I was born in Hollywood CA in 1954 to a show business family (with a movie star uncle) -- my grandmother, mother, great aunt and aunt all converted to Baha'i in West Hollywood by 1950. I grew up in it. I refer to it as 'Islam light' or 'Islam without the attitude.' We grew up strongly indoctrinated even though prior to Baha'i my Norwegian immigrant family had never been religious. I think they saw it more as a social movement at the time. It has some good broad principals, but in the end it is a strict authoritarian religion, not that different from Islam or Catholicism, rather fundamental and anti-gay. Despite the religion telling us as young people to drop everything and just serve the religion, I managed to get through college...but then went to Africa to spread the good word
