Flyingsaucesir replies on Apr 2, 2023:
@Trajan61 I was a high school teacher for two decades, spanning three presidential administrations: Bush, Obama, and Trump. Bush's signature education law, NCLB, was an unqualified disaster. It had administrators running around like in a Chinese fire drill, throwing students into courses for which they were not prepared. In other words, setting them up for failure. Bush was also a big supporter of funding parochial schools at the expense of secular public schools through voucher programs. Student achievement did not improve under Bush. Things went more smoothly under Obama. Student engagement was higher, and administrators showed a modicum of intelligence. Trump appointed an idiot named Betsy DeVos to the office of Education Secretary. DeVos carried out a full court press to defund public schools and empower religious schools in their place. Also, students were not unaware of Trump's jaded and racist views, and, consequently, were much more unsettled, angry, and unfocussed than ever. Academic achievement during the Trump years was the lowest I ever saw in my carreer. In sum, once again Mr. @Trajan61, you have demonstrated that you don't know what you're talking about. Congratulations. 🎉

Flyingsaucesir replies on Apr 2, 2023:
Can we please be done with the word "woke"? It's so overused that it has lost whatever meaning it once had. Also: society has always had its degenerate elements. The KKK, for instance. And, yes, men who like to fuck other men in the ass. The difference? The former is a terrorist organization, and the latter generally happens between consenting adults, and, if kept private, is nobody's business. In any case, it has always been there. Alexander the Great was a flaming homosexual! I think the very public displays of the LGBTQ community (gay pride parades, etc.) are a natural (over)reaction to the many many years of oppression and abuse they have suffered. I hope for their sakes they learn to tap the brakes....before there is a backlash to the backlash which followed the other backlash. Everybody needs to chill out.

We should see steps 4 through 6 completed on Tuesday. The trial should only take a few days, maybe a week. Of course Cheato's lawyers are going to try and delay the process as much as possible. Still, I don't see the trial going into May. Then there will be appeals, of course. He'll try to take it to the Supreme Court, but I doubt they will hear the case.

@Diogenes The vast majority of mass shootings end with the killing of the shooter. This is common knowledge, and would not be lost on anyone planning a mass shooting. Shooters do not expect to survive. That's why they tend to leave written manifestos (as this last one apparently did). I don't think joy has any role in the mass shooter's killing. If it did, they wouldn't they do it covertly, try to get away with it, so they could do it again and again? But that's not what they do. Instead, they put themselves into a situation from which there is no escape. It's essentially suicide by cop.

@David_Cooper Okay, an earthworm has a nerve ganglion, which is very rudimentary type of central nervous system. It can have sensations such as pain, so it is technically sentient. However, the earthworm does not have consciousness. In any case, in all animals, when the body dies and the nervous system stops functioning, all sentience (and consciousness, if it was present) ceases. Neither sentience nor consciousness is eternal.

@David_Cooper A worm can feel pain, but it is not sentient. It does not "suffer" in the sense that humans or dogs suffer. A worm does not even have the consciousness of lizard. And a lizard does not have higher-level consciousness. A lizard does not make plans for the future. It does not experience nostalgia, or grief, or joy, or sadness, or love. It only lives in the here and now, and acts on instinct (an inherited set of genetically coded behaviors). Pain is a sensation that evolved as a survival mechanism. Without pain, an organism will do life-threatening damage to its body. If the body dies, it cannot reproduce. Pain is universal in animals because, over billions of generations, individuals who did not feel pain died before they could reproduce. A brain is much more than a simple geometrical arrangement of atoms. A brain is an exquisitely complex network of highly interconnected neurons, with an astoundingly large number of possible inter-communication patterns. A human brain has around 100 billion neurons, each of which is connected to around ten thousand other neurons via synapses. The thing that can feel pain doesn't go anywhere. It just changes into a thing that cannot feel pain (or joy, or sadness, or mirth, or ennui, or anything at all).

