It is probable that a philosopher/teacher named Jesus did indeed live in Galilee 2,000 years ago. There are contemporaneous Roman writings indicating this is so. This is not a big deal. It is silly to get hung up on that point.

When the Democraps are in control they gerrymander districts to their favor so why blame the republicans who do it when they’re in charge. Because of the democraps crazy agenda we’re already well on our way to becoming a banana republic.
Flyingsaucesir replies on Oct 3, 2022:
@Trajan61 The photo ID Republican talking point is a red herring, for many reasons. 1. Election fraud was practically nil in the last election and in previous elections. 2. Photo ID is not going to stop somebody from filling out their dead parent's ballot. There were numerous instances of this on both sides, mostly by white Republican men. 3. Democrats are not opposed to requiring photo ID, just don't limit it to only one type that is difficult for a lot of poor or elderly or student citizens to obtain. Which is exactly what Republicans want to do, because the whole point is to disenfranchise would-be Democratic voters.

Should someone who immigrated to the USA (or their offspring) in the past 50 years pay the same amount as someone descended from the first white settlers? I don't see any way to unravel all the knots. Hell, we can't even give cash to struggling people and businesses in a pandemic without getting taken to the cleaners by fraudsters and scam artists.

And what form should these reparations take? Cash payments to individuals would probably not work out equitably. What about people of mixed race? What about Native Americans descended from tribes that collaborated with whites? What about Black folks descended from free Black folks (e.g. Queen Latifa)? Reparations should probably be designed to lift up entire communities, and in so doing, bring along the whole country as well. So rather than individual cash payments, make investments in infrastructure, in environmental cleanup and protection, education, job training, healthcare, etc.

My motivations for posting this were as follow: Originally the core of it was a reply to a tag to a comment in another post. After I composed it (which took time and effort) I thought it would make a good post in itself. It's a lot of information that we don't see all together in one place every day. And this is not even a comprehensive list. I would like to see what others may add to it. And I would be delighted if they would in turn use it in arguments with Trump supporters among their own family and friends. (Trump and many of his supporters - including my interlocutor in the other post - are making threats ranging from rioting to civil war if Trump is prosecuted. I would much rather put in the time and effort to reason with them than to shoot them.) Finally, I wanted the person who accused me of being a moron for supporting Biden to see how that would boomerang; how his wild accusation would result in the wider circulation of a devastating argument against Trump and for Biden.

You have not seen hydrogen produced at large scale yet because the necessary investment has not yet been made. Never fear, it will happen. People are starting to wake up to the fact that global warming is costing us more every year (it's something like 100 billion dollars per anum now). Fossil fuels are a dead end, literally. Biden's latest bill is a step in the right direction, but it's so new that there has not been time to implement it. And it is just a first step. Much more will have to be done. We really need to a approach climate change on a war footing. If we were smart we would have started 20 years ago. If the SCOTUS had not robbed Al Gore of the presidency, things might be a little different. But instead we got an oil man in the White House and a totally unnecessary, distracting, and destabilizing war in Iraq. But that just delayed the inevitable. Global warming is the greatest threat to our national security that we will ever face. It doesn't matter how many missiles you have if you can't grow food.

@David1955 You're right, it doesn't have to be proven. We can take note of the vanishingly small probability of God's existence and then make the logical choice to live our lives accordingly, i.e. as functional atheists. In other words, take Pascal's wager, live free from religion, and be sufficiently confident that the only Heaven or Hell we will ever experience are right here on Earth.

The crazy democraps policy on shutting down fossil fuel and nuclear power plants and switching over to unreliable solar and wind power is what’s causing the blackouts.
Flyingsaucesir replies on Sep 18, 2022:
Uh, no. Actually we produce more power than ever, but there are also more people needing air conditioning than ever. On average, the Earth receives about one kilowatt of solar energy per square meter per day. It's about 150 trillion kilowatts, a vast amount of energy. (It's 10,000 times the current total human energy usage.) We only need to harness a tiny fraction of that to fullfil all our energy needs. The way to deal with the daily fluctuation is to use excess electrical power during daylight hours to crack water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. Store the hydrogen in tanks. At night, reverse the process by running the hydrogen through fuel cells, generating electricity and water. You can also run ships, trains, trucks, planes, and cars on hydrogen. This is the future.

@WilliamCharles I'm sure there is some truth in that. But it's also true that two young reporters (Woodward & Burnstein) at the Washington Post broke the story (Watergate) that brought down a President (Nixon); that many newspapers published the Pentagon Papers purloined by Daniel Ellsberg, which helped bring an end to the disastrous Viet Nam war; that CNN and MSNBC and PBS and many others have been calling out Trump's lies and crimes for years, and the J6 Select Committee has provided sweeping evidence of treason and other crimes perpetrated by the ex-president. I think misinformation and disinformation are MUCH greater threats than censorship is.

@WilliamCharles Question: was it the monarchy or parliament who banned the song at the BBC in 1977? Or was it some programming executive at the BBC? Either way, the banning probably did more for Sex Pistols record sales than their actual music. But I agree, banning music, movies, or books is generally a bad idea. One more thing: it was truly heartwarming to hear how the former Johnny Rotten honored the Queen at her passing. I believe he was even heard joining in a chorus of God Save The King. 😂

@BDair The reason we can open up now is because so many people have achieved a level of immunity, whether through exposure to the virus or through vaccination. Before we had the vaccines and the therapeutics, it was necessary to go through all that masking and social distancing. Those actions kept the death rate down, kept the hospitals from being completely overwhelmed. Even so, it was rough ride. A lot of people died. But many more would have died.
