Flyingsaucesir replies on Jan 7, 2020:
@SeaGreenEyez Leave it to a Mormon bishop to claim that the question of the origin of species cannot be definitively answered! He is dead wrong! We know with certainty how new species come into being. The process is called Darwinian evolution. There are still some open questions about the details of the very first living cells, but no one in biology thinks it was in any way magical or divinely inspired. There is plenty of evidence that simple inorganic compounds can give rise to complex organic compounds, including amino acids, polypeptides, and RNA nucleotides. That's basically what you need to get life started. The reason we don't see abiogenesis occurring today is that the world is already full of hungry living things, which eat up any organics that might be lying around. Darwinian evolution is universally accepted among biologists. The good bishop is a physicist, not a biologist, so that may explain the gap in his understanding. Or he may just want to avoid the topic altogether because he does not want to deal with the controversy. He would not be the first teacher to take the easy way out.

@LimitedLight Ptolemy was just working off Aristotle's model. The Catholic church had interpreted it to signify confirmation that man (not woman!) was God's favorite creature. Ptolemy performed what could be called scientific contortionism, twisting Aristotle's model to fit observation. But it did not work. Copernicus was not convinced. Nor were Galileo or keppler. Ptolemy tried to draw inside the lines of religious dogma, and earned himself a footnote in the history books.

I appreciate your thoughtful comments! I suppose the main impetus for mentioning creationism in a science class is that it purports to explain an aspect of nature, and in so doing encroaches on the territory of science. And the religionists vigorously promote their half-baked ideas ad nauseum. The teacher has a choice: ignore this encroachment, or face it down. It is really not possible to fully ignore it. Students will invariably bring it up. What then? Ignore those questions and comments? It would look rather like you were running away from something.

There is no thing in the world that can be described or explained without reference to other things. People are allowed to say whatever they want within broad limits. And they are allowed to decide for themselves what they accept or reject. It's a messy system, and we have not yet learned how to deal with this new phenomenon called social media. But we are learning. Are we learning fast enough to avoid a takeover by criminals? It is obvious that Putin's shenanigans, meddling in other countries politics, etc., has paid off spectacularly in terms of sowing division and discord among his opponents. With an American President bending over backwards for him, Putin has never had a stronger hand since his illegal annexation of Crimea and Invasion of eastern Ukraine. He has managed to get a few Republicans in Congress to repeat (with straight faces!) the fiction that it was Ukraine who hacked the 2016 election. It's quite an accomplishment! Of course, the sanctions are still biting. The Russian people have had a tough time. They are getting impatient with the Putin's kleptocracy. I'm sure Vlad is a bit nervous. It was never going to be a simple thing to get the sanctions lifted But Putin is crafty and patient and implacable. He is playing the long game, and doing it masterfully. I have to give him that. It would be a grave mistake to ever underestimate him. Actually I'm not surprised to hear from you, now that the 2020 election is just around the corner. Remember, Donald J. Trump is essentially a coward and a dolt. It is possible that the truth will become apparent to a critical mass and we will oust this pack of miserable, mangy curs from power. Half the country already sees that this emperor has no clothes. Alas, a lie that many believe to be the truth. This, to me, is most unsettling. For in a world where lies are truth, anything goes. If not somehow checked, over-ridden, or outnumbered, the acceptance of lies for truth is the end of democracy. So the question then is, how do we change minds in a media environment that includes (allows) Fox News, Infowars, a plethora of fake news websites (some Russian state-sponsored), and a Facebook that refuses to take responsibility for the content it publishes? Who can act as an arbiter that all sides will trust? Or do we have to devolve into civil war? I have always known that it was theoretically possible for a Nazi-style rise of fascism to take shape in this country, but I never thought it would actually happen. I thought we were too wise, too sophisticated, too modern for that. And yet here we are. Jack-booted thugs are on the march. And a bold liar occupies the Oval Office. His impeachment, however damning the evidence, is unlikely to result in his removal. Not where supine senators are in the majority. How do we cut this Gordian knot? Who will be that little kid whose voice everyone will miraculously hear when he cries, "The Emperor has no clothes!"?

That's why I view Trump's office as illegitimate. I would think it is grounds for a do-over on Brexit too. You are right: it is a very complicated issue. People should be very well informed before being asked to decide. In the US, we always have another election coming up. On Brexit, it's a one-time thing, and really too important to get wrong. Flyingsaucesir replies on Apr 8, 2019:
@LloydBrumbaugh While many of the details of life's origins remain shrouded in mystery, science has managed to uncover enough facts to provide a very compelling sketch of how life probably evolved on Earth. These include (but are not limited to) the spontaneous assembly of nucleotides (the building blocks of DNA and RNA) and amino acids (the building blocks of proteins) from very simple organic molecules that were present on early Earth. Prototypes for cells likewise are known to spontaneously form in certain environments. It is very probable that even in the earliest stages of their formation, even before they fit our present definition of "living," cells were undergoing a process of natural selection. There is no reason to discount that possibility. Indeed, we see selective processes at work in all kinds of systems. Below the level of organisms.

@Piratefish Fact: Trump has gone out of his way to erase every trace of his predecessor. Fact: Trump IS a racist (witness his redlining black folks out of his properties, his statements supporting white supremacists ["some very fine people"], his denigration of "shit-hole" African countries). It is also true that he his pandering to his base, and it's also true that at least some in that base are white supremacists. It's also true that "the base" has swallowed, hook, line, and sinker, the neoliberal ideology that free markets can solve all problems and all government regulations are bad. This poppycock has been promulgated largely by think tanks and politicians funded by corporate interests. The corporations are the tail wagging this dog, and they are concerned with profit, not race. So no, race is not the prime mover; corporate money is. Race is a distraction; a red herring, if you will. But it is also a very real element in the mentality of Trump and his base.

Unbeknownst to me, this 40-litre Florence flask had sat unused in storage for years. It had been donated to the school by County Sheriff, who had confiscated it from an illegal drug lab. The Science Dept. Chair was going to throw it in the trash. I rescued it, made a base for it, and used it as a classroom fish tank. 🙂