@fishline79 All of our energy comes from our food. The energy in our food comes from the sun. As it moves up through the food chain, energy is constantly dissipated in the form of heat. Our cells use food energy to do various kinds of work (including the building of body cells and tissues). Brain work is mostly pumping ions across selectively permeable membranes. This is the basis for action potentials in neurons, which in turn are the basis of all thoughts, sensations, dreams, hallucinations, desires, fantasies,...every kind of cognition. When a human body dies, the set of chemical reactions needed for life ceases, and a new set of reactions begins to break down the body and release what little energy is contained there. The reactions of decomposition also release heat. That's it. What we sometimes refer to as "life force" is really just a set of chemical reactions, most of which are facilitated by biochemical catalysts called enzymes. When the body can no longer maintain its chemistry within certain narrow limits (a process called homeostasis), it dies. Finis.

The commercials aired in the 1970s, contemporaneously with the song. So in this case, I don't think misleading today's young people is an issue. Anyway, we all have far more information at our fingertips today. For instance, there is an app that can "listen" to a snippet of any musical recording and immediately tell you the artist, title, genre, release date, etc., etc. Then you can find any number of YouTube videos of performances of the piece.
Remember you heard it here first (from me) that covid escaped from the Chinese lab.

Flyingsaucesir replies on Mar 22, 2023:
@rainmanjr No, my friend, they are not the same. A hypothesis is an educated guess, one that can be tested for accuracy. Hypotheses that, after rigorous testing, turn out to be unassailably true are called facts. For instance: Alfred Wegener hypothesized that the American continents had once been connected to Europe and Africa. He based this hypothesis on the shapes of the continents and on certain fossils and rocks found on both sides of the Atlantic ocean. A theory is a unifying explanation for a diverse set of facts. For instance, the Theory of Plate Tectonics explains... why the continents look like they once fit together, why there are volcanic mid-ocean ridges, why there is a "ring of fire" around the Pacific ocean basin, why the western part of California is sliding northward along the San Andreas fault, why deep earthquakes are often concentrated in Benioff zones, why there are pieces of ocean floor in the Sierra Nevada mountains and in the Himalayas and the Alps, etc., why no ocean floor rocks are more than about 100 million years old, why ocean floors have "striped" magnetic anomaly patterns, why there are tsunamis, why there are island arcs, Why Turkey recently experienced those massive earthquakes, etc., etc., etc. The explanation for all of these facts is called the Theory of Plate Tectonics. It says that the Earth's rigid crust is broken up into plates, and these move around constantly, driven by convection currents in the mantle. These movements are the cause of all the afore-mentioned phenomena, and many more that I have not mentioned. Now you know homie. Don't blow it. 🙂

@Alienbeing It is a matter for interpretation. Unless we can get one or more justices privately saying what they actually think in texts messages, emails, or on a hot mike, we will probably never find definitive proof. Notwithstanding the lack of such evidence, the basic facts of the case do sustain the notion that the Court's "conservative" majority is siding with the religious"right" on the question of abortion. In giving the slightest credence to the idea that a fertilized egg or an embryo is a person they are going along with a religious opinion that is not supported by science. They broke 50 years of precedent to make that ruling. The reasoning given in the majority opinion is laughably weak, and really only serve as a smoke screen. So to opine that the Court is following a religious agenda is not at all crazy.

@St-Sinner Uh, no, Republicans don't "keep winning." The MAGAts lost in 2018, 2020, and 2022. Republicans might be good at jailing poor Black and Hispanic men, but they are also good at pardoning rich white men. Done Cheato has been "invited" to testify before a grand jury in New York next week. This is normally the last thing that happens before an indictment is handed down. So it's kinda early to be saying that Trumpty Dumpty is getting off Scott free. A DA down in Georgia says that "indictments are imminent." We'll see what that means. DOJ's special counsel Jack Smith still has time to indict Trump. If it's going to happen, it has to be this year. Again, we shall see.

The great thing about court cases is that evidence is laid out methodically, and it all becomes part of the public record. So everyone can see the evidence. But I think we can peel some away from the MAGAt base. Meanwhile, with a guilty verdict in hand, we can push back harder.
