@Mickey The Mueller Report is available for you to read, if you dare. You know what makes the January 6 Committee's Report so compelling? So damning? Most of the witnesses were Republicans! Your response is so typical of people in the thrall of a personality cult: you simply repeat the "best ever" mantra without ever addressing the evidence. You are proof that zombies do exist.

All evidence to date indicates that Einstein was wrong about this.

@Mickey The Mueller report concluded that Trump obstructed justice on at least ten occasions, and also could not rule out collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians. We know for sure that campaign manager Paul Manafort passed internal polling data to the Russians, and that Roger Stone was convicted of witness tampering and perjury. Imagine what we would know if these men had, instead of lying under oath, cooperated with the investigation. The main conspiracy theory that Boebert, Taylor-Green, Gaetz, and other Trump minions traffic in is, of course, Trump's Big Lie that the 2020 election was stolen. In spite of a total lack of supporting evidence, they repeat this lie. Trump's legal team brought 61 lawsuits alleging voter fraud and lost every one! His own Cyber Security Czar said the election was the cleanest in history. His own Attorney General (the same one who sat on and totally misrepresented the Mueller Report to the American people) called Trump's claims of election fraud "bullshit." Trump's personal lawyer lost his law license for abuse of the legal system. Fox News faces a billion-dollar defamation judgement against them for knowingly repeating the lie that Dominion voting machines created votes for Joe Biden. They could go after Gaetz and the others too, but sue a beggar and get a louse. Italian satellites did not switch any votes. Jewish space lasers did not destroy Trump votes. The ghost of Hugo Chavez did not intervene on behalf of Biden. What all the lies of Trump and his acolytes adds up to is a concerted effort to make Americans lose faith in one of the pillars of our democracy, the electoral process. Gaetz, Boebert, and Taylor-Green, along with Scott Perry, Mo Brooks, Andy Biggs, and other losers in and out of government, would trade American democracy for authoritarianism as long as they gain fame and power. Like I said, they're scum.

They probably include legislators, lawyers, judges, clerks, cops, clergy, journalists, and their readers. They may well number in the tens if thousands. It's a reasonable assumption.

@BDair In that clip, Dr. Faucci is talking about mask mandates as they relate to the delta variant. Presently, the delta variant is not considered a serious health threat in the USA. It's the omicron variant that we have to worry about. And guess what? Omicron viral loads in patients who are vaccinated are lower than they are in the unvaccinated. This is assuming there is a breakthrough infection, which is possible but not all that likely. In a straight up comparison of vaccinated people to unvaccinated people, vaccinated people are definitely less likely to transmit SARS CoV-2 to others.

@BDair You are dead wrong again, BDair! While people who are vaccinated can still be infected, their viral load is likely to be far lower than it would be without the shot(s). So their likelihood of infecting others is also lower. This is perfectly consistent with the fact that the vaccines drastically reduce the probability that the patient will develop severe disease, or even die frim COVID-19.

FYI, Congress includes the House of Representatives and the Senate. Raising the debt ceiling requires passage of a bill by Congress. Both the House and the Senate have to vote for passage by supermajority. For a bill to come up for a vote in the House, the Speaker has to give his/her ok. Under the new House rules, even if McCarthy says yes to a vote, it only takes one member to halt the process. There are a number of anarchists in the Republican caucus capable of this, who have indicated that they would. Clearly that would be on the Republicans. 👈

Flyingsaucesir replies on Jan 18, 2023:
@BDair Almost 300 million doses of the vaccine were administered during the 6-month study period. Presumably, it was one dose per person, so the number of people we're talking about is almost as big as the total population of the USA. Including all causes, around 8,000 Americans die EVERY DAY. In a typical 7-day period, around 56,000 Americans die of all causes. Again, there is no evidence that any of the 4500 deaths that followed a vaccine were caused by the vaccine. Example: it's nearly time for some old codger to die, but he doesn't know it. So he gets a vaccine, and within the week he kicks the bucket. Did the vaccine kill him? No. It was just his time to go. What IS clear is that the rate of death from COVID-19 among unvaccinated people is MUCH HIGHER than it is among people who have gotten their shots.

