Later in the 2000s there was a huge methane leak in Los Angeles County that could be seen with infrared cameras. But I do agree that, at least in certain cases, powering domiciles individually is better that powering a grid. First, you eliminate transmission lines (which are not only expensive to build and maintain, but also "leak" energy. Second, a distributed system is more resilient to both natural disasters and hacking by bad actors. If it were allowed, I would get my house off the grid. But, unfortunately, that is not allowed.

Flyingsaucesir replies on Feb 6, 2023:
@FvckY0u It certainly couldn't hurt to "look into these issues on a much deeper level, bring science and facts into the conversations and avoid personal feelings/beliefs." But it's not like we have been sitting on our hands. This investigation is already under way. Social scientists, psychologists, and neuroscientists are, and have been, studying the reasons for mass shootings and other kinds of violence for a long time. And what have they found? Well, for starters, hostile foreign powers are spreading false information through online social media, fomenting discord by exploiting existing fault lines in society. And modern life has a tendency to create lonely spaces. People can become isolated. Then some lonely, alienated loser finds what he thinks is community on the internet, disappears down a rabbit hole, and reappears radicalized, with an AR15, convinced that immigrants, or people of color, are responsible for his unhappiness. It's not that complicated. Unfortunately, there are no easy solutions for that whole series of problems. But while we are working on that, we can be closing the loopholes in the gun laws. There is nothing that says we can't close the gun show loophole, or outlaw bump stocks, or limit magazine capacity, etc. We are not constrained except by political orientation (which is, for many on the right, influenced by those same hostile foreign powers I mentioned earlier).

@TheoryNumber3 You mean Faux News? Well, they lie! They're just trying to get people angry, because that translates into higher ratings and more money for them. 🤑 Anyone who has a gas range can keep right on cooking with it. But gas is being phased out. In some forward-looking jurisdictions, new houses will not have gas-fired water heaters, stoves, or furnaces. This is a good thing. Natural gas (methane) is a powerful greenhouse gas. Its global warming potential (GWP) is about 60 times that of its combustion product, CO2. Getting the gas from the well to the house is fraught with difficulties, and there are many leaks along the way. By not using gas for cooking, heating water, or heating homes we not only eliminate sources of the greenhouse gases methane and CO2, we also eliminate nitric and nitrous oxides which exacerbate asthma and damage lungs. There is a new type of electric stove, called an induction stove, that is much cleaner and much more efficient than the old resistance type electric stoves. I plan to get one this year.

@FvckY0u Oh, for a minute there it sounded like you knew what the root causes are. As far as I know, no one is calling for a ban on guns in the home, as long as they have serial numbers, are not machine guns, are kept safely locked up so kids can't access them, etc. But how many states don't have safe storage laws? How many allow bump stocks, which effectively turn a semi-automatic assault rifle into a machine gun? How many states don't have red flag laws? How many don't require a background check to buy a firearm, or have gaping loopholes in the requirement? Is it really even necessary to to have a long philosophical discussion about root causes in order to address these issues? I don't think so.

Flyingsaucesir replies on Feb 5, 2023:
@CourtJester Ha ha ha! Your 87% figure is more than double the typical Republican lie. Where did you get it? Faux News? Even the Right wing-nut figure of 40% is way off, because it does not take into account the FICA taxes (which include Medicare and Social Security), which apply only to the first $148K in personal income. It also does not take into account state and local taxes, which impact ordinary people far more than they do the super rich. Also, the rich can write off many of their ordinary expenses as business expenses. The limousine, the yacht, the jet, the apartment in Manhattan, the dinners at expensive restaurants, etc, etc., all write-offs, because they use all these things to entertain clients, travel to business meetings, etc. Further, a large portion of wealthy people's income is unrealized capital gains (from rising value of stocks and other assets) which are not taxed at all. And then there are the assets that are hidden behind layers of front business in offshore accounts. So the wealthy end up paying far less that commonly reported. The actual figure is closer to 8% when it's all said and done. Now watch what I do CJ. I'll take this reply to your ridiculous, trolling question, turn it into a stand-alone post, add some links with supporting evidence, and reach an even wider audience. Thank you CJ! You just helped the cause of justice in taxation!!! 😂😂😂

@BDair OK, I should have said the CDC never said the vaccine is 100% effective at preventing infection. It's 90% effective. Or it was. That was true for the variants that existed at that time. And as new variants have emerged, the effectiveness of the vaccine has changed. And new vaccines have been developed in the attempt to keep pace with the viral mutations. And the CDC reported on this, and continues to report on these changes and developments as they take place. This is how science works. Things are constantly changing and new information is constantly coming in. And the CDC and NIH were on TV and updating their web sites almost every day with what new information they had learned about this novel coronavirus. In fact, they have done a splendid job of keeping us informed during this public health emergency. You really ought to get your facts straight before you start throwing around accusations. He worked in the billing department of a hospital, might have been exposed to the virus there. Or maybe elsewhere. We'll never know. Anyway, he was a healthy, youngish adult before he got COVID-19. When it comes to our immune systems, we are not all created equal. Some people have natural immunity to certain pathogens that knock others flat. It sounds like you might have a natural immunity to SARS CoV-2. But then again, that might be an illusion. Unbeknownst to me, this 40-litre Florence flask had sat unused in storage for years. It had been donated to the school by County Sheriff, who had confiscated it from an illegal drug lab. The Science Dept. Chair was going to throw it in the trash. I rescued it, made a base for it, and used it as a classroom fish tank. 🙂
