LA’s Atheist Street Pirates go national in efforts to remove illegal religious signs A recent art...

Some people leave religious books at a local nature center with a Take a Book, Leave a Book in an oversized bird house. I only take the religious books and recycle them. I leave literature.

@MizJ I have never really accepted that old adage "all publicity is good publicity." I remember the kind of coverage Done Cheato got as far back as the 1980s. For instance, he was profiled on shows like Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. All that did for him in my book was to confirm that he was a loudmouth douchebag. I'll concede, my reaction was not typical in all circles, but can I think of plenty of other examples where bad publicity was bad for whoever. Take the publicity that Nixon during the Watergate scandal. Or that Timothy McVeigh got after Oklahoma City. When actual crimes are proven, the publicity is almost universally bad for the criminal. This, I think, will turn out to be the case with Orange Foolius in the coming months. He has a cult following, and many people who have a big emotional investment in Trump/Q/MAGA will undoubtedly stick with him no matter what. But for some the tide is turning, and they will end up turning his picture to the wall. Call me an optimist.🤞

Flyingsaucesir replies on Apr 26, 2023:
@rainmanjr The average species lasts only 2 or 3 million years before going extinct. Ours is far younger than that (Homo sapiens has existed for about 200,000 years), but we also are unique in our destructive capability. Sexual activity in our species, and in that of our close relatives the Bonobos, has utilities outside reproduction. Homosexuality has always been a factor in human relations. Is it more prevalent now? Or does it just seem that way because taboos are falling away, and society is becoming more open and honest? I'll wager it's the latter. It's also a fact that, with 8 billion of us roaming the planet, it's not necessary for everyone to reproduce. In fact, it's probably better that we don't. So if reproduction is not a priority, should it surprise us if many people choose alternative lifestyles?
It couldn't happen to a more deserving POS 😂

@Alienbeing OK, you are right, your incorrect statement is still there. (Damn your eyes for making me go back and find it!) Here it is: "It is too early to say who will win. Why do you think Trump and DeSantis are the only two?" The only two what? Aardvarks? No...what were we talking about? Oh yeah. CANDIDATES. There you falsely assert that DeSantis is a candidate for the presidency. Do you want to continue to deny that you were wrong? Go ahead. Just know that for any normal person I would have let ot go. But you are always so obnoxious with everyone, always spitting hairs and picking fights, that I figured you deserve a dose of your own medicine. But that's probably a bad decision on my part. I think you, like Serge S. did as a kid, thrive on the petty argument. You love it. It keeps you going. There must be a gaping black hole in your psyche that you desperately try to fill through verbal combat with strangers. Well, Serge S. was just a kid when i knew him back in the 70s. He's probably matured and left all that rubbish behind. What's your excuse? Never mind. Just please fuck off.

@snytiger6 After watching it again I come to the same conclusion. Maher talks about "going after" presidents for sex scandals, and how nobody (millennials) don't seem to care, etc., etc. He talks about how, unlike in the case of Republicans going after Clinton for having sex with an intern, Democrats could go after Trump for "real crimes." And he dismisses the election law violation/tax fraud/falsifying business records case as weak or unwinnable. Yet all the coverage I have seen/heard has focussed on the technical aspects and how this case is about an illegal cover up of another crime (i.e. campaign finance violations). In other words, Maher set up a straw man that he could beat up, and pretty much missed the whole point. Well, we shall see how weak and insignificant the case is in a few months. I think David Pecker is going to turn out to be the star witness, with damning testimony. Stay tuned.

@SeaGreenEyez I only cited the state laws to give context to Clinton's federal AWB. And the data indicate that it had a salubrious effect on the rate of shootings. I'm not crying "states' rights!" I'm saying we should have another federal AWB. This time, with no sunset clause. As for universal healthcare, there was no effing way it was going to happen. Obama got what was obtainable at the time. It was a big step forward, and is built to promote and accommodate universal healthcare when that becomes obtainable. 50% of something is better than 100% of nothing.

@SeaGreenEyez Three U.S. states passed assault weapons bans before Congress passed (and Clinton signed) the federal Assault Weapons Ban of 1994: California in 1989, New Jersey in 1990, and Connecticut in 1993. Four others passed assault weapons bans before Bush let the AWB 1994 expire in 2004: Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts and New York. Since then, Delaware, Illinois, and Washington DC have restricted assault weapons. So nine states and DC currently restrict assault rifles. Obama spent all his political capital on the Affordable Care Act. After his first midterm, he never had a Democratic majority in congress. Then came Orange Foolius. There was no way he was going against the NRA (or the KKK, for that matter). Biden spent his political capital on pandemic relief, the biggest infrastructure bill ever, AND the first significant gun legislation passed since Clinton.
Justice lacks judgement.

@BD66 The murder rate in the 90s was too high, and it's still too high. There is no crisis today? Tell that to the parents of the slain children of Columbine, Parkland, Sandyhook, Uvalde, Nashville, and dozens of other massacre sites. It is state law that has preeminence in gun regulation. The cities you mentioned are all either located in red states or border red states. Red states have higher rates of gun violence than blue states. Much higher. I don't think it is fair to characterize the incidents at Ruby Ridge and Waco as examples of government overreach. In both cases, paranoid individuals were either known to be or thought to be stockpiling illegal weapons. Government agents attempted to serve lawful search or arrest warrants. The individuals in question had a duty to comply with a lawful order, but they refused. All the unfortunate resulting events stem from that unlawful refusal to comply with lawful orders. Did the government handle the situations in the best way possible? Sadly, no. But we cannot blame the mass suicide of members of an apocalyptic cult on officers attempting to uphold the law of the land. Rule of law means comply and work within the system. Get a lawyer and go to court. Don't pick up a gun and start shooting. That's just stupid.

@BD66 Interesting numbers, but you're comparing apples and oranges. Just because authoritarian regimes have a predilection for genocide does not mean a democratic nation should not seek to improve itself by minimizing mass shootings. When the number one cause of death among children is guns, ahead of disease, ahead of car accidents, ahead of drowning, ahead of drug overdoses, you know our gun laws are way out of whack. And don't think for one minute that the small arms circulating in our civilian population are the only thing keeping us from sliding into authoritarianism. It is rule of law that is doing the heavy lifting there. Rule of law backed up by professional prosecutors and police. Happily, we have no need to go up against our own military. Why? Because it's under civilian command. If we don't like the commander in chief, we can fire him/her (as we did with Trumpty Dumpty).

@fishline79 The important thing about the recent breakthrough in fusion technology is that they got more energy out than they put in. And that is, essentially, the whole ballgame. Niether the government not the Proud Boys should interfere. Parenthetically, I don't think there is any harm in young kids learning that the clothing options and pronouns we typically associate with one gender or the other are essentially arbitrary. Look at the traditions of certain pastoral tribes of Sudan and you will see what I mean. The men get prettily dolled up and stand in a line, shoulder to shoulder, while the much more plainly dressed women parade before them...exactly the opposite of what we see in our meat market nightclubs.

Unbeknownst to me, this 40-litre Florence flask had sat unused in storage for years. It had been donated to the school by County Sheriff, who had confiscated it from an illegal drug lab.
