cross trained medical/military people sitting around a nice big conference table somewhere everyday thinking about and planning for this very type of occurance. "How do we as a nation lead the pack and as soon as we become aware of an unknown threat that is out there, contain it so it is not brought back on shore?" Asking the question everyday. Maybe it's easy to say this in hindsight "we should have seen this coming" But the fact we didn't makes me question what is being at the top. In another post I was mentioning an article about Rep Nunes, I thought it mentioned he is on house intelligence committee. Our national intelligence? This would be the committee that determines how we will fund intelligence activities? Well this may be the problem. Rep. Nunes seems to be lacking basic understanding of spread of disease. Maybe not a good candidate. Maybe there should be a basic knowledge test, a proficiency exam, all members have to pass before they are to sit on committees of this nature.

Flowerwall replies on Mar 17, 2020:
@Davesnothere Wait a minute. As soon as reports started coming out that there are reports of a new SARS like illness spreading, how should a government respond? It is quite simple. The CDC, the medical response side is alerted, travel becomes dramatically reduced all are alerted not to go because travel may be stopped to the region for a long. You put ii in a "possible pandemic" mode. Then all incoming travelers are quarantined, or self quarantined. You create lists of travelers. You call them. You follow up on their condition. You medically monitor them. You don't allow it to spread. This is THE MOST IMPORTANT phase. Let's not forget according to the original numbers as I calculated out according to Chinese travel data there would have been approximately 16, 000 Americans in China. How many are affected here now? HOW MANY? What a FAILURE! AN UTTER FAILURE! WHAT A LACK OF APPROPRIATE RESPONSE! And the response of world leaders? UNREAL! And of the original 16,000 how many were affected by Covid? 10% is 1,600. 5% is 800. 2.5% is 400 1% is 160. .1% is 16. What number were? I would imagine it would be 5% or less. More than that seems illogical. I know I sound harsh in this post, it is not directed at one person but the entire situation.

I think it was presented in a horrible way and I think it is quite unsettling that this was brought up like this. Leaders need to reassure, leaders need to SOLVE PROBLEMS, leaders need to put every single constituents needs into consideration. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if this sinks certain people politically. I just read an article that tore up several world leaders responses to the crisis and the observations were accurate. I do not follow politics enough to know the exact leanings of the various leaders, to say I agree politically with their stance, but the response to this crisis, I do know what I think appropriate response should have been. To say the various governments have never planned for this type of scenario? That is something I cannot believe. If not, then definitely more transparency needs to exist on what is happening "behind the scenes" in disaster preparedness. We need to rebuild our sense of safety.

I appreciate any organization or individual that helps to support the cause of recovery. Trump and his administration do currently owe the public a more transparent and accurate accounting for the decionmaking that has occurred up until this point, imo. If the offer is declined it must be demanded that there is an explanation. I read an article just the other day, and it talked about the overall of accountability for many aspects of the handling of this matter. I felt the President was attempting to stop discussion of accountability when he responded to questioning of previous action as "a nasty question" in the recent press briefing.

@bobwjr That's one possible explanation, but it could also be an attempt to avoid any criticism of the highest level decision making. I would really be interested in hearing the explanation that was given for dissolving the global health security team that would have headed this crisis that occurred under his leadership. There has to be a well-thought-out reason why this occurred. A strategic decision making process that was followed, something that pointed to a lowering of risk from potential disease sources, less risk of bioterrorism. What were those key indicators? What were the factors in this decision making process? I wonder if anyone has come across an interview/ news article that details the why of this matter.

This is WRONG. This is how you come to suspect that there are flaws in how our government is run. It feels like we are under a monarchy in this regard and the king has made his decree that we the subjects will now have to deal with despite our knowledge and preferences. Certain aspects of how the country is run should not be under Presidential control to disband and this is one of them! Trying to fix it now, it's late. Not saying all shouldn't be done now, but an ounce of prevention worth a pound of cure. Also the public health website mentioned above does have updated information. @JackPedigo Yes I do recall at one point, was it 10 years ago or so?, where they stopped counting certain groups of people as they been unemployed so long they were considered to have dropped out of the workforce. Maybe a better way to calculate would be trying to create that number ourselves based on population, number employed etc, and then doing the math. I guess I don't understand how people drop out of the workforce in those situations, or why it would be useful to exclude people from the count. I think many people do live in poverty. It is a very serious problem that needs to be worked out. You hear talk of these growing homeless populations and it's a reality. Yes I can imagine government is always short of money, right? It never changes. I don't know how CA would ever be able to implement single-payer. The little bit I have read on it makes it sound so far-fetched. @GhostSoCal This is EXACTLY the type of mismanagement I am talking about! You get this sense of complete lack of preparedness. Is it lack of foresight to potential problems? And it has some good ideas in it, but just reading it makes me realize how woefully unprepared the world is for outbreaks such as these. It's a huge failure to assess and plan for a risk that is out there. And I by no means am criticizing the health professionals on the front lines. They have my utmost respect. I am referring to those in government and international agencies who are responsible for addressing and preparing for these issues. As soon as dozens were identified as having pneumonia in Wuhan of undetermined origin this should be immediate red flag with travelling. How long after we had that news did we stop incoming travel? @Marionville, @JackPedigo I appreciate the responses. There is a lot to consider in such a big decision that effects so many. This is why it has to be studied from every possible angle beforehand. The worst possibility is people not seeking medical care or being able to afford the care that is needed. I think everyone can agree on that. And I think that is why change has been made through steps in that direction under President Obama. And hopefully Republicans don't undo progress in the coming years and get away with working against the interests of Americans health. I had been under the impression unemployment rates were higher in UK than US, but I just looked up and rates are running just about the same 3.x%.Well that is proof that unemployment can still be low with socialized medicine. Somewhat of a problem with the shortage of Drs there because of situation with Brexit. Also the need for new hospitals to be built. No situation will ever be problem free and hearing you express approval for your healthcare system overall is a good sign that it is not a system completely riddled with problems. Just looked at poverty rates. UK looks to be at 22% and US 11%. I think the situation mentioned with property taxes is exactly the type of situation every American is wary of. Rates going up ever higher and higher. Knowing that part of money paid to the system is wasted. Studies show waste in our current model, what about possible waste under a M4A system? I think the whole timing for this idea is somewhat premature. I look forward to seeing what happens in CA with their study. With that said I still support Sanders. I believe he has the interests of the American people foremost in his plans. Maybe with his somewhat radical ideas he will put further positive changes in motion.