I understand hesitancy, no parent wants to hurt their kid, but we also have to protect the majority of folks and especially those who are medically fragile. It can be a tough call.
Flyingsaucesir replies on Jan 18, 2023:
Vaccine hesitancy is due mainly to the proliferation of disinformation. Unscrupulous, greedy individuals cast doubt on vaccine safety to spur sales of their own ineffective substitutes. Authoritarian, kleptocratic, rogue states (e.g. Russia, North Korea) seek to destabilize democratic opponents by sponsoring sophisticated disinformation mills. Domestic terrorists (e.g. white Christian nationalists) share conspiracy theories on social media in order to foment distrust in the government that they seek to overthrow. The volume of disinformation is great, and its damage should not be underestimated. However, notwithstanding the torrent of lies, a substantial majority of citizens have opted to be vaccinated. Since the mRNA vaccines against the SARS CoV-2 virus were rolled out in 2020, the vast majority of severe disease and death from COVID-19 have occurred among unvaccinated people. The incidence of severe adverse reaction from the vaccines has been vanishingly small.

@ChestRockfield Of course our electrical power generation will have to go entirely green if we are going to reach net zero CO2 emissions. If we don't do that, then all the cold washes and LEDs won't matter. But they will help make it possible to get by with less energy, which will probably be a necessity. We'll also have to learn how to make cement and fertilizer without burning fossil fuels. Progress is being made in all these areas.

@ChestRockfield My boat uses diesel fuel, and yes, it can go bad over time. Microbes actually feed on the fuel, and as they multiply they form a gunk that can clog your fuel lines and filters. That's why we add an anti-biologic. It's expensive stuff, but a little bit goes a long way. The stuff you put in your Cobra is probably designed to remove water from the system; not the same stuff.

@ChestRockfield Re soccer moms, I dated one who told me she put 100 miles on her SUV every day...ballet classes, soccer practice, baseball games, shopping, etc., etc. If I drive 150 miles in a week that's a lot. Anyway, not to digress, soccer mom behavior can change. I think of it like slack in the system: wasteful whims that can be whittled down. It's all about priorities. And I think that as climate change bites harder and harder, more and more people will make it a priority. And people who don't will become pariahs. Attitudes and behaviors will definitely change. And I'm not even going to speculate on whether the change will happen in time to save us from bad things, because it's too late for that. The cost of climate-related disasters in the US has already gone from $20 billion in the 1980s to over $150 billion today, on average. Some single years lately it's been over $350 billion. @ChestRockfield It's true that indoor air pollution is a concern. It's also a good way to convince people to get off gas. The issue is less abstract, easier to compass than climate change. Will doing away with gas water heaters and gas stoves solve the climate problem? Of course not. Are gas appliances a significant source of greenhouse gases? They are when we take into account the innumerable methane leaks that occur between the well head and the home. But we still have to close down all the coal-fired and gas-fired power plants, and replace the entire fossil fuel-driven transportation fleet with green-powered vehicles. It's an enormous task. I'm not saying that solving climate change should be left up to individuals. Far from it. This will take a collective effort, with government nudging citizens to make reasonable behavior changes while imposing increasingly strict regulations on corporations. None of this is optional. It must be done. I don't think the Dems look out of touch at all. The Dems were able to buck the historical midterm trend and keep the Senate while limiting the Republicans to a razor-thin House majority because a lot of people recognize Democrats' accomplishments if the last two years. There are lots of behavioral changes we can make as individuals. Like not drive 30 miles for that special burger. Like not spending a half hour in under the hot shower. Like ride a bicycle to the store, instead of driving a 3-ton SUV. Like turn the lights off when you leave the room. You get the idea. We should all remember that throughout the 20th century the United States was the number one emitter of greenhouse gases, producing, with only 5% of the world's human population, 25% of the emissions. We have developed a lot of very bad habits. We are a profligate, wasteful country on many levels. (Our emissions have only recently been surpassed by China.) We have a moral obligation to do all we can to be better. And as for soda straws and other plastic trash, we can certainly do better in that score as well. If restaurants will not take the initiative and use recyclable paper/cardboard takeout containers, then it should be mandated by law. Will there ever be an ideal time to discuss this in Congress? Probably not. PS: I was onto melting permafrost and its methane emissions before you got your first driver's license. 😂

