@CourtJester The Democratic Party of the Civil War era was a party of oligarchy and slavery, and bears no resemblance to the Democrats of today. And today's Republican Party is split between two factions: one that still believes in democratic institutions and rule of law, and the neo-fascist MAGAt wing that is driven by wacko replacement theory to embrace corruption and autocracy.

@CourtJester Nationally we're dropping the names of Confederate generals from our military bases, lowering the Confederate flag from statehouses, and removing statues of Confederate officers from our parks. This seems entirely reasonable to me. No matter how gallantly they may have fought, people who struggled to uphold and perpetuate slavery should not be publicly celebrated.

@ChestRockfield Yeah, I feel you, but saying "I would push a button" is a long, long way from actually spilling another human being's blood. Have you ever killed a large animal? Seen it shake and writhe in its death throes? Heard the rattle in its throat? I have, and I can tell you that killing is very nasty work. I will stump and debate and argue and harangue and, yes, compromise all day long before I will go killing people over their political views. That being said, there is certainly a line somewhere out there where I would unleash hell upon my enemies. But we're not there yet. Let's first use the rule of law to hold the ringleaders accountable. And any who violently rise up to defend them, we can crush them in good conscience, and sleep well at night.

Yeah, you need to provide evidence to support your claim. Go do your homework. Even if we give your statement the benefit of the doubt, it still does not help your case. Any city is bound to have more crime than a rural area. And yet the crime in cities is not enough to skew the damning state data. You are still faced with the undeniable fact that states with Republican leadership have more gun violence.

I am old enough to remember the Vietnam war, and how unpopular it was. Did the draft dodging that occurred then significantly shorten the war? Probably not. But it did symbolize a resistance that cut deeply through society. And today's Russia is not 1960s/70s America. We lost around 55,000 men in Vietnam over 15 years. The Russian casualty rate is much higher. In one year they have had, by some estimates, as many as 60,000 men killed, 200,000+ total casualties. Even convicts have mothers.

@BDair Anyone can report an adverse event to VAERS. And there are many unscrupulous actors who profit from fake news about vaccine harm. They have a strong profit incentive to submit fake reports of adverse events. It takes time to verify or debunk these reports. Meanwhile, 250 million people have received the vaccine without experiencing serious side effects.

A quick search will allow you to find a shit ton of videos where Biden has argued to cut social security and he is the one man that lead the effort to tax social security several years ago..... but yeah.... it's the other side's fault and now he's the great protector.
Flyingsaucesir replies on Feb 16, 2023:
I'm for means testing in both Social Security and Medicare. It makes no sense to be sending fat checks to multi-millionaires and billionaires😎👍 Before I raised the retirement age, I would first make sure the wealthy and corporations were paying their fair share in taxes (definitely more than they pay now). And I would cut military spending before I would raise the retirement age. But raising the retirement age is not an absolutely crazy idea. Where Biden was 20 or 30 years ago is not really germaine today. All politicians play politics. The fact is, today he is not about to cut SS or Medicare. And today's Biden is the one that counts, the only one that can sign bills into law.

@jackjr Thanks. And I even forgot to add that I ripped the gas furnace out of my house. If I heat the house at all, I burn some wood in the fireplace. But that is very seldom. If the temperature only gets down to 60°F inside the house I don't bother to light a fire. If it gets down to the low 50s or high 40s I might light a fire. I also try to eat low on the food chain. Lots of green vegetables, some chicken, some fish. Almost no beef. So yeah, I really do try to minimize my impact. Sounds like you do too. 😎👍

Unbeknownst to me, this 40-litre Florence flask had sat unused in storage for years. It had been donated to the school by County Sheriff, who had confiscated it from an illegal drug lab. The Science Dept. Chair was going to throw it in the trash. I rescued it, made a base for it, and used it as a classroom fish tank. 🙂