@GhostSoCal According to a number I just read Wuhan is 10th mot popular Chinese tourist destination. 2.5 million visitors annually. I am sure this is a global number of visitors and vast majority would be from neighboring nations. That's a guess. Wuhan population is 11.08 million. So maybe 200,000 travelers during the past month. Wouldn't all travels to the region STOP as soon news of this illness spread? Now we are talking about more nations, more areas, of course. But again if this illness had a very high mortality rate, it's just appearing as ineffective capacity to contain. We need a much better response, imo. EDIT: Just read this "The third and fourth largest source continents were America and Oceania, with the share of 7.9% and 1.9% respectively." (They are referring to tourism when they say source continents.) Wow so that would bring the number of Americans in Wuhan down to a much smaller number.

@Bobbyzen I DID read the article, but as it states at the end I am keeping an open mind. I don't immediately label police practice as racist unless it is clear it IS. And as article points out Chicago is not New York. Your article states stop and frisk was horrible PTSD inducing, and I understand, NOT GOOD, but what about the crime itself? I think that produces PTSD also when people don't feel safe because police are NOT policing enough, when people are living in constant possibility of violence or have lost family or friends. From what I hear it creates a huge disconnect between community members and the people meant to protect them. I am getting off topic somewhat. This is about Bloomberg and New York, though comparisons to Chicago are useful. If you read up on Chicago, I think the murder rate is 4x higher than New York.

1) Be able to search for group names 2) Better search system for topics, sometimes it is not clear where you are searching 3) Unify the normal list and the shared list of the groups, no one looks on he shared list so everyone needs to double post if something is relevant to more than one group
Flowerwall replies on Feb 6, 2020:
Yeah I often search words to see if something has already been posted, I don't think I am getting all the results. Or possibly not searching everwhere.

I've seen this book mentioned here before but I've not read it. I would like to learn more, though my first reaction is not positive because I feel it is in direct opposition to the intent and mindset of the Founding Fathers. This is is just my initial reaction however. I do realize our Founding ...

@Joanne I agree with the first half of your last sentence. I haven't read the book, so it's hard for me to pinpoint exactly where it is a disagree. I also agree with all references to God being open to interpretation of individual religious beliefs or absence of belief. I also liked the quote given by the author in the interview "Patriotism has no religion". This is a good point to remember - your duty is to separate the lines of thinking to uphold each to the highest possible standards remembering that who we are as a nation is built upon certain fundamental principles of tolerance and freedom that are unchanging. There certainly are boundaries on where those exist, definately. And the boundaries cannot be crossed without changing the core. Also thanks for posting the treaty info. It is something to learn about.

@bobbio52 Thank you for including this detailed information I was not familiar with. Even if we put aside the Founding Fathers intent and look at the words of Abraham Lincoln, our nation's greatest, we see references to God in his addresses to the nation. I came across one of his speeches the other day , as I was looking something up, and he very clearly puts the references in no uncertain terms "God" and it is at this mention that his words seem the most profound, imo.

@Joanne, @twill, @redbai, @bobbio52 Thanks for your reply. I just read an interview with the author and I am finding myself in agreement with him more than I expected to. I do agree in a high level of separation between church and state because it allows people to worship freely or not worship at all, a very neccessary component of a free society, but I do still think our nation was founded on Judeo-Christian values. Also, I can understand why the ideas presented in the book were presented and I think given our current political reality it is a neccessary perspective to examine and understand in more detail. Reading the book seems like a good way to do just that. I hope to read more.

Well in works such as "Rosemary's Baby" it is very clearly fiction, a scary story, the intent is a horror read. But to attempt to pass this off as a fact, a real thing, it is really wrong and irresponsible. I don't ever think of televangelists as being real. It's hard to believe, but I guess they are.