@Spongebob You are certainly right to suspect the fossil fuel industry; distraction and misdirection, along with outright lying, are important parts of their playbook. But green hydrogen really does have great potential for storing energy. There are already solar energy arrays that can produce more electricity while the sun shines than they can sell. Electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen is a great way to store that excess energy. And large fuel cells that can run factories, ships, trucks, and trains are actually more efficient than the small ones in cars and pickups. 😎👍

There was no way Dems were going to be able to pass a law protecting the right to abortion in the last Congress; not without doing away with the filibuster first. And Manchin and Sinema weren't going to sign on to that. Just an unfortunate fact. In the meantime, blue states (and some red ones) are codifying the abortion rights in their constitutions. South Carolina's Supreme Court recently ruled that the privacy language in their constitution guarantees abortion rights to the women of that red state. Currently, bans on natural gas cook stoves are happening at the local level. The federal government is only offering subsidies to help that process along where it is popular. And with good reason. Climate change poses an existential threat to our national security in the short term, to our civilization in the medium term, and to our species in the long term. Seen in this light, it's a much bigger issue than abortion rights. I am not at all in favor of silencing people who want to talk about the urgent issues that confront us. Your impulse to censor is not at all helpful or welcome. But if you absolutely have to lose your shit, I'll send you a pack of Depends. 😂

@Spongebob The presenter spends a lot of of time comparing hydrogen to fossil fuels, or discussing generation of hydrogen using fossil fuels. But in the future all hydrogen will be produced with wind, photovoltaic, geothermal, tidal, wave, or nuclear fission or possibly even fusion energy. In any case, fossil fuels have no place in any future where we truly address climate change. So we can just ignore all discussion of fossil fuel use. The presenter also holds up the tiny fraction of hydrogen tech in our current energy system as somehow indicative of the future. She implies that hydrogen is not widely used now because it simply can't compete. But this is patently false. In fact, we would be much farther along in developing and implementing all green technologies, including hydrogen, were it not for the the extremely successful disinformation campaign waged by the fossil fuels industry over the last few decades. But that is about to change. The lady does bring up some important limitations to hydrogen, i.e. tank life and rarity of platinum and iridium. The pressure problem in itself is not a big deal; nor is the weight. If weight were really an issue, they wouldn't be using hydrogen fuel cells in space. Relatively rare iridium and platinum may be, but there is enough of these elements on Earth to make many millions of fuel cells. And we may someday find new deposits on Earth, the moon, or even on Mars. The water effluent freezing in cold climates should not pose an unsurmountable problem. We can always insulate the tailpipe, and direct a small fraction of the energy generated in the fuel cell to heating it if necessary. And remember, we are looking at a much warmer future world. Hell, just look at the European ski resorts with no snow this winter. The future is here. Finally, no single technology will fullfil all our energy needs. We will always be using a variety of green technologies, the specifics of which will be determined by local conditions and resources. Hydrogen is bound to be one of those. PS: I own no stock in any hydrogen fuel cell-related companies; I'm just an objective observer.

Well, you have a point there. The majority of people in countries where vaccines were/are available have looked at the statistics and wisely opted to be vaccinated. So on that point, maybe NdGT needs to clarify his thinking. He's not wrong if his comment is taken broadly to include climate change. On that issue, humans are proving to be woefully bad at thinking statistically. The stats all show that climate change is real, is anthropomorphic, and is a threat to human civilization and probably to the survival of our species as well as that of millions of others. Yet we are doing very little to address the problem. Many humans have allowed themselves to be bamboozled by the disinformation put out by the fossil fuel industry, casting doubt on solid science in order to keep their profits up. Unbeknownst to me, this 40-litre Florence flask had sat unused in storage for years. It had been donated to the school by County Sheriff, who had confiscated it from an illegal drug lab. The Science Dept. Chair was going to throw it in the trash. I rescued it, made a base for it, and used it as a classroom fish tank. 🙂
