How many of you pronounce the "t" in often?
Flyingsaucesir comments on Jul 12, 2018:
I pronounce the "t" in "often." I also say "fewer" when referring to a smaller number of things, and "less" in reference to a smaller amount of something. I pronounce nuclear NEW-CLEE-ARE, unlike Bush II, whose wont it was to say NOOK-YOU-LAR, which is fine if you are only 5 years old or an adult hillbilly, but totally unacceptable if you are POTUS. I found it extremely funny that many of 43's Republican compatriots took to mispronouncing "nuclear" on purpose, apparently to normalize what was obviously wrong simply to show political solidarity. I see the same kind of thing happening today. Republicans normalizing and/or approving of 45's wacko behavior, aiding and abetting the covering up of his criminal acts, merely for political expediency. Unfortunately, mispronunciations and bad grammar are the least of our worries right now.

Opinion The White House Is Tearing Down the Wall Between Church and State
Flyingsaucesir comments on Jul 11, 2018:
The "conservative" ideologues have a knack for twisting things around to suit their own ends. They turned the estate tax, meant to prevent massive dynastic wealth concentration among a select few into the "death tax." In order to allow big business to better manipulate the political system they developed the idea that "corporations are people." Healthcare professionals that might allow a terminal patient in agony to end their suffering became "death panels." When their "guns don't kill people; people kill people" looked like it was getting a little threadbare they came up with "The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun..." You know the rest. Individually each little sound bite is a pin-prick to the body politic. All together they are bleeding the country white. It is death by a thousand cuts.

I prefer to remain optimistic. I think our allies understand that Trump is an anomaly, that his election was fraudulent, that a substantial majority of Americans detest the man and his policies, and that we are working to get our house in order. Of course much rides on the November 2018 elections. A Republican ouster would be a resounding message of solidarity with and good will toward our friends in Great Britain, France, Germany, and other NATO allies.
Whose side is Trump’s America on?
Flyingsaucesir comments on Jul 9, 2018:
Trump is definitely Putin's lackey. That the POTUS is selling us down the river is obvious. The question is, why?!! It's hard for many to fathom. But if you look at Trump's history (and stay focussed and refuse to be distracted by his outrageous antics) we can see a clear progression: he was a lousy businessman who always borrowed as much money as possible to fund dubious enterprises, and then went bankrupt and left his creditors and contractors holding the bag. He did this so many times that legitimate financial institutions eventually refused to loan him money. So then he turned to illegitimate sources. Specifically, money laundering for the Russian oligarchy. Yes, the Russians have something on him, and it's a whole lot more embarrassing than hookers and golden showers.
"The American people are a welcoming and generous people.
Flyingsaucesir comments on Jul 9, 2018:
Actually there was discussion and debate in liberal media about the robust immigration enforcement that went on under Obama. To toss off the assertion that it didn't happen is suspiciously trollish, but I'm willing to accept that the speaker simply has a short memory or was not paying attention. It is also worth noting that there have been significant modifications in immigration enforcement policy made under the current Administration. Debate and concern have ratcheted up under Trump/Sessions because the current policy and tactics are more draconian, less humane, and accompanied by official rhetoric that is overtly racist and patently false (e.g. intimating that all or most Mexicans or Central Americans who cross our southern border illegally are gangsters or rapists or murderers, as the POTUS does with such frequency). Instead of sowing division by setting up liberals as a straw man to attack, Mr. Gator, why don't you focus your energies on actually solving the problem of illegal immigration? This partisan trolling is getting us nowhere.

16:8 diet: Fasting for 16 hours a day the key to weight loss, experts say
Flyingsaucesir comments on Jul 8, 2018:
I fast often, usually from like 9:00 pm 'till 12:45 pm the next day, which is almost 16 hours. That's when I'm working. I will go longer when I'm on vacation. Yesterday I had a burger and onion rings and a large chocolate shake at 12:30 pm, right before I went sailing. At about 6:00 pm, we were back at the dock and I had some about 20 Rainier cherries. I came home and went for a night bike ride from 8 to 10 pm. Watched a DVD and went to bed without any supper. It's 10 am now and I will probably start grazing on some mango or papaya pretty soon. So since the cherries it's been 16 hours. Since the burger, 22 hours. But who's counting? Right now I weigh about 180 lbs, and I'm as fat and out of shape as I have ever been. That's because lately I have been bad, stuffing my face and not getting enough exercise. I think the Trump era is bad for my health. I constantly crave comfort food. I need to find another outlet for my angst. Like target practice on pictures of his majesty's orange fucking face. ?

It is true that the.evangelicals are bent on a defacto if not actual repeal of the First Amendment separation clause. However, I do not think the next appointment to the Supreme Court will represent that big a change. Kennedy was somewhat liberal on social issues but he sided with the corporate right on the Citizens United decision. That set up what may turn out to be a democracy-busting structure, where the fix is in and big money decides the outcomes of elections. And who has the money these days? It's an international oligarchy with big fish like Vladimir Putin, Carlos Slim, and small fry like Sheldon Adelson and Steve Wynn, and wannabes like Donald Trump. None of these guys really gives a s**t about embryos or women's rights. They just want to exercise power and have their egos stroked. They are robber barons, and they want us to be their serfs. The evangelicals think they are using the Trump to further their agenda, but they are just dupes. That does not mean that parts of the evangelical agenda will not go forward. But if they get what they want they will also pay a price. They will be a more impoverished, disease-ridden, and poorly educated underclass.

Flyingsaucesir comments on Jun 22, 2018:
Sharks: an ancient lineage of cartilaginous fish (their only bones are in their in jaws); today there are about 750 species in the class, which also includes skates and rays; some lay an egg called a mermaid's purse, others bear live young; all have a cloaca; all have sensors in their skin that can detect the electric fields generated by muscle contractions in other fish; apex predator; first evolved about 450 million year ago; biggest ever was Carcarodon megalodon (up to 60 feet long), which went extinct around 18 (?) million years ago (its closest living relative is the great white shark). Sharks are horribly over-fished for sharkfin soup and cartilage supplement pills (criminally wasteful). If they are wiped out, the whole marine trophic structure will become unbalanced and marine biodiversity will crash. 30% of all protein consumed by humans comes from the sea. Do the math.

How conscious are you of your carbon foot print?
Flyingsaucesir comments on Jun 18, 2018:
What I do to reduce my carbon footprint: I compost all food scraps. I recycle all paper that is not soiled. I also recycle plastics and metals. I ride a bicycle to work, the grocery store, the bank, the post office, etc. I do have a car. It gets around 40+ mpg. I try not to drive much. In nearly 5 years I have put only 28k miles on the car. My house is lighted with LEDs. I'm fortunate to live in an area with very mild weather year-round, so I don't have to use air conditioning or heating. If this changes due to global warming then I will get solar panels to power the air conditioning. If I do occasionally need some heat I burn wood in the fireplace.

Flyingsaucesir comments on Jun 15, 2018:
We have an ancestor in common with apes. Our species is an offshoot. When the tree of life sprouts a new branch, the other branches do not necessarily die out.
So much for separation of church and state.

The Science Dept. Chair was going to throw it in the trash. I rescued it, made a base for it, and used it as a classroom fish tank. 🙂
