In trying to understand the full import of climate change it really helps to know the history of mass extinction on this planet. The greatest die-off, known as the Permian extinction, saw the demise of around 95% of the species then inhabiting Earth. And that event was brought about by climate change. And that climate change was driven by a rapid buildup of greenhouse gases on the atmosphere. And that buildup was spurred by self-reenforcing feedback loops. And the only major difference between what happened then (about 250 million years ago) and today's situation is that it's happening about ten times faster this time around. And here I am spouting facts that many people cannot wrap their heads around -- because of the biases mentioned in the article -- but also due to a fatal lack of imagination. However, this may be beside the point. We should not expect people who have not studied mass extinction and climate science to get it. We should redouble our efforts to educate them AND couch our lessons in moral terms. And we should not wait for Joe Lunchbuckethead to get it before acting. Then it will be too late. If we have to drag those unimaginative masses kicking and screaming then so be it. There are times when those who know need to lead. Unfortunately right now, the voices of many members of the intelligentsia are muted by short-term political concerns. And even if they talk the talk, they don't walk the walk. The accepted wisdom is that photons are pure energy; massless particles of light. However, a distinction is made between REST mass and mass at the speed of light. Apparently photons do have mass while they are travelling at or near the speed of light. In fact, if we look at Einstein's famous equation explaining the relationship between mass and energy, E=mc squared, we can readily see that a photon, which we all agree is energy, MUST have mass. In the equation, if mass is zero, then c (the speed of light) must also be zero, and E (energy) would also have to be zero. But there IS energy in a photon and therefore there must be mass. The question then becomes, is the mass of the light in the galaxy sufficient to explain the galaxy's high apparent gravity? Maybe not by itself, but it looks like it might be part of the solution as to why galaxies don't fly apart due to their high rotational velocities. Maybe it is the mass of light AND the as yet undefined dark matter together that keep galaxies together.

The concept of race is not a real human characteristic and is not recognized as valid by biologists. It is an arbitrary and invented division where none actually exists. The race concept breaks down because there is as much natural variation WITHIN a so-called racial group as there is BETWEEN so-called racial groups. For example there are "white" people who have many of the same phenotypic traits shared by "black" people, and vice-versa. I have not had time to analyze the many other claims, but I think the author's focus on trade is a bit misplaced. Society does have an interest in women's health as well as in that of their offspring. From a public health perspective it makes sense to have legal abortions available. If the procedure is illegal it will happen anyway, but clandestinely. And that is when women die. If they live, they may make the choice to reproduce at some future time when conditions are more favorable for child rearing. Loss of an embryo, while lamentable, is no tragedy. It is not the same as losing a person. In fact, a fetus has no consciousness and should be considered nothing more than a potentiality. Also, we should note that natural, spontaneous abortions (miscarraiges) are at least as common as live births. And they occur with more frequency in the USA than in other developed nations. So if "pro life" people really want to have a positive impact on human reproduction they could vote only for representatives who will fix our broken healthcare system and fund the Affordable Care Act.

One thing about the "conservatives" is that they have a very well-oiled propaganda machine. They have been working on it for a long time, and it really hums! They also have their hot-button religious/social issues and capitalist ideology to rally around. They have been so successful at casting doubt on established science that liberals have been hesitant to bring up environmental issues. Global warming was barely mentioned in 2016, and in 2018 the Dems ran on healthcare (specifically, coverage for people with pre-existing conditions). You can wheel out all the mouthpieces in the world, but if they don't have a platform what are they going to say? The liberals have got to get better at framing the discussion. We need to seize the initiative, take the high ground, and establish the terms of the debate. For every catchy phrase the right comes up with the left has to have a better one to counter it. Above all the left has to be careful not to over-reach. We need to clearly repudiate wild, non-starter ideas like dissolving ICE. that kind of stuff is red meat for the "conservatives." One place we could start is stop calling them conservatives. Their ideas about pure capitalism are actually radical. Even Adam Smith said that some regulation was needed or the system would collapse. And the idea that you can go on despoiling the Earth without consequences is anything but conservative. Just sayin'.

It seems pretty clear that to inspire people to work hard they have to be free to profit from their own talents, creativity, and energy. Lack of such freedom led to the downfall of the Soviet Union. It is also clear that in unregulated capitalism big fish eat up little fish and multiple rounds of consolidation eliminates competition and creates monopolies. Without competition the quality of goods and services declines. And without regulation corporations run rough shod over the environment, realizing profits for investors but leaving the public holding the liabilities. That's what is happening right now as Trump denies climate science in order to allow the fossil fuel industry to rake in massive profits. Meanwhile, fires, floods, and asthma devastate average Americans. That's without regulation. With regulation, the system can reach high efficiency and productivity, improving life for billions. The highly regulated model is not pure capitalism however. It is a mixture of capitalism and socialism. In his zeal to do away with financial and environmental regulations, Trump tilts the scale towards pure capitalism. His policies produce short-term gains that really only benefit an elite minority. In the long run they erode the foundations of our economy. To answer the original question, I have to say no, I don't still believe in pure capitalism. I don't think I ever did. But I think a dash of capitalism is necessary to keep people interested in producing and innovating.

Yes, we live in society that is rife with hypocracy, corruption, and unrealistic expectations. I think much of the latter is brought about through advertising. As screens, with all their mendacious content, proliferate we need to make a conscious effort as a society to mentally separate the chicken from the gumbo, try and infuse a little reality back into every day living. We can start by cancelling our Facebook accounts.

I hope that Trump supporters are starting to realize that their rhetoric regarding Hillary has been wildly over the top and unfair for a long time. Let's not make the same mistake by calling for Ivanka's head over what is essentially small potatoes. We don't want to get side-tracked and lose sight of our main objective, to oust Putin's puppet regime. So yeah, point out the hypocracy and then bring the focus back to Donald's treason.
