I think his actions are protected by the 1st Amendment right of free speech. Where I draw the line is at including the words "under god" in the Pledge of Allegiance, which K-12 students are encouraged to repeat every school day for 13 years.

First of all, Biden did not cause this inflation. It is due to fiscal policy going back decades. Trump's big tax giveaway to the rich did way more to blow up the deficit than Biden ever did. And then there was the Iraq War, totally unnecessary, costing trillions, started as a matter of choice, on false pretenses, by another Republican president. Second, I happen to agree with Biden's policies. Climate change is an existential threat not only to our country, but to all human civilization. Gas prices have been subsidized for way too long. Let fossil fuels compete on a level playing field with green energy, and we will see a cleaner, safer, more productive, more prosperous future. On the contrary; he is recognizing that patriotism is such a laudable emotional state, so venerable in the minds of the people, that a scoundrel who can convince the public that his words or acts are rooted in patriotism can essentially get away with anything. Johnson could have chosen other words, such as "nationalism," or "racism" or "imperialism" in place of patriotism, but he didn't. Maybe it's because, within the borders of a given country, especially one as diverse as the USA, patriotism is as close to universally admired as anything can be. More than nationalism (which usually excludes certain minorities), or racism (which is all about exclusion), or imperialism (which is an aggressive policy that may or may not be popular at home). In fact, there are more phenotypic differences among the individuals within a so-called racial group than there are between supposed "different" groups. It's important to get that straight at the outset of any discussion on race. Why? Because it obviates any temptation to ascribe different sociological or cultural differences to genetic differences. There simply are not enough genetic differences between, say, blacks and whites to explain the huge disparity in incomes, personal wealth, general health, representation in positions of power, etc., etc. So how do we explain these differences, if not by referring to genetics? Well, that's complicated, but any honest attempt to understand how we got here must certainly include a frank acknowledgement of trauma and systematic withholding of opportunity. Slavery was traumatic for the enslaved. The campaign of terror waged by the KKK on black people for generations was traumatic. Hmmm... I understand your caution, but I'm inclined to allow the word "truth" to be used in describing what science uncovers, or the models it develops (at least in certain contexts). Let me explain. Take, for instance, the theory of plate tectonics (a model), which explains why the continents look like they once fit together, why there are volcanic mid-ocean ridges running all over the world like the stitching on a baseball, why the Pacific Ocean is ringed with volcanoes, why fossil mollusks are found near the top of Mt. Everest, and many more interesting facts. The theory explains that all these facts thusly: the Earth's crust is composed of relatively rigid plates that ride around on convection currents in the mantle, sometimes colliding and sometimes pulling apart, sometimes subducting. Now compare that scientific explanation with a religious one (there are many, but we'll use just one for now) that it replaced, which said that volcanoes and earthquakes are the result of the god Vulcan working at his forge in the underworld. The contrast between the two explanations is stark. And one of them is true, while the other is definitely false. The theory of plate tectonics is rock solid and, while it is constantly being updated around the edges, it's basic premises are not going to change. It represents the truth about the origin of earthquakes, volcanoes, mid-ocean ridges, etc., at least when compared to any of the religious tales that preceded it. We can say the same thing about Darwin's theory of evolution, which has withstood all challenges for 150 years and can be described as truth when compared to the false explanation for the origin of species given in the Bible. So yes, I'm going to allow the word "truth" to be used to describe science, at least in some cases.

I'm not so impressed with today's press, either. Nobody is acting very honorably in this age of violence, manipulation, and avarice so their failures are not overly surprising for me. I mentally discard about half, maybe more, of what talking heads say, predict, or warn about and get a few versions ...

I think most news outlets are doing a good job. The really egregious offenders, like Fox News, News Max, One America News, and Breitbart, are few. Unfortunately, these few do tremendous damage.
